1. FG may shift census, plans movement restriction

Less than a week to the commencement of the national population and housing census, there are rising indications that it may be shifted due to funding and other logistic barriers.

However, the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Isa-Kwarra, has disclosed that the commission will meet with the Federal Government on Friday to validate the date for the national population and housing census.

He said, “The census date is fixed for May 3. We are meeting with the government finally to validate that date tomorrow (Friday), and hopefully, we will be able to let the world know if that May 3 stands or should be shifted.”

2. Tinubu receives Wike, Makinde two months after election victory

Governor Nyesom Wike of River State and his counterpart in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, paid a courtesy visit to the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the Defence House on Friday evening.

The development is coming two months after the former Lagos State governor was declared winner of the contentious 2023 presidential election.

Tinubu had polled 8,794,726 votes to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and the Labour Party flag bearer, who got 6,984,520 and 6,101,533 votes respectively.

3. Do away with negative notions about Abia- Ikpeazu charges corps members

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, has charged the new corps members posted to the state to do away with all the negative ideas they have about the state and be open minded about serving in the state for the next one year.

Ikpeazu handed down the advice on Friday on the occasion of the swearing – in ceremony of the Batch “A”, Stream II corps members comprising 578 males and 584 females at the Abia State NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umunna, in Bende Local Government Area.

Ikpeazu, represented by the state Commissioner Ministry of Youth Development, and chairman, NYSC State Governing Board, Charles Esonu, advised the new corps members “to do away with all those preconceived negative and bad notions you have about Abia state and its people before now and have a healthy attitude to work and play and let your heart be open to positive changes and innovations, use this one in a lifetime opportunity and the period of your service year to make friends across geo-political zones for your future, Nigeria needs people like you to show that togetherness and oneness is a virtue.”

4. Nigeria playing stabilising role in Africa – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, said Nigeria’s size and resources have imposed on her a stabilizing role in the West African subregion and the African continent as a whole.

Speaking after receiving a message from President Ibrahim Ghali of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, SADR from a Special Envoy at the State House Friday, President Buhari said peace and stability are central to the vision of Nigeria in Africa, adding that these were essential to security and prosperity in the continent.

He thanked the President of the Sahrawi Republic for the message he sent and gave an assurance that he will study its content and brief the in-coming President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on their concerns, urging the Special Envoy to make the effort to brief the in-coming President as well.

5. UK to end Sudan evacuation flights on Saturday

The UK said Friday it will end evacuation flights from Sudan for its citizens and their relatives on Saturday, after airlifting over 1,500 people out of the conflict-hit country so far this week.

The flights from the Wadi Saeedna airfield near the Sudanese capital Khartoum, which Britain began on Tuesday, will cease at 1700 GMT on Saturday, deputy prime minister Oliver Dowden told UK media.

In a separate statement, the Foreign Office said British nationals and their eligible immediate family wanting to leave should arrive at the airfield by 1000 GMT Saturday for processing.

6. Italian cyclist dropped from team for killing cat

The promising Italian cyclist who shot dead a cat from his bedroom window has been dropped by his Trek-Segafredo team.

Former world under-19 champion Antonio Tiberi said in February he was trying out an air rifle when he shot dead a cat belonging to former head of state in San Marino, Federico Pedini Amati.

Tiberi was fined 4,000 euros and handed a 20-day suspension from Trek-Segafredo.

But the team said Friday that they were disappointed with Tiberi during the suspension period.
