Top 10 Newspaper Headlines Saturday, August 13th 2022

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. Pope comment: Lalong apologises to Catholic bishops

The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, on Friday, tendered his apology to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, following the alleged ‘blasphemous’ comments about the Holy Father, Pope Francis.

While admitting that it was an error on his part to have linked the Catholic Pontiff with Nigeria’s politics, he begged for forgiveness and understanding from the Catholic Church through the Bishops’ conference.

Earlier, the concerned members of the church had frowned at his choice of words, even as a Papal Knight of St. Gregory, and they demanded his immediate suspension from the church.

However, in a letter to the CBCN President, entitled, ‘Letter of Apology,’ which was dated August 12, 2022, Governor Lalong restated his commitment to the Catholic faith and promised to continue upholding the banner of the Christian faith in public life.

The letter read, “I have followed with some shock and deep regret, the reactions that have trailed my appointment as the Director-General of the Campaign Council for the presidential candidate of our party, the APC, Ahmed Tinubu, and his running mate, Ibrahim Shettima.

“The appointment, understandably was received with mixed reactions across the Christian community, who genuinely feel aggrieved by the decision of our party to settle for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

2. Monkeypox: Experts give virus variants new names

A group of global experts convened by WHO has agreed on new names for monkeypox virus variants, as part of ongoing efforts to align the names of the monkeypox disease, virus and variants—or clades—with current best practices.

The experts agreed to name the clades using Roman numerals.

Assigning new names to existing diseases is the responsibility of WHO under the International Classification of Diseases and the WHO Family of International Health Related Classifications.

The monkeypox virus was named upon first discovery in 1958, before current best practices in naming diseases and viruses were adopted. Similarly for the name of the disease it causes. Major variants were identified by the geographic regions where they were known to circulate.

Current best practice is that newly-identified viruses, related disease, and virus variants should be given names with the aim to avoid causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional, or ethnic groups and minimise any negative impact on trade, travel, tourism or animal welfare.

The WHO, in a statement made available to our correspondent, said it is holding an open consultation for a new disease name for monkeypox and anyone wishing to propose new names can do so here.

“The naming of virus species is the responsibility of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses, which has a process underway for the name of the monkeypox virus.

3. Oshoala nominated for 2022 Ballon d’Or

Super Falcons forward player, Asisat Oshoala has been nominated for the 2022 Women’s Ballon d’Or player of the year award on Friday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

In July, Oshoala was awarded the African Women’s Player of the Year for the fifth time, breaking her own achievement and becoming the first person to win the CAF award five times.

Her remarkable form which saw her produce 20 goals in 19 appearances saw her become the first African player to win the Pichichi ward in Spain despite being injured for a large part of the season (three months).

She sustained an injury during Nigeria’s opening game against South Africa at the 2022 WAFCON and Super Falcons ended the competition in fourth place.

President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, appealed on Friday while speaking at a Special Convocation ceremony organised to confer Honorary Doctorate Degree on a business mogul Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi by the University of Maiduguri.

” I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the ASUU to reconsider its stance to call off their 7 months old strike, as students and their parents are desirous to see that schools are reopened. The nation cannot afford long interruption of higher education of the youths and wouldn’t undermine the development of the nation’s human capital in a strictly competitive world,” the President stressed.

He further pointed out that the  appeal was made in view of students desire to return to the classrooms with their parents seeking for reopening of the shut down Universities.

6. Atiku pledges to work with stakeholders to end ASUU strike

The Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to work with government and lecturers to end incessant strike in Nigeria universities.

Abubakar stated this at a youths programme with the theme “Intergenerational Synergy on Government”, organised by PDP to commemorate the 2022 International Youth Day celebration in Abuja on Friday.

Abubakar, who narrated how his father was arrested for never wanting him to go to school, described education as fundamental right of any citizen, especially the children and youths.

He decried the inability of the government to resolve lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), saying such would not happen under a PDP or his led administration when elected as president.
