1. ‘Agba Jalingo detained, to be moved to Abuja’

Cross River activist and journalist, Agba Jalingo, who earlier announced in the afternoon that his Lagos residence was under siege by policemen, has been reportedly detained at Alapere Police Station, Lagos.

The wife of the activist, Violet Agba, confirmed this to our correspondent, Friday evening.

She noted that the police had planned to transfer the activist to Abuja tomorrow morning.

“They took him to the police station, he will be moved to Abuja tomorrow morning,” she told The PUNCH.

She claimed that Jalingo was being arrested for alleged defamation of character of the wife of Frank Ayade, the brother of the Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade.

“We asked them for an arrest warrant or charge sheet, but they didn’t present it to us. They only told us that he’s been invited for defamation of character of Frank Ayade’s wife, Violet said.

2. FG promised N60,000 increment in professor’s salaries – ASUU

Fresh facts have emerged on why the Academic Staff Union of Universities rejected the proposal by the Federal Government.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that ASUU had tagged the offer by the Federal Government as “miserable”. However, the union did not go into some of the details in the proposal.

But the zonal coordinator, Port Harcourt zone, Stanley Ogoun, in a statement made available to The PUNCH noted that the Federal Government noted that it would increase the salaries of professors by N60,000 while other lecturers would have their salaries increased within the range of N30,000 and N60,000.

Ogoun also noted that the government promised to release the revitalisation fund of N170 billion which would be included in the 2023 budget.

“Nigerians should be aware of offers the so-called minister came up with. These are: (a) 170 billion naira for revitalisation in the 2023 budget; (b) a promise to increase by N60,000 the salary of a professor at the bar in next year’s budget; (c) no statement on the amendment of the National University Commission Act gathering dust at the National Assembly (d) payment of two tranches of outstanding Earned Academic Allowance in next year’s budget; (d) a promise to adopt the University Transparency and Accountability Solution; and (e) another promise to release the white papers.”

3. Kidnapped Nasarawa commissioner regains freedom

The abducted Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Yakubu Lawal, has regained freedom after five days in captivity.

Lawal was kidnapped by gunmen who stormed his residence on Monday night and whisked him away to an unknown destination.

The incident occurred in the Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of the state. There were sporadic gunshots before the commissioner was abducted.

Speaking with our correspondent in Lafia on Friday, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, said the commissioner was released due to sustained pressure from officers of the command on the gunmen.

He said, “The abducted Commissioner has been released around 6pm today and he has been reunited with his family.

4. Buhari approves redeployment of 9 Perm Secs

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the deployment and re-deployment of nine Permanent Secretaries in the Federal Civil Service.

Mr Mohammed Ahmed, Deputy Director Communications, office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF), made this known in a circular issued on Friday in Abuja.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo shared one of the jokes he made with the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, when he visited him in his Abeokuta residence on Wednesday

6. Drug abuse, major cause of mental problems — Ehanire

The Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has attributed drug abuse to most cases of mental problems among young people.

This is even as he said the future of Nigeria depends on the younger generation, hence, the need to rid them of harmful substances that could hinder them from achieving their goals and dreams.

He stated this in Port-Harcourt at a One Day seminar on Mental Health Intervention tagged: “Friends of the Brain Club,” organized by Emma Njoku Foundation.

A statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Abuja, said he (Ehanire) lauded efforts of the Foundation in routing the spectacular direction that harps on the nation’s well-being as drugs tend to destroy the younger generation.

7. Why FG cannot consider salary increase — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the Federal Government would not be able to increase salaries of civil servants for now.

He cited loss of revenue to crude oil theft and other global crises as factors that would make consideration of salary increase impossible for now.

Buhari spoke when the Central Working Committee of Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) paid him a courtesy visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He also noted that employment into the public service should reserved for the “best and brightest’’ of Nigerians, who will fuel policies with fresh ideas.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, the President also pointed out that his administration has invested the most into security, in order to create an enabling environment for development and protect Nigerians as well as the nation’s critical national assets like the those in oil and gas sector.

8. NAFDAC impounds truckloads of deadly, alcoholic bitters in Lagos, Zaria

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye has stated it has impounded truckloads of unregistered and deadly products, including intoxicants, alcoholic bitters and sex-enhancers.

Noting that the unwholesome products were laces with psychoactive substances like tobacco, marijuana, cannabis, etc, she stated that arrests have been made on the owners of the products and their factories shut down in Lagos and Zaria.

Further disclosing that the products have the capacity to destroy the function of the brain, kidney and liver as well as cause death, she stated that three suspects (although they have been granted bail) were arrested in connection with the production and sales of the deadly drinks, with their factories shut down.

9. Police advise Nigerians to fight insecurity with CCTV

The Nigeria Police Force has urged citizens to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) in their homes, offices and business premises to curb insecurity in the country.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Police Command, SP Chris Anyanwu gave the advice on Friday.

Anyanwu said the device had assisted the operations of the security agency in apprehending robbers and other criminals.

The spokesman said CCTV played a role in the arrest of a three-man syndicate who specialized in attacking shopping malls and supermarkets in Ebonyi.

The syndicate robbed POS operators and bank customers after they withdraw cash within Abakaliki, the capital.

10. Ogun disburses another N500m gratuities to pensioners

Ogun State Government has paid another N500m for the quarterly payment of gratuity to both State and Local Government pensioners, in fulfillment of its resolve to ensure a viable and pleasurable life for senior citizens

The Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Local Government Pensions, Mrs. Olubukola Adeniregun who made this known to newsmen in her office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, assured that the present administration would continue to make life more meaningful for the aged.

Adeniregun noted that the State government paid a sum of N500m for the first quarter of the year in April 2022 to the pensioners, lauding Prince Abiodun for the regular disbursement of gratuity and payment of monthly pensions.

She appreciated the pensioners for their patience, understanding, and support to the present administration.
