1. NBA swears in Maikyau as Akpata bows out

The new Nigerian Bar Association President, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, was on Friday, sworn in to take over the mantle of leadership from his predecessor, Mr Olumide Akpata.

Maikyau, who was sworn in as the 31st President of the NBA, won the election held earlier in July with 38,000 votes, following an election conducted by legal practitioners online.

He was sworn in at the close of activities for the 62nd Annual General Conference of the association.

At the swearing-in ceremony, which marks the end of activities for the 62nd Annual General Conference of the association, which was held at Eko Hotel & Suites, Maikyau was full of gratitude to God who brought him thus far.

The new President commended the outgone Akpata administration for the giant strides it recorded at the NBA in the last two years.

He made a commitment to not only sustain the laudable achievements and projects of the Akpata administration but also to build on it.

Maikyau also thanked his colleagues at YC Maikyau & Co., his campaign team, as well as friends and associates who supported his candidacy.

2. British Airways suspends ticket sales over trapped funds

The United Kingdom mega carrier, British Airways, has stopped travel agents in Nigeria from selling their tickets amid the difficulty of foreign airlines to repatriate over $464m ticket sales proceeds to their respective home countries.

This came as the Central Bank of Nigeria on Friday announced the release of $265m out of the N464m trapped funds to the foreign carriers.

A breakdown of the figure indicates that the sum of $230m was released as a special FX intervention while another sum of $35m was released through the Retail SMIS auction.

However, the BA in a notice to travel agents in Nigeria on Friday said the ticket distribution firms would no longer be able to make new bookings or service existing bookings made in Nigeria.

The UK airline did not specify the reason for the decision nor did it state how long the suspension of ticket sales by Nigerian travel agents would last.

BA however said it was committed to the Nigerian market and would not stop flights to the country.

3. Amusan finishes second in Lausanne Diamond League

World Record holder Tobi Amusan finished second in the 100m Hurdles at the Lausanne Diamond League in Switzerland.

Amusan ran 12.45secs to finish behind Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn as the Olympic champion ran a new Meet Record of 12.34secs. The United States’ Tia Jones finished third with a Personal Best of 12.47secs

4. COVID-19: Ongoing vaccination reason for Nigeria’s impressive decline in deaths ― FG

THE federal government has attributed what it referred to as ‘impressive decline in deaths arising from COVID-19 ‘ to the ongoing vaccination in the country.

The government, however,enjoined Nigerians against complacency, saying the dreaded virus was still very much in the country, saying it mutates, making it more dangerous and deadly.

Speaking Friday evening in Abuja, at the 2022 African Vaccination Week Award Ceremony, Secretary to the Government of the Federation,SGF,Boss Mustapha,who explained that the ceremony was meant to “recognize those who have made remarkable contributions towards immunization in Nigeria’”,lamented that:”Overcoming the misconceptions that follows vaccination has been indeed a real battle over the years.”

Mustapha said,”While it is safe to mention that the impressive decline in deaths arising from COVID-19 is as a result of the ongoing vaccination,we should not rest on our oars as the virus is still very much with us and as we know, it mutates, making it more dangerous and deadly.”

5. Residents ignore explosion threat, Police, scoop from fallen tanker in Ibadan

There was palpable fear, on Friday in Ibadan, Oyo State, as some residents and area boys within Idi-Ose community defied possible explosions and presence of police officers to scoop petroleum products at the scene of a fallen tanker.

The incident occurred at Distance Learning, Idi-Ose Bus Stop, on new Ibadan/Oyo expressway in Akinyele Local Government area of the state, as the tanker laden with 33,000 litres petrol tanker overturned and fell by the roadside.

Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that despite the presence of security operatives and the Fire Service officials, they ignored the advice to stop scooping the fuel until the arrival of the Western Nigeria Security Network, WNSN, codenamed Amotekun, who sent them away and took over the situation.

Speaking with Vanguard at the scene, the Coordinator of Amotekun in the local government area, Kamoru Azeez, said his team responded to the emergency call and restored sanity immediately after they arrived there.

6. Kubwa Building Collapse: Two dead as FCT concludes rescue operations

The Federal Capital Territory Administration FCTA has concluded rescue operations at the scene of a three-storey shopping mall which collapsed in the wee hours of Friday in Kubwa, the city’s largest suburban town.

Director General, FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss announced this in a terse statement Friday in Abuja.

According to the statement signed by FEMA’s Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, the remains of two persons who were earlier reported trapped in the rubble have been retrieved.

In a move to check a brewing crisis in the aviation sector, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released $265 million to airlines operating to settle outstanding ticket sales.

Confirming the release, in a statement, the Director, Corporate Communications Department at the CBN, Mr. Osita Nwanisobi said: “The Governor, Godwin Emefiele and his team were concerned about the development and what it portends for the sector and travelers as well as the country in the comity of nations”.

8. EKSU demands apology for ASUU President’s ‘reckless’ label

Ekiti State University Management has demanded an apology from Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke for describing the institution ‘quack’.

In an interview on Arise TV, Osodeke has categorised EKSU and other state universities who backed out from the ongoing industrial action as irrelevant and quack institutions.

EKSU termed Osodeke’s statement unacceptable, condemnable and should be retracted.

9. Tinubu will fix Nigeria like Lagos – Ex-Police IG Okiro

Former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has declared support for the presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu.

Okiro said the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate fixed Lagos and will do the same as Nigeria’s leader.

He made the comment in Abuja at the unveiling of the planning committee for a support group, ‘Defect Together Movement for Tinubu-Shettima 2023.’

The retired police chief on Friday described Tinubu as a man with foresight and capacity to fix Nigeria, adding that his developmental legacy was glaring.

Okiro recalled that when Tinubu became Lagos governor in 1999, criminality was at its highest peak.

10. Why Ayu must not resign – Atiku’s loyalist, Lee Meaba

A loyalist of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Lee Meaba, has insisted that the National Chairman of the PDP, Iyorchia Ayu must not resign.

The resignation of Ayu is one of the demands from the camp of Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike for a peaceful resolution of the crisis within the party.

Ayu was said to have “promised to resign” his position if the presidential candidate of the PDP emerges from the North.

But he has been quoted recently as saying he won’t to step down, insisting that he has “a four year mandate”.

Speaking on Arise TV on Friday, the former Rivers South East senator, Meaba said since the new chairman of the PDP can only emerge through a mini-convention, the party cannot afford to start organizing a convention six months to the general elections.
