Newspaper Headlines

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

PUNCH NEWSPAPER

1. Buhari consistent with anti-corruption fight — Don

A professor of Public Administration and Politics, Yaki Katuka, has said that President, Major General Muhammadu (retd.), has been consistent in his anti-corruption fight, both as a former military Head of State and as the democratically elected President of Nigeria.

The don said this during the launching of a book titled, ‘Inside Buhari’s War Room’, written by Philip Agbese, in Abuja on Thursday.

Katuka said, “President Buhari has remained consistent in his anti-corruption fight, both as a former military Head of State and as a democratically elected President of Nigeria.

“Another interesting part is that, sometimes, people mix these things. Persons such as Ibrahim Babangida, Sanni Abacha, Murtala Muhammed, were never presidents. They were heads of state, but Buhari was not only a military Head of State, he is now a president.”

Katuka further revealed that, as chairman, Northern Christian Professors, he was initially bothered about the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, adding that he was, however, relieved after Tinubu and his team later explained the reasons for such decision to him.

2. Why Buhari didn’t approve Fayose’s impeachment —Adesina

Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has revealed why the president did not approve the impeachment of the former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, from office when he had the power and opportunity.

Adesina made the revelation in an article he wrote to celebrate Buhari on his 80th birthday slated for December 17 (tomorrow).

The president’s special adviser said it is because Buhari has “no malicious bone in his body,” that was why he did not effect Fayose’s impeachment through the Ekiti State House of Assembly, which at the time was largely dominated by members of the All Progressives Congress.

In the article titled ‘Buhari at 80: No Malicious Bone In His Body’, Adesina recalled how Fayose had tackled Buhari in the build up to the 2014 elections and how he had said the president, if elected back then, would not survive his tenure in office.

3. Court voids murder, terrorism charges against CUPP spokesperson

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory on Friday voided the police investigation report and charges against the Spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, Ikenga Ugochinyere.

The court also awarded the sum of N5 million only as general and exemplary damages in his favour.

Delivering her judgment, Justice Binta Mohammed, held that the purpose of both the illegal police investigation report and the trumped up charges was to frame the applicant so as to breach his fundamental human rights.

The court consequently set aside the allegations of murder, arson, attacks on INEC offices, hacking of INEC data, robbery, breach of national security and terrorism, describing it as trumped-up criminal charges.

In a statement issued by the Assembly spokesperson, Hon Kunle Akande, he urged investors to remain calm over the matter, saying the true state of debt profile will be in the public after the interaction.

5. 2023: Hope is on the way, Okowa assures Nigerians

Vice-Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has urged Nigerians not to lose hope even in the midst of difficulties, assuring that the PDP would rebuild the country and restore hope to the people.

Okowa, who is Governor of Delta, made the call while signing the State’s 2023 Appropriation Bill at Government House, Asaba, on Friday.

He said that as citizens of the country had continued to struggle to eke out a living, it appeared that hope was waning, and urged them to look in the right direction to recreate the nation of their dreams.

The Military High Command gave the nod to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to independently investigate series of allegations levelled against the Armed Forces of Nigeria by an international news Agency, Reuters.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, who made the demand when he met the Executive Secretary of NHRC, Tony Ojukwu, at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, said the call for probe into the activities of troops in the frontline, has become imperative because the military has nothing to hide.

Reuters, in a recent report, alleged that the Nigerian military forcefully terminated the pregnancies of arrested and detained women linked to Boko Haram terrorists.

The agency also claimed that military authorities also extra-judicially killed children of terrorists for fear of them taking after their parents.

9. 2023: You will understand how strong APC is on election day – Gov. Badaru tells Jigawa opposition

The Jigawa State Governor, Muhammad Badaru Abubakar said the opposition parties would clearly understand the difference between people’s choice party and despised parties during the 2023 general election.

The governor stated this on Friday while addressing a mammoth crowd in Kaugama Local Government Area. He was reacting to the destruction of posters and billboards of the All Progressives Congress, APC, allegedly by opposition parties.

He said the ruling APC in the state has provided a free level ground for all the opposition political parties in the state.

According to him: “It is quite unfortunate, as the party in power, we didn’t abuse anybody, we didn’t destroy any party’s posters and billboard, still some opposition parties are destroying our own.

10. Transfer: He’s not going to accept it – Gary Neville warns Ronaldo’s next club

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, has said Cristiano Ronaldo will not accept limited playing time at his next club.

Ronaldo is currently a free agent after his contract with Manchester United was cancelled in November.

The 37-year-old has been heavily linked with Saudi Arabian outfit, Al-Nassr, who are offering him a mega deal to leave Europe.

Neville, however, believes the five-time Ballon d’Or winner is more interested in how much he features for the team.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt Cristiano needs, wants and has to play,” Neville told the Sky Sports World Cup Podcast.
