1. Lagos govt promises to resolve Apapa gridlock

The Lagos State Government on Friday reassured residents and motorists that it would continue engaging relevant stakeholders until traffic gridlocks being experienced around Apapa-Port axis was totally eradicated.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, disclosed this during an interactive meeting with relevant stakeholders including officials of Nigerian Port Authority on the permanent solutions to Apapa traffic gridlocks held at the Ministry of Transportation, Alausa, Ikeja.

This was contained in a statement signed by Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

According to the statement, Giwa disclosed that despite the success recorded in managing traffic around Apapa with the introduction of ‘Eto’ system to petroleum tankers, the State Government is still working tirelessly to resolve other challenges to enable seamless journey to motorists.

2. S’Court dethrones Obong of Calabar

The Supreme Court on Friday dethroned the Obong of Calabar, Etubom Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V, ending 15 years of a legal battle.

The deposed monarch had been at loggerheads with some members of the traditional council over his installation processes.

In the judgment written by Justice Amina Augie and read by Justice Akomaye Agim, the court upheld the judgment of the Appeal Court, Calabar, and ordered that a fresh election be conducted in accordance with the constitution of the Palace.

In Suit No. HC/102/2008 filed by his lead counsel, Mr. Joe Agi, SAN, former minister of finance under Late Gen. Sani Abacha, Etubom Anthony Ani, and others had sued Otu and others in their capacities as members of the Etuboms’ Traditional Council for jettisoning the screening process of the Western Calabar.

3. Ghana increases salaries by 30% amid economic woes

The Ghanaian government in conjunction with  trade unions have agreed to increase the salaries of all public servants by 30 per cent for 2023.

This was disclosed in a joint statement, according to Al Jazeera, as the country struggles to reduce debt and tackle rampant inflation.

The cedi dropped heavily against the US dollar last year as government spending cuts and central bank interest rate hikes failed to tame the spiraling inflation, which rose to a new high of 54 percent last month.

It was gathered that trade unions in the country, who represent public servants, started negotiating salary rises with the government in November, with the two parties settling on a 30 per cent increase across board on Thursday, effective from January 1, 2023.

4. 2023 Polls: You have no reason to fail Nigerians, Ooni tells INEC

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the successful conduct of the forthcoming general elections.

Ooni gave the charge while playing host to the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mutiu Agboke, in his Palace, on Friday, in Ile-Ife.

While reaffirming the traditional institution’s support for INEC, the Ooni stressed that the future of over 200 million Nigerians rests heavily on the outcome of the poll.

“I wish to laud this current administration for providing the needs of INEC and I also commend the INEC for the introduction of high-powered technology to our electoral lives.

5. NSCDC arrests 21 suspected human traffickers, 5 illegal migrants in Imo

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC),  Imo State Command, says it arrested 21 suspected human traffickers and five illegal migrants in 2022.

Commandant of the NSCDC in Imo, Mr Matthew Ovye, disclosed this while presenting his scorecard for year 2022 at an expanded management meeting held at the command’s headquarters in Owerri.

Ovye said that the suspected traffickers were handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)  for prosecution while the illegal migrants were also handed over to the authorities of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Imo.

He attributed the achievements to the doggedness and commitment of the command’s personnel and sued for its sustenance.

6. Tinubu presents economic plans to stakeholders at NESG Presidential Dialogue

Presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has assured of a private sector-driven economy if elected president.

Tinubu gave this assurance while presenting his comprehensive economic plan to stakeholders at a Presidential Dialogue organised by the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in Lagos on Friday.

The APC candidate stressed the need to end the fuel subsidy regime, insisting that it has overstayed.

He said, “My core belief is that the private sector must be the prime driver of economic progress. However, the government establishes the framework within which the private sector must operate.

7. Court dismisses PDP’s suit seeking to void Tinubu/Shettima ticket

AFederal High Court, Abuja has dismissed a suit by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) seeking the disqualification of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Kassim Shettima as the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next month’s election.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment on Friday, dismissed the suit on the grounds that the PDP lacked locus standi to have instituted the suit.

Justice Ekwo found that the suit was caught by the principle of issue estoppel, similar having been decided by the court, and held that amounted to an abuse of the process of the court.

The judgment was on the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1734/2022, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), APC, Tinubu and Shettima listed as defendants.

8. Two more abducted Edo train passengers rescued

Two more victims of the attack at Tom Ikimi/Ekehen train station at Igueben have been rescued, Edo Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare has announced.

He spoke at a news conference where he stated the rescue operation was carried out by a joint team of military personnel, policemen, local vigilance members and hunters.

Nekhihare said that nine persons were still in the custody of the kidnappers.

9. INEC chair Yakubu, Peter Obi, Kwankwaso head to London

Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi, and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) counterpart Rabiu Kwankwaso will be in London next week.

The Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman (INEC) boss and the candidates will speak at the Chatham House.

Their separate appearances at the independent policy institute come ahead of Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

The think tank group said the event is part of a series examining the general polls and political developments.

10. Nigeria election: Okowa thanks PDP, Atiku for VP ticket

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on Friday thanked the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for selecting him as vice presidential candidate.

The Delta helmsman addressed PDP supporters during the party’s campaign in Ika South and Ika North East Local Government Areas of the state.

The governor noted that since the old Bendel State, nobody from Delta has emerged the country’s leader or deputy.

“I thank the leadership of PDP and our presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for finding me worthy to be the vice-presidential candidate.
