1. Court jails UK ex-convict one year for defrauding hotel

Justice Mojisola Dada of the Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos, on Friday sentenced a United Kingdom ex-convict, Ahmed Adebola, to one year imprisonment for defrauding Radisson Blu Hotel of N4.4 million.

Justice Dada sentenced the defendant after he pleaded guilty to an amended one count of obtaining by false pretence, offence which contravenes Section 312 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had, on May 30, charged the convict on an amended one count of obtaining by false pretence.

The EFCC counsel, Ahmed Yerima, said that the Radisson Blu Hotel Management wrote a petition against the defendant to the commission, after he defrauded the hotel of the sum of N4.4million.

2. You will weep after Peter Obi’s victory, Okupe slams critics

Former presidential spokesperson, Dr Doyin Okupe, has faulted those claiming that the Labour Party
has no structure to win a presidential election.

In a tweet on Friday, Okupe predicted that the LP’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would win the 2023 election.

Okupe, whose name was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission as Obi’s running mate, noted that “those mocking us will weep when Obi wins the presidential election”.

He said, “Many who deride and mock us that we have no structure will weep and gnash their teeth when Obi is elected President in 2023.

3. We’ve deployed over 13,000 officers for peacekeeping missions – IGP

The Nigeria Police Force has deployed over 13, 000 officers to peacekeeping missions in the United Nations, African Union and the Economic Community of West African States.

The police also said beyond personnel, it had also contributed material assets to peacekeeping operations all around the world towards enforcing and maintaining peace in Africa and other countries of the world.

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali disclosed this in a statement on Friday by the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi.

He was quoted to have said this during the appointment ACP Augustine Jagaba as Director in charge of the Peacekeeping Directorate.

4. NCDC pledges commitment to building COVID treatment centre at LUTH

The Director-General of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr Ifedayo Adetifa, weekend disclosed that the Agency had received approval to construct a three-storey COVID treatment centre in at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, with funds accessed from the World Bank.

He said the project was part of its partnership with the hospital in the areas of health emergency response.

Disclosing this while on a formal visit to LUTH also pledged that NCDC’s official relationship with LUTH was very important as one of the largest and foremost Federal Government tertiary health institutions in Lagos.

Adetifa who pledged NCDC’s commitment to constructing the long-awaited centre said they are waiting for the final approval from World Bank on the terms and references including the designs.

5. Nigeria reports 204 suspected cases of Monkeypox in 6 months — NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has disclosed that between January and June, the country has recorded a total of 204 suspected Monkeypox, MPX, cases out of which  62 cases were confirmed to be positive.

Disclosing these during a Virtual media dialogue on Monkeypox titled:”Monkeypox Spread, Infodemic and Public Health Response in Nigeria.”, the Incident Manager, National Monkeypox Emergency Operations Centre, Dr Lateefat Amao, said between 2017 and June 2022, that about 25 States have recorded cases of Monkeypox in Nigeria.

She said: “Monkeypox is endemic in some of Nigeria. The epidemic has been mostly stable over the last five years since the resurgence. Some progress has been made in improving, prevention, detection and response.

6. MonKeypox: No room for complacency, WHO warns

As Nigeria and other countries affected by the current outbreak of Monkeypox continued to battle the spread of the disease, the World Health Organisation, WHO has called on governments and civil society organizations to scale up efforts in the coming weeks and months to prevent monkeypox from establishing itself across a growing geographical area.

WHO insisted that urgent and coordinated action is imperative if countries are to turn a corner in the race to reverse the ongoing spread of the disease.

Stating that the European Region remains at the centre of the expanding outbreak it warned against complacency in the response programmes.

WHO Regional Director for Europe, Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge who gave the warning added that although last week the IHR Emergency Committee advised that the outbreak at this stage does not constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), Kluge said the rapid evolution and emergency nature of the event means that the Committee will revisit its position shortly.

7. Doctors, dentists reject bill to amend University Teaching Hospitals Act

The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has rejected the Bill to amend the University Teaching Hospitals Act, noting that the training of the Medical and Dental Professionals gives them a holistic view of all aspects of patient management.

It further stated that the Bill by Nigeria’s House of Representatives remains a recipe for disaster in the running of the country’s Federal Tertiary Hospitals, as there is a growing body of evidence, the world over, to show that Physician-led hospitals are better managed with measurable advancement in all aspects compared to non Physician-led hospitals.

According to a statement by the President of the MDCAN, Dr Victor Makanjuola, in Abuja: “The attention of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has been drawn to a bill currently in the House of Representatives arm of the National Assembly, entitled “Bill for an Act to amend the University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards etc.) Act Cap U15 LFN 2004” sponsored by Honourable Bamidele Salam representing Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore/Ejigbo Federal Constituency of Osun State.

8. Police arrest two vigilantes for allegedly killing youth in Enugu

Enugu State Police command has arrested two members of the vigilante group, who were involved in the alleged killing of a 22-year-old man, Philip Okoro in Nkpologwu community in Uzo-Uwani local government area of the state.

The victim was allegedly shot on Wednesday and was rushed to the hospital, where he was later confirmed dead on Thursday, 30/06/2022 at about 3pm, by doctors on duty.

His corpse was deposited in the mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Okoro’s death sparked off protest with youths of the community going on rampage and setting ablaze about five houses belonging to the members of the vigilante group.

The youths, who were bent on killing the vigilante members, had mobilized to attack the Nsukka police division where the operatives were taken into custody, but got the information that the men had already been taken to the command headquarters.

9. World Bank appoints Ghana’s Victoria Kwakwa as VP for Eastern and Southern Africa

The World Bank has appointed a Ghanaian national Victoria Kwakwa as Vice President for Eastern and Southern Africa.

The economist, with over 30 years of experience, leads the institution’s engagement with 26 countries.

Kwakwa oversees a portfolio of 313 operations totaling $58billion and an extensive program of analytic work, technical assistance, and policy advice.

The VP will provide support to countries as they face multifaceted challenges including the COVID-19 crisis, climate shocks, food- and energy-fueled inflation and rising debt.

Kwakwa will promotie private sector jobs, economic transformation, human capital, agricultural productivity, infrastructure access, gender equality and reduce conflict drivers.

10. Peter Obi can be president but not this time – Dino Melaye

Former federal lawmaker, Dino Melaye, has said despite the leadership qualities of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, he may need to wait for another election to run for presidency.

In a video posted on his social media handles on Friday, Mr Dino said based on Peter Obi’s view of the country’s challenges, the nation does not need him for now.

According to Dino, the country currently needs someone who would unify the different regions and ethnic groups in the country, not someone like Obi who only wants to cut the cost of governance.

He said, “Peter Obi is one of the finest Nigerians who is intellectually mobile, he is a great Nigerian and by the grace of God, he is qualified to be a president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the nearest future.
