PUNCH NEWSPAPER
1. Catholic bishops warn INEC against manipulating election results
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria has warned the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to ensure that all election results are uploaded to the portal in order to have a credible, free, fair, transparent and peaceful process.
The body warned INEC against manipulating results of Saturday’s governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, so as not to incur the wrath of Nigerians.
The President, CBCN, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji, stated these on Friday, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral, Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, during the canonical erection of the newly-created Catholic Diocese of Aguleri and installation of Most Rev. Denis Isizoh as its pioneer Bishop.
Ugorji expressed disappointment that INEC “failed” to honour it’s promise of conducting a free, fair and credible election during the just-concluded presidential and National Assembly elections in the country.
2. Corps members ready for election, says NYSC DG
The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, says corps members are still ready for the Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections, in spite of apprehensions for their safety.
Ahmed said this during an interview on the Channels Television election program, “The 2023 Verdict”, on Friday evening.
Brigadier-General Ahmed said this while responding to questions about the unwillingness of some of the corps members to return to the polling units after some of them were attacked during the February 25 general elections.
He added that most of the apprehension for the safety of the corps members came from parents.
3. Elections: My ambition not worth life of residents —Gombe gov
Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, on Friday said elections were not a do-or-die affair, adding that his ambition to be re-elected as governor for a second term is not worth the life of any resident in the state.
