1. Thugs invade Edo court, chase staff, cart away documents

There was pandemonium in the Court of Appeal in Benin City late Friday as suspected thugs allegedly supported by persons in security outfit uniforms, invaded the courtroom, chased away court workers and carted away several documents.

It was gathered that some lawyers had approached the Appellate court to file an appeal arising from a judgment of the State High Court on issues relating to the crisis rocking the Peoples’ Democratic Party in Edo State.

The crisis concerned whose faction of the party loyal to the governor of the state, Godwin Obaseki and the Vice Chairman, South-South of the party, Chief Dan Orbih, have the authentic delegates list to participate in the party’s primary elections.

2. FIFA to announce 2026 World Cup host cities June

FIFA plans to announce the host cities for the 2026 World Cup in North America on June 16 in New York, football’s global governing body said Friday.

The contenders for what are expected to be at least 16 venues include 17 stadiums in 16 US cities, with the Los Angeles area submitting both SoFi Stadium in Inglewood and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena – site of the 1994 World Cup final.

FIFA are expected to select three venues each in Mexico and Canada for the first World Cup with three co-hosting nations, with the remainder to be in the United States, where 60 games are planned including all from the quarter-finals.

FIFA awarded the tournament — which will be the first 48-team World Cup — in June of 2018.

3. Transfer: Mbappe considering Real Madrid, PSG offers, says mother

Paris Saint-Germain coach Mauricio Pochettino insisted Friday he has no idea where Kylian Mbappe will play his club football next season as the striker’s contract in the French capital comes to an end.

This is as Mbappe’s mother, Fayza Lamari, told Egyptian media that her son had offers from both clubs and was still weighing up which one to accept.

“All the negotiations are finished. We have an agreement with Madrid and Paris. Now it is up to Kylian to choose,” Lamari told Kora Plus.

Mbappe is expected to reveal in the coming days whether he will join Real Madrid or accept a lucrative offer to stay at PSG, with an announcement potentially being made in the hours after the French champions play their final game of the Ligue 1 season at home to Metz on Saturday.

4. Buhari appoints Adeniran as new Statistician-General

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mr Semiu Adeyemi Adeniran as the substantive Statistician-General of the federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), with immediate effect.

The appointment follows the demise of the former Statistician-General of the Federation, Dr Simon Harry, on 13th April, 2022.

A statement signed by Sufuyan Ojeifo, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, noted that until his appointment, Adeniran was the Director of Demographic and Household Statistics at NBS.

The statement added that the new NBS boss “is a professional statistician of repute with bias for Demography and Social Statistics. “He has over three decades of statistical hands-on experience garnered from various local and international institutions.”

5. LASG clarifies clampdown on Okada

Lagos State Government has described the ongoing enforcement of restrictions on the operations of commercial motorcycles, popularly called okada, in certain parts of the state as a necessary step to curb their indiscipline, save lives and improve security.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, made the remark when he spoke on Channels TV Sunrise Daily about the new enforcement order given by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the backlash recorded in a part of the state.

According to Omotoso, the resurgence of Okada operations and acts of indiscipline being exhibited by riders have become a serious source of concern as many people have lost their limbs and lives through Okada accidents.

According to the commissioner, “Our doctors are complaining that more and more people are coming with Okada-related emergency. About 1,712 accidents have been recorded in Lagos in the first quarter of this year. Out of this figure, about 45 percent; to be precise, 767 of the accidents were caused by Okada. And it is shocking to know that about 54 percent of the victims are between the ages of 30 and 39.

6. Court sentences Dane to death by hanging for killing his wife, daughter

A Denmark man Peter Nielsen was Friday sentenced to death by hanging, by a Lagos High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, (TBS), for killing his Nigerian wife Zainab and three-year-old daughter Petra.

Justice Bolanle Okikiolu-Ighile, gave the verdict, after finding Nielsen guilty of the offence of murder

The judge held” It is the judgment of the court that you Peter Nielsen, is found guilty of the murder of Zainab and Petra Nielsen of April 5, 2018.

“I hereby pronounce that you Peter Nielsen, shall be hanged by the neck till death, may God have mercy on you,” she said.

7. Osinbajo visits Imo, says ‘there’s a lot to be done’

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Friday met with delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo behind closed doors, as part of consultations for his 2023 presidential bid.

In an interview with newsmen in Owerri shortly after the meeting, the vice president said the 2023 general elections was crucial to the future of the country.

The vice president said he had a fruitful deliberation with the delegates on some critical issues that concerned the economy and the future of the country

8. We’re reviewing appointment of first FUTA female VC – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA) chapter said it was still reviewing the processes leading to the appointment of Professor Adenike Oladiji, as the eighth substantive Vice-chancellor of the institution.

It dissociated itself from the position of some of its Concerned Members of its Senate who rejected Prof. Oladiji’s appointment.

A statement by Chairman of ASUU-FUTA, Prof. Oluyinka Awopetu, said the union was yet to meet to discuss issues relating to the new VC’s appointment

9. David Imoh: Police arrest 6 suspected killers of sound engineer, seven others in Lagos

The Police Command in Lagos State has said that it arrested 13 suspected criminals last month in the state.

The Commissioner of Police (CP) in Lagos State, Mr. Abiodun Alabi, said this on Friday while briefing journalists on activities of the command in the month under review.

Alabi disclosed that among those arrested were six commercial motorcyclists, popularly called Okada riders, who were allegedly involved in the gruesome murder of a Sound Engineer, David Imoh, in the Lekki area of the state.

According to the CP, on 12th May 2022, at about 6.30 a.m. at Studio 24, Lekki, Lagos, an Okada rider (name withheld) had a quarrel with his two passengers over fare.

10. 2023: Pro-Biafra coalition backs Igbo presidency

A coalition of pro-Biafra groups has thrown its weight behind the quest for Nigerian President of Igbo extraction

The coalition, made up of pro-Biafra groups from the old Eastern region, said they had resolved to support the clamour for the Nigeria presidency of Igbo extraction, whether from the South-East or the South-South.

In a statement signed by Comrade Udemba Okwudili, the administrative Secretary of the group, they said the people of the region must unite against those “who used divide and rule syndrome against our fathers and are still relevant in their scheme of political subjugation.”
