1. Two APC senators present national awards to Tinubu

Senator representing Lagos West district, Solomon Adeola, and his Ekiti Central counterpart, Opeyemi Bamidele, have presented their national awards to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu.

Adeola and Bamidele received the Commander of the Order of the Niger award from the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, alongside over 440 recipients.

Adeola, on his Facebook page on Friday, shared pictures of himself and Bamidele as they presented their award certificates to Tinubu, whom he described as their mentor.

The Lagos senator wrote, “Bourdillon School Of Progressive Politics: I and Senator Opeyemi Bamidele presenting our National Honour Awards to our leader and mentor, the incoming president of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Bola Tinubu.

2. Senate seeks NIDCOM upgrade to ministry 

The Senate has called for an upgrade of the Nigerian In Diasporan Commission to a ministry in order to meet its obligations to millions of citizens in foreign countries.

The lawmakers made the call on Thursday during an engagement between the Senate Committee on the Diaspora and Nongovernmental Organisations and the officials of the NIDCOM, led by its Chairman, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa.

The NIDCOM boss had earlier told the panel that the agency was having serious challenges in meeting its mandate due to poor funding.

Dabiri-Erewa specifically said her office was finding it difficult to help some Nigerians in critical situations in foreign lands because there were no provisions for foreign trips for her officials.

The Chairman also said the government had yet to reimburse her for the three trips she recently embarked upon on behalf of Nigeria.

She also lamented that the money allocated to the agency was too little and she had to fund a lot of trips personally if she needed to travel unavoidably.

3. Ogun records highest child mortality rate in South-West

The United Nations Children’s Fund has disclosed that Ogun State recorded the highest number of childrens’ deaths in the southwestern part of the country.

The survey conducted by the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with UNICEF and other partners showed that Ogun recorded highest figures in neonatal mortality, infant mortality, postnatal care for newborn, among others in the region.

The Social Policy Specialist of UNICEF, Mohammed Okorie, disclosed this at a two-day media dialogue on the 2022 Multiple Indicator Clusters.

The media dialogue was organised by UNICEF, in partnership with the National Orientation Agency.

Okorie explained that the estimations were “part of the MICS 6 results released by the NBS in August 16, 2022.”

Quoting the NBS, Okorie said, the survey estimated that 56 out of 1000 children between the ages of zero and 11 months died after birth in Ogun State.

UNICEF’s Social Policy Specialist stated further that 68 out of 1000 children between the ages of 0 and less than one year died after their birth in Ogun State.

4. Chimamanda rejects national honour from Buhari

Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie declined the national honour offered to her by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The writer, it was gathered, declined the honour in private as she does not want undue publicity.

Omawunmi Ogbe, the writer’s communication manager, confirmed the development to Guardian.

Ogbe said: “Following the recent conferment of national awards by the President, there have been conflicting reports about one of the announced recipients, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Some social media users say the award-winning writer rejected the award, while others say she accepted it.

5. Ghana deports 16 Nigerians over cyber crimes

The Seme Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), on Friday, said that 16 Nigerians had been deported from Ghana for allegedly committing cyber crimes there.

Dr Chukwu Emeka, the Controller of the Command, disclosed this during a news conference  in Seme, Lagos State.

According to Emeka, these are young Nigerians, who claimed that they were deceived or intentionally went out of the country in search of greener pastures.

6. Use petrol subsidy money to support vulnerable households, IMF tells FG

The International Monetary Fund, IMF, has called on the Federal government to redirect the money spent on petrol subsidy to support vulnerable households to reduce the impact of food shortages and inflation triggered by flooding and climate change.

Making this call in Washington at the press briefing on the Regional Economic Outlook for Africa, Director, African Department, IMF, Abebe Aemro Selassie, stressed that petrol subsidies support families and households that are richer more than they do poorer households.

Among other things, the IMF in the Africa Regional Outlook, said that one of the four urgent policy priorities confronting African countries is tackling food insecurity to protect the most vulnerable; with a focus on effective and affordable measures that channel scarce resources to those who need them most.

7. Obasanjo inaugurates 7bn litre capacity dam at FUNAAB

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday inaugurated a seven billion litre capacity Dam at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), in Ogun.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the dam is situated about 20 kilometres away from the university campus.

Obasanjo, represented by his son, Dr Seun Obasanjo, commended the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kolawole Salako, for the project.

The former president urged other institutions and communities to emulate such gesture, adding that it would enhance the national development.

8. Inaccurate data hindering prevention, control of cancer – Akeredolu

Wife of Ondo Governor Mrs Betty Akeredolu has said lack of adequate number of registeries to collect continuous and complete data on cancer, treatment options, number of survivors and mortalities are making cancer programming difficult to implement in Nigeria.

She lamented that true representation of cancer reality does not exist, which makes it difficult for cancer advocates to express the true picture of the cancer realities in Nigeria.

Speaking in Ibadan at the 25th anniversary and 4th International Breast Cancer Symposium of the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria with thetheme: “Closing the data gap for precision cancer control in Nigeria”, Akeredolu said there is need to improve data system to leverage on artificial intelligence.

She said this would help produce effecient and effective cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment systems for improved cancer.

She said the purpose of the conference was to set up stage for radical implementation of more population based cancer registry in Nigeria, adding that there is need to upscale the system to include accurate collection, management, analysis and reporting of cancer data.

9. Court stops EFCC from seizing Abuja properties traced to Zamfara Gov, Matawalle

A Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, stopped the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from confiscating six properties traced to Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle.

Justice Inyang Ekwo cited Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution which grants absolute immunity to serving governors from civil and criminal proceedings.

In suit FHC/ABJ/CS/709/22, the anti-graft agency sued Matawalle over the landed properties in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

The properties are Plot 729, Idu Industrial Layout; Plot 1327, Cadastral Zone AO5 and Plot 2934, Cadastral Zone AO6, both in Maitama.

Others are Plot 730, Cadastral Zone AO6 and Plot 28048, Cadastral Zone, both in Maitama; Plot 515, Cadastral Zone, BOO in Kukwaba.

10. 2023 budget: Concerns mount over N8.2 trillion recurrent expenditure

When the 2023 annual budget of N20.51 trillion annual budget was presented to the joint session of the upper and lower legislative Chambers, it would have been taken as a normal exercise without raising an eyebrow, considering that the presentation was in line with some relevant provisions of the Constitution.

However, issues of legitimacy and otherwise began to prop up as both Chambers commenced the legislative debate on the general principles of the document on Wednesday.

The debate on the general principles of the budget document, which is officially an executive bill, has nonetheless revealed figures in detail, item by item in line with the priority of government under Capital, Personnel and Recurrent expenditures.

It is in line with this that DAILY POST observed that the recurrent expenditure of the current administration has been alarmingly on steady rise amid the yearning of government to cut cost in governance. For instance, the recurrent expenditure or overhead cost as it is also called for 2023 has surged from N6.9 trillion in 2022 to N8.2 trillion.
