1. Buhari praises ex-First Bank chairperson, Awosika, at 60

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday, lauded the former Chairperson of First Bank Nigeria, Plc, Mrs Ibukun Awosika, on her 60th birthday.

He noted that the businesswoman and leadership coach had deployed her gift of encouraging others in raising champions globally.

Buhari’s birthday message is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled ‘President Buhari greets former chairman of First Bank, Mrs Ibukun Awosika at 60.’

According to Adesina, the President rejoices with Awosika on another milestone, while affirming that her dedication to the service of humanity, particularly young Nigerians and women has made a huge difference in both the private and public sector.

2. Christmas: Gbajabiamila, Mark, Reps seek peace, unity

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase and the minority caucus of the House, have rejoiced with Christians as they mark this year’s Christmas.

Gbajabiamila said Christmas, which is marked to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, is a period for sober reflection and re-dedication to His teachings and ways.

The Speaker, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, enjoined the Christian faithful and other Nigerians to pray for a peaceful and successful general elections in 2023.

Gbajabiamila, in the statement titled ‘Christmas: Gbajabiamila Rejoices with Christians, Calls for National Prayers’, said as the country is getting ready for the general elections, it had become imperative for Nigerians to eschew any form of violence and acts that could undermine the peaceful conduct of the polls.

3. Nigerians won’t spend 2023 Christmas on petrol queues —Atiku

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Friday told Nigerians that they would not spend 2023 Christmas queuing for petrol at filling stations, if they vote for him in February next year.

The special assistant to Atiku on public communication, Phrank Shaibu, made the promise in his Christmas message issued in Abuja on Christmas Eve.

He said, “Atiku Abubakar hereby promises Nigerians that this will be their last Christmas that will be spent at a filling station queuing for petrol. Voting APC in February will be a reinforcement of failure which could push Nigeria into an existential crisis. To Nigerians, we say the ability to change your destiny lies in your hands. Merry Christmas.

“With the fuel scarcity now continuing till December, the government has run out of excuses even as most Nigerians are now at the mercy of black marketers who sell petrol as high as N500 per litre. The NNPC which is the sole importer of petrol has failed to live up to its duties, clear evidence that its privatisation is merely cosmetic.

4. Yuletide: Sanwo-Olu preaches peace, harmony

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has stressed the need for Nigerians, especially residents to continue to live in peace and harmony as they celebrate the Christmas.

He also called the residents to celebrate the season of the birth of Jesus Christ, with moderation.

Sanwo-Olu, who made the remarks, in his Christmas message on Saturday, while speaking to newsmen in Lagos, reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering more dividends of democracy to residents of the state in the years ahead.

The governor, therefore, urged them to protect and use the infrastructure provided by the government very well so that incoming generations can also enjoy the dividends of democracy.

5. Gunmen kill fish farmer in Ogun, disappear with his tricycle

A 32-year old Amos Oyemachi member of Yemule-Ikangba-Agoro Fish Farmers Association in Ijebu-Ode area of Ogun state, who augmented his fishing business with operation of tricycle business has been murdered, while his newly bought tricycle was taken away.

The Chairman of the Yemule-Ikangba-Agoro Fish Farmers Association, Comrade Lazarus Okole, made the this disclosure while briefing newsmen in Ikangba, Ijebu Ode on Saturday.

Following the incident, fish farmers around Ikangba-Agoro road in Odogbolu local government area of the state have pleaded with the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to fix the Ikangba-Agoro-Ijebu Ode road, saying that the deplorable condition of the road now serves as incentive for criminals to operate at will on the road.

Okole who spoke through, Nicholas Eko, the spokesman of the association, disclosed that the poor state of the road has become a nightmare for the users of the road.

6. ‘Politics not dirty game’, Lalong calls for Christians participation

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has called on the Christian community in Nigeria to participate more in politics, stressing it is not a dirty game as being made to believe.

Lalong made this known in a statement by his spokesman, Dr Macham Makut, on Saturday, when he hosted northern Christian leaders in Jos, the state capital.

The governor called on Christian leaders to make demands from candidates vying for political offices.

According to Lalong, this was necessary because anyone with the mandate to rule from God, must work in the interest of all Nigerians and that includes the Christian community.

7. 2023 election not do-or-die affair, says CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has urged politicians not to view the 2023 general election as a do-or-die affair.

It also called on Nigerians to vote God-fearing people.

CAN, in a statement by its president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said: “Another season of Christmas is here again.

“It is that time of the year when Christians all over the world celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, the living Son of God.

8. Lawan, senators, Wase preach love, hope at Christmas

Senate President Ahmad Lawan on Saturday wished Christians in Nigeria well as they join their counterparts across the world to celebrate Christmas.

A former Senate President David Mark; Chairman Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Solomon Adeola, and House of Representatives Deputy Speaker Idris Wase also wished Nigerians a happy celebration.

Lawan in a statement by his Special Adviser (Media), Ola Awoniyi, in Abuja, enjoined Christian faithful to spread the message of love, peace, hope and tolerance which Jesus Christ preached by personal example.

“I heartily rejoice with Christians in Nigeria as they celebrate this annual festival of the birth of Jesus Christ.

9. Christmas: Work harder to secure Nigerians – PFN tells FG

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, in its felicitation message on this year’s Christmas celebration, has urged the federal government to do more to protect Nigerians.

The fellowship said this on Saturday in a statement by its Media Director, Simbo Olorunfemi.

According to the statement, the National President of PFN, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, said Christmas is not just another celebration; it is a reminder of God’s goodness and mercies.

He encouraged Nigerians not to relent in their prayers for the will of God to prevail on Nigeria’s challenges.

10. Anambra deputy governor dismantles roadblock set up by soldiers over traffic

Anambra Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachi Ibezim, has ordered the dismantling of a roadblock set up by soldiers in the state.

The incident happened on Christmas Eve when the roadblock manned by the soldiers caused long traffic on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, causing inconveniences to road users who were travelling home for the Christmas holiday.

A video circulating online showed when the deputy governor alighted from his vehicle after witnessing the long traffic, to confront the soldiers, while ordering his security men to dismantle the roadblock for all road users to pass by.

The deputy governor also took time to control traffic, urging drivers to move fast and avoid unnecessary delays on the road.
