1. Tribunal: Oyetola, APC file cross appeal

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the July 16, 2022, Osun State Governorship election, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, and his party, have filed cross appeal to the judgement of the Election Petition Tribunal that resolved allegation of forgery in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke.

The Independent National Electoral Commission had declared Adeleke the winner of the poll, but the Tribunal panel that heard complaint relating to the poll, annulled Adeleke’s victory and declared Oyetola the winner of the poll, but resolved the issue of certificate forgery in favour of Osun State governor.

INEC, Adeleke, and the PDP have since appealed the judgement to the Court of Appeal, Akure Division.

But in their own cross-appeal, the APC and Oyetola through their Counsel, Mr. Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) and Mr. Akin Olujimi, (SAN) said the Tribunal misdirected itself when it held that the certificate from Atlanta Metropolitan College and a diploma certificate from Penn Foster High School were genuine.

2. Buhari seeks ASUU partnership on varsity funding

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Saturday urged university unions, particularly the Academic Staff Union of Universities, to partner with the Federal Government to arrive at a funding blueprint for the university system.

Buhari said that such a funding blueprint “should take cognisance of local peculiarities and modern realities based on global best practices.”

The President said the incessant industrial actions by ASUU and other unions in the university system always revolve around the issue of adequate funding, stressing that university funding in different parts of the world was not the sole responsibility of the government.

ASUU embarked on eight months of industrial action last year over university funding and other welfare issues which had brought about the current problem of outstanding unpaid eight months’ salaries to the academic staff.

3. Tinubu in Kebbi, promises to revive Argungu festival

The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Saturday reassured the people of Kebbi that he would revive the moribund Argungu fishing festival and boost major investments including agriculture in the state.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by Tinubu Media Officer, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz.

The Argungu fishing festival is a way of life for the people of Kebbi State. It is an annual four-day festival in the state of Kebbi, and other northern states like Niger in the north-western part of Northern Nigeria.

4. Polls: INEC begins training of Supervisory Presiding Officers

Ahead of the forthcoming general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has begun training of Supervisory Presiding Officers.

Speaking after he inspected the venue of the training at Government Secondary School GSS Garki – Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said the staff to be deployed to the field to conduct the elections are currently undergoing training not nationwide.

According to him, the training is a further reassurance of the readiness of the commission to conduct the elections on February 25 and March 11.

5. Atiku alerts Nigerians on APC’s new propaganda tactics

The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has asked Nigerians to be on the look out for a systematic series of falsehoods to be unleashed by the All Progressives Congress Campaign in the run up to the February 25th presidential polls.

He said 10 of such falsehoods told within the last one week have been exposed and debunked by credible fact checkers such as the Centre for Democracy and Development CDD.

Atiku who spoke through his Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr. Phrank Shaibu, in a statement, in Abuja, on Saturday said Nigerians should be weary of claims being made by the APC campaign.

6. We are ready to meet  new Naira notes demand – MINT

The Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company  Plc (popular known as MINT) has said that it was prepared to meet the  demand for new Naira notes.

In a statement, this afternoon it described  media reports that De-la-Rue of the United Kingdom was supplying it paper Substrate, as false.

The company equally debunked the reports that it was having challenges in printing the new Naira notes.

7. Adhoc staff to swear oath of neutrality, says INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that all adhoc staff engaged to assist the commission in conducting the forthcoming general elections shall swear to an oath of neutrality before being deployed.

Chairman of the Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this while inspecting ongoing training for Supervisory Presiding Officers on Saturday.

Yakubu said they owed allegiance to the Nigerian people and not to any political party or candidate in the election, hence the need for them to be neutral.

He told them that while the commission was determined to conduct one of the best elections in the nation’s history, the integrity of the polling officers would have positive or negative effect on the elections.

8. Court restrains AMCON from selling IBEDC

The Federal High Court in Lagos has restrained the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) from selling the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke made the latest order while ruling on an application for interlocutory injunction brought by IBEDC and 10 other defendants in the suit through counsel to the applicants, Dele Adesina (SAN).

The judge specifically restrained the AMCON from “alienating, selling or disposing or transferring the IBEDC pending the final determination of the suit before it.”

The 11 defendants are the integrated Energy Distribution and Marketing Company Limited (in receivership); John Olatunde Ayeni; Dr. Olusola Ayandele; Personal Legal Representatives of the estate of Captain Idahosa Okunbo (deceased) a.k.a. Captain Hosa Wells Okunbo; Akere Ayanwola; Kayode Ojutiku; Folu Olusanya; Mallam Aliyu Ibrahim; Usman Mohammad; Alhaji Abubakar A. Aminu and IBEDC.

9. 2023 election: Nigerian military responds to ‘Atiku meeting, coup plot’

The Armed Forces of Nigeria has condemned the allegation that some of its officers met with a presidential candidate over the 2023 election.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode alleged that the Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and top military personnel met.

A rebuttal Saturday evening by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Acting Director Defence Information, denied the military was involved in a plan to disrupt the general polls.

The spokesperson said the “wicked and very malicious propaganda indicated that a so-called Thursday meeting plotted a Coup d’etat to establish unconstitutional order”.

The Armed Forces expressed dismantled that “politically exposed persons can denigrate themselves into joining agents of destabilisation and violence in making false claims just to heighten tension in the polity”.

10. EPL: Potter reacts as VAR didn’t award Chelsea penalty against West Ham

Chelsea boss, Graham Potter, has given his verdict over the officiating in his side’s Premier League 1-1 draw against West United United on Saturday.

Chelsea took the lead through Joao Felix at the London Stadium in the first half, but West Ham equalized through former Blues player Emerson Palmieri.

During the encounter, Conor Gallagher’s effort from just outside the box struck the arm of Tomas Soucek as he fell to the ground when trying to block the shot.

Chelsea players were up in arms, surrounding the referee as they pleaded for a spot-kick against the host.
