1. Osinbajo jets to Accra for ECOWAS meeting

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday departed Lagos for Accra, Ghana to represent Nigeria at the 61st Ordinary Session of the Authority of the Economic Community of West Africa States Heads of State and Government to be held on Sunday.

Osinbajo will represent the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) at the summit and join other leaders to deliberate on political and security issues in the region.

This was contained in a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, on Saturday.

The statement partly read, “Prof. Osinbajo, standing in for President Muhammadu Buhari at the summit, will join other leaders to deliberate and take decisions on the political, security and humanitarian issues among others regarding the sub-region at the regular ECOWAS summit.

2. Ekiti: My administration’ll sustain stakeholders’ consultations, says Oyebanji

Ekiti State Governor-elect, Biodun Oyebanji, has said that he would sustain his consultations with major stakeholders and leaders in the state till his inauguration in October.

Oyebanji said that the efforts were part of his resolve to close ranks with passionate Ekiti leaders and carry them along in the affairs of the state.

He added that regular consultations with stakeholders and leaders would be a major feature of his administration’s public engagement policy.

The Ekiti state governor-elect gave the assurance in a statement by his media aide, Raheem Adegbola, in Ado Ekiti on Saturday, titled, ‘Ekiti governor-elect intensifies consultation, visits Olanipekun, Falana, Adesina’.

3. We must fix Nigeria, stop Europe-bound migrants through desert – Shettima

Former Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, has decried the migration of Nigerians to European countries for greener pastures through Libya.

The PUNCH reports that no fewer than 774 stranded Nigerians have been repatriated from Libya between August ,2021 and June 1, 2022.

But Shettima believed that the country must be fixed to put a stop to migration of citizens crossing through the desert from Nigeria to Libya with the hope of getting to Europe.

He spoke at the investiture ceremony of the Managing Editor, Northern Operations of The Nation newspapers, Yusuf Ali, as the 11th president of the Rotary club of Abuja, Maitama.

4. CJ grants pardon to 21 inmates in Akwa Ibom custodial centres

THE Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Honourable Justice Ekaete Obot, has granted pardon to a total of twenty-one inmates during her inspection tour of correctional facilities across the state last week.

The Public Relations Officer, Nigerian Correctional Service, Akwa Ibom State Command Mr. Richard Metong disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen weekend in Uyo.

Metong who also disclosed that the CJ who was on her maiden visit to the custodial centres was well received and conducted round the facilities on inspection by the respective officers incharge at each of the centres.

He added that the officers incharge of the various centres while welcoming the CJ and her entourage also used the opportunity to highlight some of the challenges bedeviling the facilities and the service at large.

5. Our hearts bleed for Jude Ise-Idehen, says Minority Reps

The Minority Caucus in the House of Representatives has expressed shock and grief over the sudden death of the member representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency of Edo State, Hon. Jude Ise-Idehen.

In a statement signed by the the minority leader of the House, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu on Saturday, the caucus described the deceased as a humble, peaceful, dedicated, hardworking lawmaker.

“Our hearts bleed. Indeed, Nigeria has lost a patriot; a vibrant and selfless legislator who remained steadfast in his commitment towards the unity, stability and development of our dear nation.

“Hon. Jude Ise-Idehen was a humble, peaceful, dedicated, hardworking and remarkably focused lawmaker; a very kind-hearted and amiable personality who loved Nigerians and stood for the rights and interest of the people.

6. Forgive Mbaka, reopen Adoration ministry, Ohanaeze youths plead with Catholic authorities

The youth wing of apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, OYC, has appealed to the Catholic authorities to forgive Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka and reopen the Adoration Ministry.

It will be recalled that the ministry was shut down after Mbaka’s outburst against the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.

In a statement made available to journalists, the OYC said the prolonged closure of the Adoration Ministry may affect many homes which benefit either through direct employment or charity intervention by the ministry.

The statement was signed by the OYC National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike and the Secretary, Comrade Obinna Achionye.

7. Ex-CJN Tanko: Bowing out in a storm

The abrupt resignation of Justice Tanko Muhammed as the 17th Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) manifested as a rude shock to everyone during the week. It sent many tongues wagging. His resignation from service did not come without intrigues. The 68-year-old reportedly resigned on the grounds of ill health. His resignation comes about 18 months before his retirement in December 2023, when he will clock 69.

Recall that Tanko was sworn in as substantive CJN on July 24, 2019, about six months after he assumed office in an acting capacity. His predecessor, ex-CJN Walter Onnoghen, was suspended in controversial circumstances by President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2019 over allegations of non-asset declaration.

According to Tanko’s profile on the websites of the Supreme Court and the National Judicial Council, he studied law at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria from 1976-1980 and then at the Nigerian Law School where he was called to the bar in 1981.

Tanko served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 2005 and the CJN since 2019. He was formerly a Justice of the Nigerian Courts of Appeal.

8. Tonto Dikeh: I just don’t see myself as actress anymore

Actress turned politician, Tonto Dikeh has said she no longer sees herself as an actress anymore while noting that she cannot deny her talent.

This is coming after Tonto Dikeh was announced the running mate of Tonte Ibraye, the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in Rivers State.

The single mother on an Instagram live said the reason she opted for politics while her acting career takes the back seat becomes she doesn’t see herself as an actress anymore.

9. Boko Haram, ISWAP terrorists targeting Igbo soldiers, we wont allow Islamization of Nigeria – IPOB

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has vowed not to allow Fulanis Islamize Nigeria.

IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, claimed that Igbos are being targeted because they stopped Fulanis from Islamizing the Southeast and Nigeria.

Powerful alleged that terrorist groups like bandits, Boko Haram, Ansaru and ISWAP are targeting Igbo soldiers

A statement by Powerful reads partly: “The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu condemn the recent pre-planned attack by bandits, Boko Haram, Ansaru and ISWAP terrorists that consumed the lives of young Igbo soldiers and (Christian) Military officers who recently passed out from the Nigerian war training college at Jaji Kaduna state.

10. Zamfara NUJ elects new leadership

The Zamfara State council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has concluded its 2022 triennial delegates conference with the election of Comrade Ibrahim Musa Maizare as chairman.

Maizare will oversee the affairs of the council in the next three years.

DAILY POST reports that Maizare defeated his closest rival, Comrade Nasiru Shehu Aula with 68 votes to 31.

In the Treasurership contest, Comrade Jamilu Sani Tsafe also scored 68 votes to defeat Comrade Yakubu Kaura, who polled 31 votes.
