1. NUJ hails tanker driver for averting catastrophe in Delta community

The Nigeria Union of Journalists Delta State Council has commended a heroic tanker driver, Ejiro Otarigho, for averting a fire catastrophe in the Agbarho area of the state.

According to the Union, the newly married driver “had decided not to be selfish with his life and family concerns, but made up his mind to risk his own life to prevent a major fire accident that would have thrown the entire State into pandemonium from happening”.

A statement jointly signed by the state NUJ Chairman and Secretary respectively, Comrades Michael Ikeogwu and Patrick Ochei, said that the tanker driver decided to be patriotic at a time when most Nigerians had lost hope in our dear nation.

“In a situation like this, other drivers would have abandoned the already burning truck laden with diesel on the road; and thereby causing a disaster that would have definitely affected other road users and even lives and properties within that vicinity,” the Union said.

2. Train attack: Terrorists release 11 victims after two months

The terrorists that attacked the Abuja-Kaduna bound AK9 train on March, 28, have released 11 out of the remaining 61 abducted train passengers, after almost three months in captivity.

Alhaji Tukur Mamu, the negotiator and media consultant to controversial cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, said the 11 victims were released on Saturday.

But one of the relatives of the abducted train victims, Dr. Abdulfatai Jimoh, told our correspondent that they had yet to receive an official communication on the release of the 11 victims.

The PUNCH had reported that the bandits had threatened to commence the killing of the abducted passengers should the government fail to meet their demands.

3. Monaco’s Tchouameni joins Real Madrid on six-year deal

France midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has joined Real Madrid from Monaco, both clubs announced on Saturday.

According to sources the 22-year-old has cost the Champions League and La Liga holders more than 80 million euros ($84 million) as well as an additional 20 million euros in bonuses.

The former Bordeaux playmaker has won 11 caps since making his Les Bleus debut in September.

“Real Madrid and Monaco have agreed on the transfer of the player Aurelien Tchouameni, who will be linked to the club for the next six seasons,” they said

4. APC: Why Tinubu is yet to visit pan Yoruba, Igbo groups — Aide

A media aide, Mr Tunde Ramon to All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a party chieftain, Seye Oladejo, have explained why the newly elected flagbearer was yet to visit some pan Yoruba and Igbo groups after the Abuja electoral victory.

Tinubu, a two-term Governor of Lagos State, had last Wednesday emerged the presidential candidate of APC for the 2023 elections, after polling 1,271 votes in the keenly contested primary election of the ruling party, APC, to defeat 13 other contenders to clinch the ticket at the party’s Special National Convention held at the Eagle Square, Abuja.

In a swift move after the declaration as winner, Tinubu, visited President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President, a co-contestant, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, other contestants and interest groups in Abuja.

When contacted to comment on when Tinubu plan to meet with pan ethnic groups, Ramon simply responded, “very soon and in due course Asiwaju will meet with the groups.”

5. Muslim-Muslim ticket: Religion shouldn’t determine choice of Tinubu’s running mate, says APC N’West Chair

National Vice Chairman, Northwest of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Salihu Moh. Lukman has weighed in on the debate regarding the religious belief of the potential running mate to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of his party.

In a statement issued Saturday in Abuja, Lukman said cautioned leaders of the APC against riding on cheap sentiments in picking Tinubu’s running mate.

According to him, religion should not be a determinant.

I’m the statement, Lukman, an ally of the Kaduna state Governor, Malam Nasir el-Rufai said; “The challenge facing Nigerian politics is about opening the democratic space. It is not going to be easy, but Nigerians must be challenged to make hard choices. Important as ethnic and religious identities are, addressing challenges facing the country, require that political leaders are not allowed to ride on cheap sentiments of religion and ethnicity to opportunistically win elections.

6. Father of one stabbed to death by masquerade’s followers in Lagos

When 29-year-old Olatunji Ismaila left his house to seek justice for his friend, who was attacked by a masquerade and his followers on  June 6, little did he realise he was embarking on a mission of no return.

Ismaila, a fashion designer, lived on Isikalu Street, Olodi Apapa area, in the densely-populated Ajegunle area of Lagos State

The curtains fell on the life’s journey of the father of one after the masquerade’s followers stabbed him in the chest.

7. Train attack: Terrorists release 11 of 62 abducted passengers

After about 75 days in captivity, terrorists who attacked the Abuja-Kaduna AK9 train, killed nine passengers and abducted about 65 others, have released 11 of the remaining 62 abductees.

The terrorists attacked the train with over 300 passengers on board on March 28 around Katari and Rijana axis of Kaduna State.

The media consultant of Sheikh Ahmed Gumi, Malam Tukur Mamu, disclosed this on Saturday.

8. One killed, others injured as APC, SDP supporters clash in Ekiti

There was pandemonium in Itaji-Ekiti in Oye Council Area following a clash between some supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) and the opposition Social Democratic Party in Ekiti State.

The incident, which resulted in the killing of one member of the APC, Tope Ajayi, occurred on Saturday as the supporters of the two political parties clashed when they went to the sleepy community for campaigns ahead of next Saturday’s governorship poll.

Apart from the reportedly dead casualty, several others who sustained different degrees of injuries during the fracas are being treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.

9. After my 7-day ultimatum, killers of Owo Catholic church worshippers have all been found – Oyedepo

Bishop David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church has claimed that the gunmen who attacked and killed over 40 worshippers of St. Francis Catholic Church Owo in Ondo State have all been found.

Recall that some bloodthirsty gunmen last Sunday, attacked the church during worship hour and opened fire on people, leading to the death of about 43 worshippers while others were seriously injured.

Oyedepo had while reacting to the news, declared seven days ultimatum for the assailants to be arrested, saying if they escape, then he is not sent by God.

Reports emerged on Thursday night via a trending video that the attackers have been arrested in the state.

The Ondo State Police Command, however, denied the report, saying the information was only a rumour.

10. Gov Obaseki mourns music maestro, Osayomore Joseph

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki has expressed sadness over the death of a popular highlife musician, Ambassador Osayomore Joseph who died on Saturday.

The governor, in a statement he personally signed, described the music maestro as an enigmatic and versatile musician who according to him, had spread didactic messages via his “soulful and sonorous voice”.

Obaseki recalled how the music legend exported the culture of Edo people to the world through his songs.

He said the musician’s contribution to the creative industry in the state is as remarkable as it is transformational, stressing that Osayomore was a crucial voice in the quest to make society better.
