1. Sudan: Universities pledge support for Nigerian students
The chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has acknowledged the efforts of Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State; Summit University, Offa, Kwara State; and American University, The Gambia, for showing interest in the absorption of Nigerian returnee students from Sudan.
Dabiri-Erewa stated this when she received the Vice-Chancellor of Igbinedion University, Prof. Lawrence Ikechukwu Ezemonye in Abuja.
The chairman, in a statement signed by the Spokesperson, NiDCOM, Abdulrahman Balogun, on Saturday gave assurances that the message will be related to the students and those who are interested, will follow the right procedures.
2. Help curb religious tension, Kwara gov tells Islamic organisations
Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, on Saturday called on Islamic organisations in the country to join hands with government in dousing religious tension in all parts of the country.
AbdulRazaq made the call while declaring open the second national conference and awards ceremony of the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria in Ilorin, the state capital.
The governor, who was represented by his special assistant on Religion (Islam), Alh Ibrahim Danmaigoro, praised MMWG for partnering with the government in the state to douse religious tension and supporting its developmental agenda.
3. Two-day old baby dumped in Edo IDP camp
A baby believed to be about two days old was dumped within the premises of the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Uhogua, near Benin, in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The camp proprietor, Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, said an unknown person dumped the baby in the woods surrounding the entrance of the facility at about 11am on Friday, noting that the baby was in dire need of breastfeeding.
He said that the person who dumped the baby left a note pleading that the baby should be taken care of.

4. Tinubu urged to tackle NCDs with SSB tax
Medical professionals, Civil Society Organisations, CSOs, and other stakeholders have urged President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and his vice, Kashim Shettima, to increase the prevailing N10 per litre tax of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages, SSBs, as part of efforts to reduce consumption, owing to the negative health impact they pose to Nigerians.
The concerned citizens, under the aegis of National Action on Sugar Reduction, NASR, made the call during a media dialogue to highlight the significance of healthy food policies, during the week, in Abuja.

Mallam Hamzat Lawal, the Chief Executive Officer of Connected Development (CODE), has revealed why his organisation and another civic establishment, BudgIT, wrote the World Bank concerning the $ 800 million loan sought by the Nigerian government.
The federal government had in April announced its plan to secure the World Bank loan to be disbursed to about 50 million vulnerable Nigerians or 10 million households as part of its fuel subsidy palliatives measures.
The move caused outrage in the country, considering the mounting debt profile of the Buhari administration.
Speaking on Hard Copy, an interview programme on Channels Television, Mallam Lawal noted that the government’s decision not to carry along other stakeholders was in bad taste.
6. Ukrainian President Zelensky meets Pope Francis at The Vatican
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Pope Francis and Italy’s prime minister on Saturday as part of a diplomatic tour also involving Germany, as Berlin unveiled a huge new weapons package ahead of an expected Ukrainian counteroffensive.
“An important visit for (the) approaching victory of Ukraine!” Zelensky tweeted as he arrived in Rome, on his first visit to EU and NATO member Italy since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
Zelensky was due to travel on Sunday to Berlin, a German government source said, where the defence ministry earlier Saturday announced a new weapons package worth 2.7 billion euros ($2.95 billion) for Ukraine.
There was a heavy security presence in Rome for Zelensky’s visit, which began with a formal welcome by President Sergio Mattarella, followed by a 70-minute face-to-face with Meloni.
