1. YABATECH to join ASUP strike -Official

The Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State has said it would join the forthcoming two-week warning strike by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.

The institution said this was in line with its academic union’s resolution.

The strike has been scheduled to commence on May 16, The PUNCH reports.

Deputy Registrar of YABATECH, Mr Joe Ejiofor, told NAN on Saturday that it was not a solitary decision by the college to shut down academic activities.

2. Kukah suspends Catholic Masses in Sokoto, says residence not attacked

The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan-Kukah, has suspended all Masses in Sokoto metropolis, The PUNCH reports.

This was contained in a statement on Saturday signed by the Director, Social Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Rev. Fr Christopher Omotosho.

Omotosho noted that Kukah’s residence was not attacked though rampaging hoodlums vandalised and torched two of the parishes presided over by the fiery preacher.

3. Thousands rally across US for abortion rights

Thousands of activists, many in pink, took to the streets across the United States, on Saturday, in a national day of action calling for safe and legal access to abortion.

The demonstrations are a response to a leaked draft opinion showing that the US Supreme Court’s conservative majority was considering overturning Roe v. Wade, a landmark 1973 ruling guaranteeing abortion access nationwide.

“I just think that nobody has the right to make a decision on somebody else’s body,” said Hanna Williamson, 20, from the city of Suffolk, Virginia, who drove three hours to join several thousand protesters in Washington. “I think it should be left up to every individual. I am fighting for everyone else’s rights in this.”

About 3,000 people assembled in a central square in Brooklyn and prepared to carry a giant pink banner that read: “Our Bodies. Our Futures. Our Abortions.” The protesters, who included Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other influential Democrats, were of all genders and ages and many wore green.

4. I will work with NASS to restructure Nigeria – Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Presidential Aspirant of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), says if he is elected president of Nigeria, he would work with the National Assembly to restructure Nigeria.

Abubakar said this on Saturday in Calabar while addressing party delegates and stakeholders as the party prepares for its May 28 and 29 presidential primary.

The former Vice President said he would give more powers to both the state and local government councils.

According to him, it would be the fault of the electorates if credible people are not elected in 2023.

5. Deborah murder: Attempts to burn Catholic Church, Kukah’s house didn’t succeed; protest ended 3pm

Contrary to reports that protesters have burnt the house of Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Church and its secretariat in Sokoto, Vanguard learned that the properties were not torched.

However, a source, one Niyi, said that protesters actually made attempts to burn it but didn’t succeed.

But they succeeded in setting ablaze a car parked in front of the Church.

6. Kebbi Gov Poll: Malami says decision to withdraw borne out of patriotism

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, on Saturday, confirmed that he has not resigned from his position.

The AGF, however, confirmed that he has withdrawn his ambition to contest the 2023 Kebbi state governorship election.

Malami, who made the disclosure in a statement that was signed by his media aide, Dr. Umar Gwandu, said his decision to pull out from the gubernatorial contest, was borne out of patriotism.

7. Kudirat Abiola’s death: Son wants Buhari to fulfill promise before tenure expiration

Mr Abdul Abiola, the son of late Kudirat Abiola, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to make good his promise by bringing those who killed his mother to justice.

He said this on Saturday via his Twitter handle @AbdulMKOAbiola.

He urged the President to bring those who made Kudirat, his mother a martyr at the age of 44 to book, adding that his confidence in Buhari’s bringing his mother’s killer to justice was unwavering.

8. 2023: Jimoh Ibrahim dissociates self from fake Twitter, Instagram accounts

Mr Jimoh Ibrahim, an All Progressives Congress (APC) aspirant for Ondo South Senatorial District, has dissociated himself from a fake Twitter and Instagram account opened in his name.

The business mogul said this in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen on Saturday in Okitipupa, Ondo State.

9. Deborah Samuel: CAN calls on Christians to be peaceful, law-abiding

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State chapter, has urged pastors and church leaders to appeal to their members to remain peaceful, law-abiding and refrain from any act of lawlessness, and apply emotional intelligence in the face of challenge and provocation.

A statement issued by the Secretary of CAN, Kaduna State, Rev Ma’aji Caleb, said, “I have directed to write and appeal to our Amiable Pastors and Church Leaders to continue to use our God-given roles and Revered pulpits to appeal to our Members to remain peaceful and law-abiding as we are always known. We are blessed because we are always known for peaceful coexistence (Matthew 5:9).”

The statement urged Christians to refrain from any act of lawlessness, and apply emotional intelligence in the face of challenge and provocation.

“I on behalf of the State CAN Chairman request us to pray for the repose of the soul of our sister Deborah Samuel who was gruesomely murdered by her senseless, inhuman and irreligious perpetrators,” the statement stressed.

10. Deborah Samuel: Respect Sultan of Sokoto – Islamic group to protesters

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed for calm in Sokoto over the demonstration that followed Deborah Samuel’s killing.

The Islamic group told the demonstrators to respect the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, the leader of Muslims in Nigeria.

Deborah, a 200 level student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, was lynched on Thursday.

On Saturday, protesters stormed the streets to demand the release of the suspects linked to her murder.

The Police had announced that two persons are in custody. It is unclear if more arrests have been made.

In a statement, MURIC director, Prof Ishaq Akintola noted that now is not the time for division but for peace.
