Top 10 Newspaper Headlines Sunday, May 29th 2022

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. ASUP ends two-week warning strike, NEC meets June on demands

Lecturers in public polytechnics across the country will resume on May 30, 2022 following a directive by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.

The union had on May 16, 2022 commenced a two-week warning strike over the failure of the government to meet some lingering demands.

Some of the demands are the payment of N15bn revitalisation fund for polytechnics, payment of minimum wage arrears, review of conditions of service, among others.

The PUNCH had earlier reported that the Federal Government commenced the payment of the minimum wage arrears, not just for lecturers of polytechnics but for university lecturers and other tertiary institution workers in the country.

2. 200 APC secretariat workers without employment letters, vice chair alleges

The North-West National Vice Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Mallam Salihu Lukman, on Friday expressed concerns that more than 200 employees are working at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja without valid letters of employment.

This was as he expressed concerns that there were some alleged liabilities incurred for legal cases handled without valid contracts.

The development came barely 24 hours after the APC postponed its presidential primary following a six-day extension of deadline for conduct of political party primaries by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday.

Lukman raised the alarm amid a report of fresh leadership crisis in the party in a leaked letter dated May 27, 2022 and titled: ‘Rebuilding APC: Need for new initiatives.’

3. With Peter Obi, we’re confident of winning 2023 presidential election –LP

The Labour Party says with the joining of former governor of Anambra State and presidential aspirant, Peter Obi, and its teeming supporters, the 2023 presidential election is as good as won by it.

The party stated this on Saturday in a statement welcoming Obi, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, into its folds.

The LPP said, “Obi’s grand entrance and the mass movement of his teeming supporters and followers nationwide, confirmed to the world that the 2023 elections was as good as won by our credible political alternatives to the ruling All Progressive Party and the Peoples Democratic Party, especially with the growing backing of the Nigerian people, who are already extremely tired of the administration of the All Progressive Party and the Peoples Democratic Party governments at all levels.

“Therefore, in the light of the crystalising rainbow coalition to save Nigeria in Labour Party, we wish to invite all well-meaning Nigerians, including women, youths, the physically-challenged, the poor, and the well to do, among others, to immediately join forces with the Labour Party to rescue Nigeria from the heightening insecurity and imminent collapse foisted by incompetent rulers of Nigeria, currently trading in delegates all over the country.

4. PRIMARIES: 14 senators, 23 reps lose re-election tickets

Intrigues, suspense and confusion characterized the ongoing primary elections of political parties across the country ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The two major political parties – the All Progressive Congress, APC and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP-are worst hit as many aggrieved members resigned their membership and defected to other political parties to pursue their aspirations.

At least, 14 serving senators and 23 House of Representatives members may not be returning to the National Assembly. While some contested for governorship tickets and won, others lost their return bids to their rivals.

Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege; Aishstu Dahiru, APC Senator representing Adamawa Central, and Senator Sandy Onor, won governorship tickets of the APC and the PDP in Delta, Adamawa and Cross River states respectively.

5. IMO: Thugs chase Akeredolu’s wife from APC primary venue

Thugs, yesterday, invaded the venue of the primary conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to elect a candidate for Imo east senatorial district.

Betty, wife of Rotimi Akeredolu, governor of Ondo, who is one of the aspirants for the senatorial seat, was chased from the venue by the thugs.

Speaking with journalists at the Imo APC secretariat after security operatives brought the situation under control, Betty urged the national working committee (NWC) of the APC to reject any plan by the party in the state to present a consensus candidate for Imo east district.

According to her, no election has been conducted for the APC senatorial ticket for the area.
“I am pleading with the NWC of our party to know that any result coming from this kangaroo election from Imo state for Imo east senatorial district should be rejected. There was no election,” she said.

6. APC Reps Primaries: Hoodlums cart away voting materials in Isoko Fed constituency

HOODLUMS, Friday night, invaded the Oleh Civic Centre venue of the All Progressives Congress, APC, House of Representatives primaries of Isoko Federal constituency, carting away voting materials.

7. Ogun PDP: Fresh crisis as factions renew rivalry over guber ticket

It is now obvious that the several efforts of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unite the warring groups within the Ogun State chapter of the party did not yield the desired results. Fresh crisis erupted within the troubled party during the week as the political gladiators and the various interest groups within the PDP in the state renewed their rivalry over the gubernatorial ticket of the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Our correspondent gathered that the outcomes of the governorship primary election conducted in the state on Wednesday have once again triggered another round of infighting, with the two factions claiming to have produced the authentic governorship candidate of the PDP for next year’s election. Party sources fear the new wave of infighting may negatively affect the performance of the opposition party during the general elections.

Following months of mutual distrust, two governorship candidates emerged from two different parallel primaries conducted by two parallel factions of the party at separate locations in Abeokuta, the state capital. This is in defiance to warnings by the national leadership of the party that no state chapter should conduct parallel primary elections. The leadership of the party had sent delegations round state chapters perceived to be in crisis ahead of the primary elections.

But such efforts proved abortive in Ogun state. While the party’s primary election that produced Ladi Adebutu as PDP gubernatorial candidate was held with the supervision of party executives at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Segun Sowunmi, spokesperson of Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign in 2019, emerged governorship candidate at a parallel PDP primaries organised at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Abeokuta.

8. Southeast elders decry killings, general insecurity

The insecurity and tension in the South East of Nigeria took an unprecedented turn last Sunday when unknown gunmen reportedly hacked down a pregnant woman and her four children in Isulo, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The woman, Harira Jubril and her children: Fatima, 9; Khadijah, 7; Hadiza, 5 and Zaituna, 2, were found in a pool of their blood, having been riddled by bullets by unknown gunmen suspected to be of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It was said that the bike man who conveyed them escaped death by the whiskers.

It was the most horrid of the horrid news emanating from that region in recent months.

That same Sunday, five other motorcycle riders were also reportedly killed and their bikes burnt in Onocha Local Government Area of the state. Four of the bodies were recovered and deposited in a morgue, while the fifth was burnt to ashes.

Another man, identified as Abdullahi, who sold suya (roasted meat) by the roadside at Nnanka, was also killed at his suya spot, his body left by the roadside that Sunday evening.

9. Abia 2023: Ikpeazu faces Ikonne succession battle

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, it will not be an easy journey for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate in Abia State, Prof. Uche Ikonne.

This is considering the trending political disaffection, realignments and defections rocking the party.

This recent development followed the emergence of Ikonne as the PDP standard gubernatorial flagbearer, a development that is questioning the Abia Charter of equity signed by the founding fathers.

Ahead of the fourth Republic in 1999, old Abia State was broadly divided into the Aba and Bende political blocs.

10. How Northern solidarity gave Atiku victory – Reno Omokri

A socio-political activist, Reno Omokri has attributed the victory of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar at the just concluded Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential primary elections to “Northern solidarity”.

DAILY POST recalls that Atiku was endorsed by some Northern stakeholders prior to his victory against the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

According to a post on his verified Facebook page, Reno explained that Atiku emerged winner of the presidential election following the decision of Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State to step down for the former Vice President.

Wike had supported the presidential ambition of Governor Tambuwal in the 2019 presidential election against Atiku.

Reno stated that the South needs to learn from the North on how to play such politics.
