1. Media practitioners must protect democracy in reportage – Gbajabiamila

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila has tasked media practitioners to protect Nigeria’s democracy in their reportage.

Gbajabiamila made the call on Saturday at a workshop organised for members of the House of Representatives Press Corps in Abuja.

The workshop, titled “Deepening Legislative Knowledge through Critical Reporting’’,  was organised by the Office of the Speaker for media practitioners in Abuja.

The speaker said that democracy was a fragile construct, adding that it depended on the support of the electorate and required active participation by an informed citizenry.

2. Ember months: Delta NSCDC deploys special forces

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Delta State has deployed its special forces to forestall the spate of insecurity and activities of criminals across the state in the months heralding the Yuletide, popularly referred to as ‘Ember Months’.

The State Commandant of the NSCDC, while speaking through the Public Relations Officer, Dsc Emeka Okwechime, said it had become imperative for the Corps to ignite the forces in the 25 Local Government Areas of Delta, being a proactive security agency of the Federal Government saddled with the responsibilities of protecting lives and property with a complementary duty of maintaining and sustaining peace and order.

He explained that the special forces were drafted from the Department of Intelligence and Investigation, Agro-Rangers Squad, Crisis and Disaster Management Dept, The Snipper Combatants (Female Squad), the Armed Squad, the Counter Terrorism Unit CTU, SWAT among others.

According to him, the steps were designed to effectively checkmate all forms of criminality and allow for free movement of persons, goods and services before, during and after the Yuletide.

3. IPOB can’t threaten Buhari’s visit, says Imo govt

Ahead of the visit of the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to Imo State on Tuesday, the state government on Saturday dismissed the threat issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

At a press conference in Owerri on Saturday, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, said that IPOB can’t threaten the president.

Emelumba, who was reacting to a threat issued by IPOB declaring a sit-at-home in the state on Tuesday, said that security operatives were ready for Buhari’s visit to the state.

4. COVID-19 still ravaging lives, Red Cross warns Nigerians

The International Federation of Red Cross, West Africa, on Saturday warned Nigerians not to lose guard of the ravaging effects of COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Dr Johann Ojukwu, Red Cross Health and Care Officer, Abuja office, gave the warning in Lokoja while speaking at the end of a road show to sensitise residents on COVID-19 vaccines.

“The complacent attitude of Nigerians to COVID-19 vaccines is very dangerous and worrisome to the wellbeing of the nation.

“We have observed that Nigerians have stopped coming out to be vaccinated against the disease, thereby constituting serious threat to public health.

5. Alleged fraud: Seek God’s forgiveness, Ogun ex-Deputy Speaker tells Oluomo

The erstwhile Deputy Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon Dare Kadiri has called on the embattled Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo to seek forgiveness from God over the various infractions going on in the Assembly rather than blaming him needlessly for his travails.

Kadiri, who was reacting to a statement personally signed by the Speaker on Friday alleging that Hon. Kadiri was instrumental to his travails with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said the Speaker need to bury his face in shame rather than pointing accusing fingers on others as the architect of his misfortune

The statement read, “I am constrained to respond to a statement credited to the Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, to the effect that my petitions are connected to his current prosecution for corruption”.

“Ordinarily, I would not have bothered joining issue with Mr Speaker in order not to prejudice the EFCC charges pending against him before the Court”.

6. JBPT intercepts 415 bags of rice on Badagry waterways

The Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) Sector 2 South-West, Lagos says it has intercepted 415 bags of 50kg rice loaded inside two boats being smuggled to the country along Badagry waterways.

It was reported that JBPT comprises officers of Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs, and DSS, coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).

Mr. Nurudeen Hassan, the Controller, JBPT, Zone 2, disclosed this during a press briefing at Gbaji Checkpoint along Seme expressway on Saturday.

7. NDA attack mastermind escapes as troops gun down deputy, others

Notorious bandit Boderi Isiya said to be responsible for security breach at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Kaduna and abduction of students of the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation has narrowly escaped neutralisation.

But his deadly second in command and several other fighters were gunned down by Army troops in Chikun local government area of Kaduna state.

Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan made these known in a statement.

8. Mamu being persecuted Gumi cries out

Islamic scholar, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, lashed out yesterday at the Department of State Services (DSS) for what he branded the persecution of his associate, Malam Tukur Mamu.

Mamu was arrested in Cairo, Egypt on Tuesday at the prompting of the DSS, and deported to Nigeria immediately.

The organisation said subsequently that security agencies executed valid search warrants on Mamu’s residence and office during which incriminating materials, including military accoutrements and large amounts in different currencies and denominations as well as financial transaction instruments, were recovered.

But Gumi, in his first reaction to the development, said it was persecution akin to the ordeal of the late Sardauna of Sokoto Sir Ahmadu Bello and former Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed.

People of the South West region have been urged to stop profiling Fulanis in the area as criminals and lawbreakers

The Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Chief Audu Ogbe, said this in Abeokuta, the Ogun State on Saturday, during the inauguration of the South West Executive of the ACF.

In his address, Ogbe, who was represented by the ACF Administrative Secretary, Alhaji Munir Mohammed, noted that the Ogun is one of the few States that accommodate people from diverse culture, religious and political affiliations.

10. PDP crisis: You’re dancing, confidence vote won’t save Ayu – Wike mocks Secondus

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, on Saturday, mocked the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Uche Secondus, for celebrating the vote of confidence passed on his successor, Sen. Iyorcha Ayu, by the party’s National Executive Committee.

Wike said no amount of confidence votes would save Ayu from being exiled from the position.

The governor disclosed this at a grand reception for over ninety defectors from various political parties into the PDP at the Isaac Adaka Boro Park in Port Harcourt.

According to him, Secondus is dancing and seemed to have forgotten history that it wasn’t the first time a sitting national chairman was removed from office after a vote of confidence was passed on him.
