1. I will mobilise for Tinubu – Oloriegbe

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Dr Ibrahim Oloriegbe, on Saturday, said he would, alongside his supporters, mobilise and put in work to ensure the victory of All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, during next year’s election.

He said the victory of the former Lagos State governor would mark the beginning of the desired change in the country.

The aggrieved Kwara Central senator who failed to secure a return ticket during the last primary election of APC in Kwara, also pledged to work for the success of Tinubu at the poll.

The lawmaker who spoke in Ilorin during a reception organised for him by his family members and supporters added, “It is payback time by Kwarans for the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

2. FG slams ASUU, insists on no-work-no-pay

The Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Nanah Opiah has slammed the Academic Staff Union University over the lingering impasse between the union and the Federal Government.

Opiah, while expressing dismay over the more than the 200 days old strike embarked upon by ASUU since February 14th, 2022, said the Federal Government has done his best to resolve the issues raised by ASUU but they have been adamant to call off the strike.

The minister who spoke when he visited Federal University Lokoja, Kogi State said the ‘no work no pay’ policy stands.

He said, “The Federal Government cannot pay lecturers for what they did not work for. The strike has continued to portray the country in a bad light and has succeeded in causing more pains for parents and students.”

3. Nigerians should learn from Rwanda, says Jonathan

Former president Goodluck Jonathan has asked Nigerians to learn from Rwanda on how to build a nation devoid of ethnic biases.

Jonathan in his keynote address to mark the 80th birthday anniversary celebration of an elder statesman, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, in Owerri, Imo State, on Saturday, said Nigerians should emulate the people of Rwanda in getting over their National challenges.

The ex-president said that Nigerians had played ethnic politics to the detriment of their national cohesion.

He urged Nigerians to use the 2023 general elections to right the wrongs.

4. ‘It’s evil propaganda’ — Army denies alliance with bandits, herdsmen

The Nigerian Army has debunked the allegation by a non governmental organization, Intersociety that it (Army) was working in synergy/cohorts with bandits and herdsmen to carry out terrorists attacks against people of the South East and Benue State

A statement signed by the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig Gen Onyema Nwachukwu titled, ‘Nigerian Army will not succumb to Intimidation by Intersociety and IPOB noted that it was Intersociety that was working with IPOB and ESN as it has never condemned the killings and attacks of the militiant group.

The statement said, “The attention of the Nigerian Army (NA) has been drawn to a libelous, spurious and derogatory narrative credited to one so called International Society for Civil Liberty and Rule of Law (Intersociety), alleging that the Nigerian military, especially the NA is working with armed herdsmen/bandits to terrorize the Eastern part of the country and Benue state.

“A cursory look at the content reveals a business-as-usual pattern of propaganda by the well known, paid jobbers and fifth columnists christened Intersociety who after several failed attempts, still unrepentantly and shamelessly continues to dissipate its energy in mudslinging, all in a futile effort to drag the image and reputation of the NA in the mud, while promoting irredentists, lawless and outlawed organizations.

5. Nigeria recorded 48 new cases of monkeypox in one week — NCDC

Nigeria recorded 48 additional cases of monkeypox between Aug. 8 and Aug. 14.

The 48 cases were recorded in 16 states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) stated on its website on Saturday.

It stated that Lagos State topped the list of new infections with 15 cases, while Abia and Ogun recorded five cases each.

Benue, Edo, Rivers and the FCT had three cases each; Bayelsa and Ondo had two cases each, while Cross River, Anambra, Gombe, Imo, Katsina, Oyo and Osun recorded one case each.

The latest infections raised the number of cases in Nigeria since the beginning of the year to 220, the NCDC stated, adding that the infections were recorded in 29 states.

6. Southern govs including Wike believe in Southern Presidency — Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, Engr. Dave Umahi has challenged his colleagues in the South to have the honour to admit that they all believed in having a Nigerian president from the South just like the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike is currently doing.

In an Arise Television breakfast show on Friday, Umahi said all Southern Governors had initially agreed that the presidency should be rotated on the basis of North and South, challenging his colleagues to have the honour to admit that they believe in having a Southern presidency.

He also dismissed reports that he had recently met with Gov. Wike in London, adding however that he remained a personal friend of the Rivers helmsman.

7. Why work on Eastern rail line was suspended – FG

The Federal Government on Saturday explained why China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCEC), suspended work on the eastern rail line.

It said the contractor was compelled to pause work along the corridor due to insecurity and vandalisation of rail infrastructure.

Minister of Transportation, Mu’azu Jaji Sambo disclosed this during an inspection tour of the project in Port Harcourt.

8. Jigawa floods: Tinubu mourns death of 51 persons

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has mourned the death of 51 persons who lost their lives in the recent flooding that occurred in Jigawa State.

Many communities across the state were affected and four local governments were badly hit by the flood caused by heavy rainfall that rendered hundreds homeless and killed 51.

Tinubu, in a statement on Saturday signed by Tunde Rahman of his Media Office, described the tragedy as devastating.

9. Imo: Army to commence shooting exercise Sept 5, warns public

The Nigerian Army has advised Imo residents to keep off the range area for its Range Classification Exercise slated for September 5-9.

This is contained in a release made available to DAILY POST by Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 34 Artillery Brigade of the Nigerian Army, Obinze, Owerri, Imo State, Capt. Joseph Akubo on Saturday.

Akubo said that the exercise was an annual event involving the use of arms and live ammunition, thus the need for the civilian public to stay away from the range area.

“The Range Classification Exercise is an annual event of the Nigerian Army aimed at testing personnel effectiveness in weapon handling and firing efficiency. It is an annual event which involves the use of arms and live ammunition.

10. NMS graduands to undergo additional six weeks training to adequately defend Nigeria – COAS

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Faruk Yahaya, has stated that the passing out boys of the Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, will undergo further training to adequately prepare them for the defence of the nation.

The COAS, in a statement signed by the Director General, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, made the remarks on Saturday at the 64th Passing Out Parade of the NMS Boys at Chindit Cantonment, Zaria in Kaduna State.

The COAS, who was the Special Guest of Honour and Reviewing Officer at the occasion, disclosed that the graduands would undergo a 6-week training at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry to prepare them for future tasks.

“This is to enable them effectively contribute their quota in combating contemporary security challenges experienced in the nation. appreciate the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Mohammadu Buhari for his unwavering support and encouragement to the Nigerian Army,” he explained.
