1. Terrorists attack Kaduna, kidnap Ango Abdullahi’s in-law, others
Terrorists in large numbers invaded Yakwada village in Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State and kidnaped the daughter-in-law to the Convener of the Northern Elders’ Forum, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, her four children, and others on Tuesday night.
It was gathered that the terrorists also abducted several others and a patrol guard was killed in the process.
The daughter-in-law, Ramatu Samsila, is married to the Village Head of Yakawada, Alhaji Rilwan Saudu, who is the son of the elder brother to Abdullahi, a former Vice Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in Kaduna State.
Our correspondent gathered that the hoodlums also abducted some neighbours of the Village Head.
According to the source, who pleaded for anonymity, the terrorists who came in with sophisticated weapons, took away two of the wives of the neighbours, who are nursing mothers.
“They also killed a security guard in the area while the operation which lasted several hours.
2. Obi, Datti to speak at LP summit Thursday
The Coalition for Peter Obi has said the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed will on Thursday deliver a series of lectures at a meeting involving the leadership of the party, candidates in the 2023 elections and a coalition of 64 support groups.
The event themed, ‘Youth, Governance and New Nigeria’, is organised by the Labour Party and the Peter Obi group.
The group said the event would take place at the International Conference Centre Abuja, on Thursday.
In a statement issued and signed by the Chairman of the Coalition group, Marcel Ngogbehei, on Wednesday, the organisers said programmes lined up at the event would give orientation about the agenda of Peter Obi for a new Nigeria.
3. One suspect not part of Owo attackers – Akeredolu
The Ondo Sate Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has stated that one of the five arrested suspects listed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor, is not one of the suspected attackers of the St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo.
In a statement on Wednesday, titled, “Akeredolu Clears Air On Arrest Of Kuje Prison Escapee, Idris Ojo,” signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde, Akeredolu noted that there was a mix-up by Irabor.
Irabor had announced on Tuesday that five suspected masterminds of the Owo attack had been arrested.
He said, “On August 4, the military, in a combined operation with the Department of State Service, arrested four terrorists at Eika in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
“On August 7, one Idris Ojo (37) was apprehended at Aiyetoro in Ondo State. He was one of the high-profile Islamic State of West Africa Province members that escaped from Kuje Prison.
Clarifying, the statement from the Ondo State Government read, “The attention of the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has been drawn to the announcement of Idris Ojo as one of the attackers of St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, arrested by the security agencies.
“Governor Akeredolu acknowledged the confusion which the statement had created in the public space, considering that the ugly event of the June 5 attack in Owo preceded the unfortunate incident at Kuje prison.

4. Confusion over alleged killing of Ebubeagu commander in Imo
Confusion has continued to trail the claim by gunmen numbering four for allegedly killing of man described as commander of the Ebubeagu Security outfit in Imo state.
It was gathered from a video which went viral on social media, showing how the young man in red and blue jeans was shot to death and dragged through the forest and dumped in a pit in forest.
But at the time of filing this report, the particular forest and the community where the incident reportedly took place were not made known
However, the confusion was that some persons said to be relatives to the murdered young man came out to condemn the video saying; “The man killed was innocent and his Ugochukwu Oliora, from Amaebu in Orsu local government area of Imo state and not the mosabi.”
5. FG to deploy only armed personnel in Prisons
Miffed by the recent attack on Kuje Prisons, the Federal Government has directed that only personnel trained in the use of sophisticated arms be deployed to man its prisons.
Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola gave the order on Wednesday in Kaduna at the passing out parade of newly commissioned officers of the Nigerian Correctional Service NCoS.
Media Aide to the minister, Sola Fasure in a statement said Aregbesola who was the reviewing officer, charged the officers to be firm and courageous in the discharge of their lawful duty.
“You are therefore required to be firm and courageous in carrying out your lawful duties. Our facilities are sacred and inviolable. They are a red zone and we shall defend them with the resources at our disposal. Let me remind you all that we are all stakeholders in the quest to restoring lasting peace in our country. Every hand must therefore be on deck.
6. 2023: APC to hold emergency NEC next month
As part of measures to put its house in order ahead of the February general election, the ruling All Progressives Congress APC is contemplating an emergency meeting of its National Executive Committee NEC soon.
The NEC meeting had become necessary following the expiration of the 90-day transfer of its powers to the Senator Abdullahi Adamu-led National Working Committee NWC of the party at its 11th meeting on April 20 in Abuja.
The 90 days of power transfer which started on the 20th of April expired on the 22nd of July, 2022
While the NWC which met on Wednesday is proposing the NEC for next month, it was gathered that the final decision would be subject to approval by President Muhammadu Buhari.

7. Court remands alleged ammunition smuggler
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos Wednesday remanded an alleged firearms smuggler, Buraimo Taofeek Olaoluwa, in the custody of Nigerian Correctional Services (NCoS) till August 18, when his bail application will be determined.
Justice Akintayo Aluko made the order, following Olaoluwa’s plea of “not guilty” to a one-count charge, brought against him by the Nigerian Customs Services (NCS).
The NCS alleged that Olaoluwa, of 2, Fisayo Street, Asherifa, lle-Ife, Osun State, smuggled into the country, high calibre and sophisticated firearms and ammunition.
He was alleged to have committed the offence on March 18, 2022 around 3:45am.
Some of the weapons include five Tavour 21 556mm Israeli rifles, one sword, seven pieces of OCK pistols, five M191 pistols developed by the United States Army, 28 pieces of guns manufactured by Colt Defence (USA), 50 pieces of rifle slings, 40 pieces of gun powder packs, 30 pieces of Rifle Butts and Glasses, 16 packs of silencer and 10 batteries (Small).
8. Bode George asks Ayu to quit as PDP chair
Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy Chairman Chief Olabode George has said the National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, should honour his promise to resign if the presidential candidate is picked from the North.
He said the emergence of the chairman and flag bearer from one zone has violated the principle of inclusivity.
George, a retired Naval Commodore and one-military governor of Ondo State, also urged the main opposition party to put its house in order ahead of next year’s polls.
He advised the presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, and Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike to sheathe their swords in the interest of the party.
George, who spoke with reporters in Lagos on the state of the nation, urged Wike to emulate him by making sacrifice for the platform.
The party elder said although he aspired to serve as national chairman, he had to bury the ambition when it was not zoned to the Southwest, contrary to the expectation of party faithful in the region.

9. FG dismisses report of shortage of passport booklets
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has dismissed reports of shortage of passport booklets across the nation.
Aregbesola made the disclosure on Wednesday during the roll out of “enhanced e-passport” and commissioning of the passport production center in Port Harcourt which covers Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers and Rivers States.
The Minister described those peddling news of passport shortage as “unpatriotic and unscrupulous Nigerians”, insisting that the “enhanced e-passport is a product of the latest technology” which cannot be seen in most advanced countries.
He said his ministry is leaving “no stone unturned” in the quest in making passports available for Nigerians who desired it, warning passport applicants against patronizing “scammers”.
10. Top officials in some banks gambled, stole billions – EFCC
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday said some banks failed as a result of mismanagement by top officials.
The chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa spoke in Lagos at a workshop themed “Effective Investigation and Prosecution of Banking Malpractices that Led to the Failure of Banks” organized by the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC).
The police officer called for collaborative measures by relevant stakeholders as a way of militating against bank failure.
Bawa said forensic analysis of the annual reports, statements and other financial documents of failed banks investigated by the EFCC showed a pattern.
Represented by Ahmed Ghali, EFCC Lagos Zonal Commander, he lamented that banks fell short of expectations due to fraud, mismanagement, inexperience and initial absence of regulatory laws and authorities.
