The Senator representing the Jos South/Jos East federal constituency, Dachung Bagos, on Wednesday cautioned the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to ensure proper implementation of the recovered 23 million Abacha loot returned by the US government.
He warned the presidency to ensure that the recovered funds are not diverted to elections and electioneering just like it was done in 2018.
The senator made the statement when he appeared on Politics Today, a programme on Channels TV.
He said, “These funds are critical and we want Nigerians to be aware of the situation because we don’t want the funds diverted to elections at the last minute of the administration.
“In 2018, it was during election period that the N5,000 social intervention programme was initiated and it was through Abacha’s loot.
The Kwara State Government has settled the ₦22.5million outstanding licence fees to the National Broadcasting Commission, which accumulated since 2006.
The state governor, Mallam Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, gave the approval for the immediate payment of the ₦22.5m to the Commission.
The NBC, last Friday, closed down Radio Kwara FM 99.1, AM and Kwara Television stations and 49 other Radio and Television stations across the country over backlog of debt owed by the media stations.
However, the Kwara State Commissioner for Communications, Mr Olabode Towoju, in a statement issued on Wednesday night in Ilorin, stated that the state government had paid ₦10m out of the initial ₦32.5m debt in September last year.
According to Towoju, in the statement signed by the Press Secretary in the Ministry of Communications, Ayobami Ashaolu, “Kwara State is blessed with a responsible and highly responsive governor. This debt was passed down from the previous administrations in the state since 2006.
“As someone who puts Kwara first, the governor is committed to meeting people’s expectations and exceeding such, and this can also be likened to the way he promptly paid off the UBEC counterpart funds that the administration before him did not pay.
The wife of Kazeem Ali, a chieftain of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers, kidnapped in Apomu, Osun State, has said her husband’s abductors are no longer reaching out to his family.

Minister of Defence, Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi (rtd) on Wednesday hosted Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria to promote military ties between the Armed Forces of the two countries.

The state’s Epidemiologist, Mrs Peace Nwogwugwu, made the assertion on Wednesday in Umuahia.

Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Prof Bolaji Owasanoye on Wednesday berated lawyers for aiding money laundering and abetting corruption.
Owasanoye spoke as a discussant on the topic “How corruption fuels Insecurity and Bad Governance : The Role of Lawyers in Tackling Corrupt Practices in Nigeria” at the ongoing Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA held at Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island.
He said lawyers act as middle men for suspects in most money laundering and corruption cases.
Citing a case under investigation where the money involved was traced to the account of a lawyer,
Prof Owasanoye said:
“When we got to the account, the looted money has been further transferred to so many accounts in an effort to frustrate investigation.”
The Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have sharply disagreed on the proposed establishment of Electoral Offences Commission (EOC).
To INEC, EOC would not only help to take the campaign against electoral malpractices to “highly placed sponsors” but relieve it of the extra burden of prosecuting all electoral offenders.
But the EFCC countered the electoral umpire, arguing that the EOC was unnecessary. The anti-graft agency argued that different laws already empowered it, the Police, the Independent Corrupt Practices and other- Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to arrest and prosecute electoral offenders.
INEC and the EFCC made their positions known during a one-day public hearing of a “Bill for an Act to Establish the National Electoral Offences Commission and Related Matters 2022” conducted by the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters in Abuja yesterday.
