1. We’re implementing new strategies to end insecurity – Irabor

Following the rising insecurity in the country, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, said the military was implementing new strategies that would bring an end to the scourge in Nigeria.

He also said the military was working on upgrading the intelligence management procedures of the defence and security sector to strengthen the overall security architecture in the country.

Irabor stated these while delivering a lecture at the National Defence College on the topic “National Security and Development: Strategic Options for Nigeria’’ on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria is working round the clock to implement several new strategies that will bring about an end to various security challenges in Nigeria.

“To this effect, we are working on upgrading the intelligence management procedures of the defence and security sector to strengthen the overall security architecture in the country.

“In addition, the thrust of our foreign policy should also be re-engineered to ensure that Nigeria is actively engaged in the promotion of peace and security within our sphere of influence in West and Central Africa.”

2. Don’t abandon security for elections, Olawepo-Hashim tells FG

A chieftain of the All Progressive Congress, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, on Wednesday, raised concerns about the current security challenges in the nation, saying it was more pressing than the 2023 elections.

He warned that the government “must not concentrate only on permutations on the 2023 elections to the detriment of urgent national security concerns.”

Olawepo-Hashim, who is a former presidential candidate of Peoples Trust in the 2019 elections, gave the warning in a statement titled, ‘National security concerns more pressing than 2023 elections’, obtained by journalists in Abuja.

He said, “We must have a nation first before elections, and our people must be alive and safe first to be able to vote. The barbarians are at the gate of the capital, our Republic is under threat, our tested ways of life pluralism, democracy, state secularism, are about to be imperiled. The clock is ticking, time is running out, the forces of evil are set to take the capital.

“Despite the offensive of the military to clean up the bushes in the capital, the areas surrounding the capital are still in the hands of the enemy and they retain the capacity, flexibility and initiative to launch attacks at any place and time of their choice.

“We should never surrender through in-action, limited action or wrong and slow response to the urgent threat confronting our father land, our response must be deep, broad and all encompassing.”

3. Terrorists seeking cheap points with AIG’s attack — FG

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, described the attack on the convoy of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 12 headquartered in Bauchi, Audu Madaki, as an attempt by terrorists to score “a psychological point”.

Responding to a question on what the attack means for the FG, Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed told State House Correspondents that “the government is taking the job of security very seriously.”

The PUNCH reports that suspected terrorists attacked the convoy of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, injuring him and killing his orderly.

Madaki was said to be on his way to Abuja from Bauchi when the terrorists ambushed and attacked him between Barde and Jagindi area in Kaduna State at about 02:30 pm, Tuesday.

Although the AIG Madaki survived with gunshot injuries, his orderly was shot dead.

4. Boko Haram abducts Health Worker in Borno

Barely quite sometime when the incident of Kidnapping did not take place in Borno, a fresh incident occurred on Wednesday when suspected members of dreaded Boko Haram/ISWAP laid ambush and abducted a Medical Worker, Babagana Bulama.

The fresh incident took place along Nganzai- Monguno road in Northern Borno Senatorial District.

The Victim, Bulama who work as Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) staff with Borno State Government was on an official duty when abducted by yet to be identified gunmen.

Vanguard gathered that this is not the first time such incidence of abduction is taking place, as many staff working with International Non -Governmental Organizations, INGOs felt preying the same road in recent times, including abduction of a photo Journalist turned Humanitarian workers who was abducted at his house in Monguno with his whereabout still unknown for over a year ago.

5. Insecurity: FCT Police commences raids on abandoned structures, untended bushes

The FCT Police Command on Wednesday commenced raids on untended bushes and abandoned structures within the city centre and suburbs as part of its intelligence-led gathering measures.

This is as it debunked insinuations that some kidnappers had infiltrated the city and maintained a hideout from where to launch attacks.

According to the Command, “We have only just begun. Members of the public will witness heavy visibility policing and an in-out sweep of the Territory.

It said, “While at that, we urge the good people of the Territory to be well informed, exercise calm, bearing in mind that it is the Police at work, to eschew the promulgation of panic erupting news with misplaced facts such as witnessed in a trending video purporting kidnappers hideout in the territory.

While calling on residents to support the police with useful information, the Command said, “All arrested persons during the raids will be screened and profiled while erring parties will be charged to court.”

7. APC won’t be satisfied with only 25% of South East votes – Adamu

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has told its leaders in the South-East that it will not be satisfied with 25 percent votes from the region.

Its National Chairman Senator Abdullahi Adamu gave the charge on Wednesday night at the national secretariat of the party while inaugurating an eight-man Abia Reconciliation Committee led by Senator Chris Adighije.

Using the Abia State crisis as a point of reference, the chairman charged all the leaders in the zone to rise above differences and work for the victory of the party in the region in 2023.

8. ‘Tinubu has capacity to fix Nigeria’

Legal practitioners under the aegis of Lawyers Network for Bola Ahmed Tinubu (LANBAT) have said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has the capacity to address challenges confronting Nigeria.

Speaking during an awareness walk in Lagos on Wednesday, the co-convener of LANBAT, Dotun Ajulo, said the group is determined to sensitise the people on the reason why Tinubu should be the next president in 2023.

Ajulo explained the group is supporting Tinubu because of his antecedents and belief in the unity of Nigeria.

9. Police warn against jungle justice as officers save Lagos family from mob

The Lagos State Police Command has again warned residents to stop jungle justice.

Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin narrated the ordeal of a family on Wednesday.

The PRO said on Eko Bridge, four adults (including one grandmother) were beaten after they were suspected of being kidnappers.

A mob descended on the quartet because they had with them in their vehicle 12 children – between seven months and 12 years old.

Hundeyin noted that police officers from Ebute-Ero Division and the RRS rescued the adults from lynching.

10. 17-year-old student allegedly commits suicide over failure to pass promotional exam in Kwara

A 27-year-old student of Offa Grammar School, Offa Local Government Area of Kwara State, Adegoke Adeyemi, has reportedly committed suicide as a result of his failure to pass his promotion examination from SS1 to SS2.

Adegoke, who was found hanging on a tree, was asked to repeat the class, according to the state Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Okasanmi Ajayi, who confirmed the development in a statement in Ilorin on Wednesday night.

He said the corpse of the deceased student was removed from a tree behind Ariya Garden Hotel, Offa, by a team of policemen from the Divisional Police Headquarters, Offa, at about 15.34hours on Tuesday.

The corpse was taken to the Offa General Hospital for autopsy, while an investigation has been launched into the matter.
