1. Nigeria’s malaria prevalence drops to 22% — Report
The 2021 Nigeria Malaria Indicator Survey Report has shown that the malaria prevalence in the country has decreased from 23 per cent in 2018 to 22 per cent in 2021.
The NMIS report also showed that malaria prevalence is highest among children aged 48 to 59 months and the prevalence is highest in the northwest at 51.6 per cent.
These findings were disclosed on Wednesday in Abuja at the official launch of the NMIS report and the National Advocacy, Communication, and Strategy and Implementation Guide.
The PUNCH reports that malaria is still a major public health challenge in Nigeria despite substantial efforts to reduce the prevalence and impact of the disease.
2. Student sent to prison over Aisha Buhari tweet
A student of the Federal University, Dutse Jigawa, Aminu Mohammed, has been sent to the Suleja Correctional Centre in Niger State after tweeting about the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari.
The student was arraigned at the FCT High Court No. 14 in Abuja on Tuesday for cyber stalking where he was denied bail despite pleading not guilty to the charges filed against him.
Mohammed was allegedly arrested on the orders of the First Lady a few days ago sparking outrage by Nigerians with many calling for his release.
Mohammed had in June tweeted in Hausa that the First Lady was feeding fat on the poor people’s money.
3. Federal borrowing should be strictly for production – Obi
The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has explained his consumption to production theory, which is the punchline for his presidential campaign.
In a statement made available to The PUNCH on Wednesday, Obi said federal borrowing for consumption must stop and be channeled into regenerative projects adding that if elected, his administration would reduce the cost of governance in the country.
He further added that the country must look beyond oil and look forward to growth-enabling entrepreneurship by expanding physical infrastructure through market-driven reforms.
Obi said, “We therefore intend to leapfrog Nigeria from oil to the Fourth Industrial Revolution by expanding physical infrastructure through market-driven reforms that will unleash growth-enabling entrepreneurship and market-creating innovations.

4. ISIS leader killed in battle
Leader of Islamic State, Abu al-Hassan al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi has been killed in a recent special forces operation.
The terrorist group media affiliate al-Furqan made this known in an audio recording by an ISIS spokesman announcing, according to CNN on Wednesday.
Vanguard learnt that the deceased leader was appointed in March this year following the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi in a military operation in the northwest of Syria.
“I announce and mourn for the Islamic State and the fighters of almighty Islamic State, (the absence) of the Amir of believers and the Calipha of the Muslims Abu al-Hasan al-Hashmi al-Qurayshi…he was killed while struggling against the enemies’ of God,” spokesman Abu Omar al-Muhajer said.
5. Stock market rebounds, gains N184bn
The stock market rebounded on Wednesday as market capitalisation gained N184 billion or 0.71 per cent to close N25.959 trillion compared with N25.775 trillion on Tuesday.
Also, the All-Share Index (ASI) rose by 337.07 points or 0.71 per cent to stand at 47,660.04 from 47,322.97 posted at the previous session.
The primary drivers of the recovery were gains in stocks of Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Holding Company and MTN Nigeria.
As a result, the year-to-date (YTD) return rose to 11.57 per cent.
6. Fashola advocates use of geospatial intelligence to fight insurgency
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has called for the use of geospatial data by the military and other security agencies in the fight against insurgency in the country.
The Surveyor General of the Federation (SGoF), Mr. Abuduganiyu Adebomehin also tasked the military to fully deploy the already collated data by his office to track and monitor criminals from position of strength of its operatives.
The duo made this charge during the 2022 Survey Coordination Conference and Meeting of the Advisory Board on Survey Training tagged; ‘Geospatal Intelligence for National Security’ held at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State on Wednesday.
Fashola, who was represented by Head of Department, Nigerian Cadastral, Coker Robert, noted that the office of the Surveyor General of the Federation (SGoF) is assigned to provide data of geospatial intelligence.

7. Court affirms Ayade as APC Cross River north senatorial candidate
AFederal High Court in Abuja has affirmed Governor Ben Ayade as the All Progressives Congress(APC) senatorial candidate for Cross River North.
The Court presided by Justice Nkeonye Evelyn Maha dismissed a suit filed by Cecilia Odey against the Governor.
Cecilia of the APC participated in the May 28th Cross River State Northern Senatorial District primaries of APC with a zero vote score to Martins Orim who won.
She later filed a suit challenging the fresh primaries that the APC conducted on the 14th of July 2022 following the voluntary withdrawal of Martins Orim for Ayade in pursuant to S. 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022.
8. No plan to hike petrol price – NMDPRA
Amid worsening scarcity and speculations about possible pump price increase of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol, the Nigerian Midstream Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has said the Federal Government has no intention to hike the price in the yuletide period.
It noted that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has a stock of the product that could last 34 days.
While advising marketers to shun the diversion of the product, it urged consumers to desist from panic buying.

9. Gov. Ugwuanyi has given Police robust support to discharge its duties in Enugu – AIG
The new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 13, AIG Abutu Yaro, has expressed satisfaction with the robust support the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in Enugu State, since its inception in 2015, has given to the state command of the Nigerian Police Force to effectively discharge its duties in the State.
AIG Yaro also applauded Governor Ugwuanyi for the remarkable efforts of his administration in enhancing the security architecture of Enugu State through community policing mechanisms such as the formation and operation of the Neighbourhood Watch and Forest Guard, stressing that they are “very functional and effective.”
Speaking when he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Ugwuanyi at the Government House, Enugu, on Wednesday, the new AIG, who oversees the functions of all the police formations in Enugu and Anambra states, disclosed that the existing security architecture in Enugu State is exciting and worthy of emulation.
10. Senate okays N607.9bn for FCTA 2022 budget
Nearly a month to the end of the year, the Senate on Wednesday approved N607.952 billion budget for the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, for the 2022 fiscal year.
A breakdown of the budget showed that the sum of N76,565,904,857 is for personnel costs and N138,199,851,110 is for overhead costs while the balance of N393,182,267,614 is earmarked for capital expenditure.
The Senate approved the FCT budget following the consideration of the report of its Committee on FCT, chaired by Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC, Kogi West).
Addressing newsmen shortly after the passage of the Appropriation Bill for President Muhammadu Buhari’s assent, Senator Adeyemi listed some critical areas that the new budget seeks to address in the capital territory.
