1. FG apologises over civilians killed in Zamfara airstrike

The Federal Government, on Wednesday, apologised over the death of about 64 persons reportedly killed in an airstrike by the Nigerian military on Sunday in Mutumji Community, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The PUNCH reports that although some armed militants were killed, locals, including women and children, also died from the air raid meant to chase terrorists who reportedly invaded the town.

The Nigerian Air Force was responding to distress calls on Saturday and Sunday from locals following armed bandits’ attack on Malele, Ruwan Tofa, and Yan-Awake communities in the area.

According to residents, the strike foiled the attack on the three neighbouring communities, forcing the terrorists to flee into the neighbouring Mutumji community.

2. APC launches youth campaign council

The All Progressives Congress National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, has announced the launch of the APC National Youth Wing Campaign Council.

The council will help in the implementation of strategies and tactics developed to give the APC total and youth-driven victory in the 2023 general election.

In a terse statement on Wednesday, Israel said the formation of the council followed due consultation with the national leadership of the APC and other critical stakeholders, including the zonal youth leaders, state youth leaders, among others.

He said, “Importantly, it is a fulfilment of my obligation as the APC National Youth Leader and the head of its youth wing. Indeed, Article 14.22 of the party’s constitution clearly entrusts the mobilisation of the youth for the attainment of party objectives, including electoral victory, to the NYL.

3. Gunshots, injuries as Ogun transport union members clash

Rival transport union members clashed in Itori, Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State, with the situation leaving several people injured.

Our correspondent gathered that the violence occurred on Tuesday in the presence of the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, who was at the ‘Itori Day’, an annual festival organised by the Olu of Itori, Oba Fatai Akamo.

It was further gathered that leaders of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria and their counterparts in the Ogun State Park Management, attacked one another, firing gunshots.

It was reported that some of the union leaders sustained serious bullet and machete injuries, with the crisis disrupting the festival for hours.

4. FG approves Group Life Assurance for Nigeria Police

The Federal Government has approved the sum of N13,321,742,038.83 for Group Life Assurance for the 318,319 officers and men of the Nigeria Police.

This is as the Federal Executive Council, FEC, yesterday, approved an aggregate of N273,933,143,027 for various contracts cutting across the ministries of Works and Housing, Environment, Transportation and Police Affairs.

This was disclosed to State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Council meeting, presided over over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa Abuja.

The Minister of Police of Affairs, Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, told journalists that the import of the memorandum that conveyed the request to FEC was to keep the Police motivated and encouraged.

5. 2023: APC ‘ll win all elections fairly, squarely, Buhari boasts

President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed optimism that the App Progressives Congress, APC, will win all positions fairly and squarely in the 2023 general elections.

The President also assured the ruling APC and its candidates in the elections next year that he is ready at all times to campaign for the presidential candidate and all party candidates with “full energy and conviction.”

This assurance according to the statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu is to dispel expressed concerns in certain quarters that the President has not featured in campaigns since the national launch in Jos, Plateau State and to stress that while he remains committed to party politics, the functions and duties of the President will equally be upheld at times.

Speaking to the Nigerian community in Washington DC in the course of his recent visit to the United States, President Buhari had stressed what he said all the time that he is ready to campaign for the party’s victory in the general elections next year.

6. Attacks on INEC offices: Invite PDP leaders for questioning, APC charges security agencies

Following the consistent attacks on offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and claims by the Peoples Democratic Party PDP that some ruling party officials were bent on derailing the 2023 general election, the ruling All Progressives Congress APC has asked security agencies to invite PDP leaders for questioning.

According to the APC, PDP must be made to back up its claims because it takes a thief to catch a thief.

Minister of State, Labour and Employment and Chief Spokesperson of the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council PCC, Mr Festus Keyamo SAN gave the charge in a statement on Wednesday.

7. Eastern railway corridor won’t be ready by May, says Fed Govt

The Federal Government on Wednesday said the earlier promise to deliver the $1.96 billion Eastern rail corridor by May 2023 is no longer feasible.

It cited paucity of funding as reason.

Minister of Transportation, Muazu Sambo, said this while responding to media queries at the end of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

He said the 85 per cent counterpart funding from the Chinese engineering company was not yet available.

8. Second Niger Bridge users to pay toll, says Fed Govt

Motorists will pay toll on the Second Niger Bridge in due course, the Federal Government said on Wednesday.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola (SAN) said the bridge, in the meantime, has been opened to ease movement during the Yuletide.

The minister said the road will remain open till January 1 for inward travelers, and for those on outward journey from January 2 to 15.

Thereafter, it will be shut again.

9. Osinbajo visits Tinubu in Abuja

The Vice president, Yemi Osinbajo on Wednesday, visited All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu at his Abuja residence.

The APC vice presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima, was present during the meeting.

Osinbajo’s media aide, Laolu Akande, disclosed this while tweeting some still pictures captured during the meeting.

He wrote, “Vice President Yemi Osinbajo stopped by for a friendly visit at the Abuja residence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu just now.”

10. Champions League: It is the trophy I must win – Guardiola admits
