1. EFCC restates commitment to tackling electoral fraud

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawaz on Wednesday reiterated the anti-graft agency’s resolve to ensure free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria, by tackling all forms of electoral fraud.

The EFCC boss stated this in Abuja while speaking at an interfaith peace summit organized by the Nigerian Television Authority’s Abrahamic Mission in collaboration with the Al-habibiyah organisation, with the theme ‘Prosecuting Peaceful Election; Role of Faith Communities’.

The EFCC boss who spoke through his representative, an assistant commander and assistant director, Media and Publicity Unit of the agency, Dele Oyewale, noted that the commission was determined to ensure the integrity of the electoral process by tackling all forms of electoral fraud including vote buying, vote selling, monetisation and other things that might affect the integrity of the electoral process.

He said, “As an anti-corruption agency, the EFCC is equipped to ensure that every necessary process, rule and regulation of the elections are complied with. For us to ensure peace, we must ensure that there is no manipulation, there is nothing that will trigger any form of violence. To this end, any form of electoral irregularity, malpractice, compromise of the electoral process would be tackled.

2. ICPC arrests Twitter user selling new naira notes

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, on Wednesday, arrested an Abuja-based Twitter user, Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin, with the handle @SimisolaGold and Twitter name Simisola of Lala, for offering new naira notes for sale on social media, The PUNCH reports.

Our correspondent gathered that, although Omoseyin was yet to mention other members of the syndicate, she was cooperating with investigation.

The arrest was as a result of intelligence received which led the ICPC officials to seek out and promptly arrest the suspect.

The spokesperson for the anti-graft agency, Mrs. Azuka Ogugua, revealed in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday night.

3. Kwankwaso didn’t meet, discuss with Atiku — NNPP PCC

The New Nigeria Peoples Party says its presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has neither met nor discussed with his Peoples Democratic Party counterpart, Atiku Abubakar, or his representatives, on any working relationship towards 2023 presidential election.

The spokesperson, Kwankwaso/NNPP Presidential Campaign Council, Ladipo Johnson, disclosed this in a statement he issued on Wednesday in Abuja.

Johnson said that it was apparent that Kwankwaso was finishing the race stronger than other presidential candidates, especially Atiku.

He said this was clear as Abubakar seemed to be “gasping for air as his platform crumbles and is seeking a solid branch to hold on!”

4. Fuel scarcity: ACF backs removal of subsidy

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has said that the best way for the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)to make fuel readily available to Nigerians is for the subsidy to be completely removed.

Secretary-General of the ACF, Murtala Aliyu said in an interview said, frowning at the idea of borrowing money to pay for subsidies, saying the government has been shying away from the issue of subsidy and that was where the problem resides.

“For as long as we continue to import fuel, we have to  subsidize it and  doing so, will certainly  make government resources continue to be limited.”

5. ‘Unknown gunmen’ destroy 729 ballot boxes, 243 voting cubicles, 256 bags in Anambra

Barely three weeks to the general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC said it’s in Idemili South Local Government Area Anambra state was on Tuesday morning attacked and set ablaze by unknown gunmen.

Among the items lost to the inferno are 729 ballot boxes, 243 voting cubicles, 256 election bags, 11 megaphones, one electric power generator and large quantities of indelible ink and liquid gum.

An INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye in a statement said the Resident Electoral Commissioner REC for Anambra State, Dr Queen Elizabeth Agwu, had reported the incident.

According to him, the building was substantially damaged, as all furniture and other items were destroyed, including non-sensitive materials recently delivered in readiness for the 2023 General Election.

6. We won’t extend UTME registration deadline, JAMB warns

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it would not extend deadline for the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) registration.

According to NAN, Ishaq Oloyede, JAMB registrar, gave the warning after monitoring the registration exercise in Kano state on Wednesday.

Registration for this year’s UTME started on January 14 and is scheduled to end on February 14.

The exam is billed to commence on April 29 and end on May 12.

Speaking on the registration exercise, Oloyede said JAMB’s target for the year is to register 1.8 million candidates.
