1. Boko Haram designed to destroy Nigeria — Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Wednesday, described the Boko Haram group and its attendant ideology — which abhors Western education — as a “fraudulent plot” designed to “destroy Nigeria.”

Buhari’s comments come barely 48 hours after he alleged a “deliberate plot” to destroy the country, which failed.

Officially known as Jamā’at Ahl as-Sunnah lid-Da’wah wa’l-Jihād, the Boko Haram sect is an Islamic terrorist organisation that has troubled Nigeria’s north with targeted bombings and offensives since 2009.

Boko Haram, literally translating to “Western Education is forbidden” discourages involvement in any form of secularism, including secular education.

2. Why kidnappers didn’t torture me – Abducted colonel

A retired Colonel, Rabiu Garba Yandoto, who was abducted by bandits along Gusau-Tsafe road and released last Tuesday after payment of N10 million ransom said his abduction was a blessing to Nigeria.

Addressing journalists in Gusau on Wednesday, Yandoto said his abduction was going to be a blessing to the country in general and Zamfara state in particular going by his encounter with some bandit leaders declared wanted by the military.

“I am telling you, my abduction would be a blessing to Zamfara state and the country in general. All those wanted bandits especially the ones that are listed by the Chief of Defence staff had a meeting with me in the forest where I was held captive.

3. Baby rescued from mentally challenged mum in Osun

A two-year old boy has been rescued from a mentally challenged lady suspected to be his mother in the Okinni area of Osun State.

The boy, called John Mary, was reportedly rescued from his mother on the Osogbo-Ilobu road by two persons whose identities were not disclosed.

A release signed by the Information Officer, Osun State Ministry of Women Affairs, Aminat Adebare, obtained in Osogbo on Wednesday, further said those that rescued the boy took him to Jaleyemi Hospital Motherless Baby Home, Osogbo, and thereafter notified the police.

4. 2023: Enugu APC stakeholders boycott Tinubu’s really in Enugu

The All Progressives Congress, APC, stakeholders in Enugu State on Wednesday boycotted Presidential campaign rally of Ahmed Bola Tinubu in Enugu State.

Vanguard reports that APC Presidential candidate, Tinubu was in Enugu where he addressed a rally at the Michael Okpara Square.

Major leaders of the party in the State, including foreign affairs minister, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, former Senate President, Senator Ken Nnamani, former Enugu Governor, Barr. Sullivan Chime, former Speaker, Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Eugene Odoh, former Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, among others stayed away from the event.

Also absent were the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Osita Okechukwu, the immediate past chairman of the Party in the State, Barr. Ben Nwoye and a presidential aide, Barr. Mrs. Juliet Ibekaku.

5. COVID-19: Fresh concerns as new ‘Kraken variant’ emerges

The emergence of a new COVID-19 variant known as XBB.1.5 has raised fresh concerns over what may become a potentially deadly new wave of the pandemic.

Nicknamed the  “Kraken variant”, because of its ability to spread rapidly, the new variant is reputed to be the most transmissible sub-variant detected so far, even as the World Health Organisation, WHO announced an increase in cases of an Omicron sub-variant across numerous countries.

According to the WHO, the XBB.1.5 variant has already been identified in at least 30 countries including China and South Africa and is now dominant in the United States of America.

But in a statement, the  Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, assured that there was no need to panic over the ‘Kraken’ Covid-19 variant.

6. Presidency: We’re behind you, Anambra Monarchs assure Obi

Traditional Rulers in Anambra State have thrown their weight behind the presidential aspiration of the candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.

Responding after the LP candidate addressed them at the Government House, Awka ahead of his campaign in Anambra State, the Monarchs said although they are not politicians, they too want good things for their subjects.

Responding on behalf of the traditional rulers, Igwe of Okpuno, Sunday Okafor prayed God to help Obi realize his ambition as the president of Nigeria.

7. Jigawa APC gov ticket: Supreme Court to deliver judgment on Friday

The Supreme Court is to deliver judgment on Friday in the legal battle on the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Jigawa.

A five-member panel of Justices led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun fixed the date for judgment after taking arguments from parties in the appeal filed by Farouk Adamu Aliyu former Minority Leaders of the House of Representatives and the cross appeal by Umar Namadi the current Deputy Governor of the state.

Umar Namadi through his counsel,  Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, had won the legal battle at the Federal High Court in Dutse as well as at the Court of Appeal in Kano.

But Aliyu is by his appeal marked: SC/1453/2022 challenging the Nov.4, 2022 judgment by the Court of Appeal (Kano division) which dismissed his earlier appeal and upheld Namadi’s election as the governorship candidate of the APC in Jigawa State.

8. Buhari vows to improve security, reposition economy before leaving office

President Muhammadu Buhari says the gains recorded in security will be further consolidated and more attention will be given to the economy, before handing over on May 29.

The president stated this when he received the Executive members of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday.

President Buhari noted that the security situation had improved over the years, particularly in the North East where the focus had shifted to rebuilding infrastructure and re-orientation on education.

9. Ogun 2023: PRP replaces guber candidate four months after death

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has unveiled Cyrus Oluwaseun Johnson as the new governorship candidate of the party in Ogun State.

This is coming barely four months after its former candidate, Prof. David Bamgbose died.

DAILY POST recalls that Bamgbose, an educationist, died after a brief illness in September 2022, seven days from the day he was unveiled as the PRP candidate.

However, the State Chairman of the PRP, Samson Okusanya, on Wednesday, unveiled Johnson as the new candidate to replace Bamgbose

10. Defamation: Gov Emmanuel’s aide insists Senator Akpan was bailed on health grounds

The Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Media, Richard Peters has refused to retract a statement credited to him that Senator Bassey Akpan, the Akwa Ibom governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party, YPP was released from incarceration on health grounds.

Peters during a live TV interview had claimed that Senator Akpan, popularly known as OBA, was granted bail because of his mental health which was in jeopardy at the Ikot Ekpene Correctional centre.

But, a group from the Senator’s local government under the aegis of ”Concerned Ibiono Ibom Youths’ irked by the comment, mandated Peters to retract the statement and tender apology to the Senator within 72 hours or risk legal action.

The youths in a statement that was copied to the Commissioner of Police, said Peters’ position diminished the image of the Senator who is their son before the right thinking members of the public even as they vowed to take appropriate actions if he refuses.
