1. Obi visits Gombe, says new Nigeria possible

The presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, has expressed optimism to build a new Nigeria, noting that other political parties are built on corruption.

Obi said this on Wednesday, when his presidential campaign council arrived Pantami stadium in Gombe State, to solicit for votes, noting that the solution was in Labour Party.

Our correspondent reports that Obi earlier met with Gombe women at the International Hotel Conference hall where he sought for their support, stressing that they should use their Permanent Voter Cards to bring the right change to the country.

2. Abia: Ikonne’s death terminates deputy gov’s candidacy —Lawyer

Human rights lawyer and principal of Festus Ogun Legal, Festus Ogun, has said the death of the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abia State, Prof. Eleazar Uche Ikonne, has automatically terminated the candidacy of his running mate as the deputy governorship candidate of the PDP in the state.

Ogun, who sent his condolences to the family of the late Ikonne on Wednesday evening, explained the legal implications of the death of the PDP governorship hopeful in the state.

He stated that Ikonne’s death implied that the PDP, upon notifying INEC and within 14 days, should conduct a fresh governorship primary in Abia State in accordance with its Constitution and the Electoral Act wherein a new governorship candidate will emerge.

3. Explosion rocks Nasarawa community, kills 27

No fewer than 27 Fulani pastoralists have been killed after a bomb exploded on Tuesday night at the border linking Nasarawa and Benue states in Doma Local Government Area of Nasarawa state.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ramhan Nansel, made the disclosure to our correspondent in Lafia on Wednesday.

He narrated that the sad incident occured in the Rukubi community of Doma LGA on Tuesday.

4. Presidency denies Yakasai’s claim on Buhari’s support for Tinubu

The presidency on Wednesday advised Nigerians not to take elder statesman, Tanko Yakasai, seriously on his claim questioning the loyalty of President Muhammadu Buhari to the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.  

The Presidency in a  statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said the Kano State politician made the claim in a recent television interview.

According to the statement, Yakasai is alien to the ruling party and could not have spoken from the APC’s point of view.

5. Why Nigeria must establish Medical Research Council now – Salako

THE Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Institute of Medical Research,NIMR, Prof. Babatunde Salako,has advised the federal government to as a matter of urgency, establish a Medical Research Council for the country as obtainable in the United States of America and the United Kingdom.

He said establishment of the health research funding body would give Nigeria opportunity  to provide local solutions through funding of peculiar health challenges in the country.

Salako,who said  most modern successful countries have functional research and development anchored by a health research funding agency, insisted that it was time for Nigeria to have a strong health research funding body too.

He said the reason the health indices in the country were poor was because of inadequate funding for health research and for the health system itself.

6. Atiku-Okowa ticket best for Nigeria – Ereyitom

The Member Representing Warri Federal Constituency at the Federal House of Representatives and Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP for Warri Federal constituency in the forthcoming February 25, 2023, Presidential and National Assembly election, Hon. Chief Dr. Thomas Ereyitomi JP has described the PDP Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and his running mate Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa’s ticket as the best for Nigeria

Ereyitomi made the declaration in Asaba during the campaign rally of the PDP, he reiterated the PDP’s resolve to rescue Nigeria from the ruling party at the centre and reset the country into a more prosperous nation.

The Warri Federal Rep Member noted that with the massive transformation and development agenda of Governor Okowa as well as the 2023 Vice presidential candidate, Delta is fully for PDP, Ereyitomi appealed to all eligible voters in Warri federal constituency, Delta State, and Nigeria at large to make sure they vote for PDP candidates from presidential candidate to governorship, Senatorial, House of Reps, House of Assembly and other elective future positions.

7. Amotekun raises the alarm over missing passengers in Ondo

Ondo State Security Network codenamed Amotekun Corps has raised the alarm over how members of the public who boarded commercial mototcyles as well as cabs got missing during the day.

It warned residents in the State to stop boarding motorcycles (Okada) without SITA registration number as well as avoid riders with hooded faces to ascertain their safety.

Commander Ondo Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, who doubles as the Special Adviser to Governor Akeredolu on Security Matters, said many persons have fallen victims of the dastardly acts.

He said they were working on breaking the sydicate but that the public should stop boarding any Okada that does not wear SITA registration and without commercial registration number plate.

8. Driver, motor boy bag 10 years for drug trafficking

The Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a bus driver, Ifeanyi Okorie and his motor boy, Israel Nwachukwu to 10 years imprisonment each for drug trafficking.

Justice Akintayo Aluko convicted Okorie, 39, and Nwachukwu, 23, following their plea of guilty to conspiracy and unlawful transportation of 564.55 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa also known as Marijuana

The duo was prosecuted by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Prosecution counsel N. J. Mamza told the court that the men were arrested on December 11, 2022, at the 2nd Toll Gate, Opposite V.G.C. Estate, Lekki, Lagos, while illegally transporting the prohibited leaves
