1. AIG seeks more hands to fight insecurity

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Force Intelligent Bureau, Habu Sani, has cried out for the need to recruit more people into the Nigeria Police Force to effectively police the ever-increasing insecurity in the country.

He made this call on Wednesday in Minna, while representing the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba, during the Passing out Parade of the 2020 recruit constables.

He said there seemed to be no end to the issue of insecurity in the country adding that the police were overwhelmed.

He urged parents to encourage their children to join the police force to help control armed banditry, Boko-Haram, and other gunmen.

“It is important for parents and guardians to encourage their wards to apply for and join the NPF, doing so has become necessary because of the dimension of Nigeria’s security concerns and the need to guarantee credible policing,” he said.

2. UK, US warn residents against travel near Kuje prison, 19 states

The United States Embassy has warned its citizens in Nigeria against travelling on the airport road in Abuja.

The warning came after suspected terrorists attacked Kuje prison and freed inmates on Tuesday.

Also, United Kingdom citizens were warned not to be cautious of travelling to 19 states in Nigeria.

Among the states are Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara and riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River.

They were advised to only embark on essential travel to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa , Niger, Sokoto, Kogi, within 20km of the border with Niger in Kebbi State, Abia and non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Plateau, and Taraba.

In a statement on Wednesday, titled, ‘Abuja FCT prison break near the airport on July 5, 2022’, the US Embassy noted that crime has become endemic throughout Nigeria.

3. Running mate: APC chieftains seek Masari’s retention

A Federal High Court in Abuja has been asked to stop the All Progressives Congress from replacing Alhaji Kabiru Masari as the running mate to its presidential candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The PUNCH reported that shortly after Tinubu emerged as the presidential candidate of the APC, Masari’s name was submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission as an interim vice presidential candidate popularly called Placeholder.

However, two chieftains of the APC, who were delegates at the party’s primary and convention, Zakari Maigari and Zubainatu Mohammed, approached the court to stop INEC from accepting a change of the vice-presidential candidate from the APC.

The APC, INEC, Tinubu, and Kabiru Masari were joined as defendants in the suit marked FHC/ABJ CS/1059/2022 and dated July 4, 2022.

4. I haven’t picked Funke Akindele as deputy, says Jandor, Lagos PDP gov candidate

The governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos State, Dr. Olajide Adediran, popularly called Jandor, has dismissed speculations making the rounds that Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, popularly known and called ‘Jenifa’, has been chosen as his deputy in the 2023 polls.

Jandor made the clarification following trending report on social media on Wednesday, claiming that he had finally settled for Akindele as his Deputy.

When contacted for clarification, Jandor simply dismissed the report, saying “I haven’t chosen nor announced Funke Akindele as my running mate.

“However, that stage will come in due course when an official public announcement will be made.”

5. Osun Gov’ship debate: Amotekun not a political tool – Oyetola

Responding to the issue of insecurity, Governor Oyetola said, “Amotekun is a novel creation to take care of issues of kidnapping, illegal mining and cultism. Though, presently, they cannot bear arm, which is a major challenge.”

“I do not subscribe to individuals carrying gun, but I believe the constitution should be amended to accommodate state police before proceeding to individuals carrying guns”.

Also, in his view, Mr Lasun agreed that Amotekun is doing well and its existence does not threaten his living in Osun.

“But I believe the police need to be decentralise to allow for state police while the state is yet to nature for people to wield weapons”

6. After Kastina attack, NAF jet kill scores of terrorists near Zakka/Umadan, Mahata villages

The Nigerian military in carefully coordinated air and ground operations involving the Air Component of Operation Hadarin Daji and elements of the Nigerian Police have eliminated scores of terrorists near Zakka and Umadan Villages in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State.

Military sources onnfirmed that the air strikes and ground operation were activated after terrorists ambushed the advanced convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina as well as the killing of the Area Commander on Dusinma also in Katsina state on Tuesday.

‘While on an air surveillance mission, intelligence was received by the air crew of the sighting of terrorists between Zakka and Umadan Villages”, the source said..

He disclosed that the terrorists had earlier overwhelmed the Police Outpost at Zakka Village after overrunning the Police Outstation at Dutsen Ma and shooting the Police Area Commander.

7. FEC approves N22.45bn for Petroleum, Environment ministries

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N22,449,250,040 billion for contracts in the ministries of Petroleum Resources and Environment.

This was disclosed to State House Correspondents after the weekly virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Addressing correspondents at the briefing, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, said Council approved the sum of N22 billion for the construction of a conference hostel facility for the Nigeria Content Development and Monitoring Board in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

According to him: “The Federal Executive Council today approved the award of contract procurement for the provision of a conference hostel facility in Yenegoa, adjacent the Nigerian Content Towers for the sum of N22 billion and it is to be constructed in 24 months.”

Giving updates on the rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries, Sylva said the Port-Harcourt Refinery would soon become operational adding that the Dangote Refinery would commence operation by January next year.

8. Late OPEC chief Barkindo buried in Yola

The late Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), Muhammad Barkindo, has been laid to rest in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

Barkindo was buried in Yola Town, Yola South Local Government Area on Wednesday evening after he was flown in the afternoon.

Adamawa Emirate paramount ruler, the Lamido Adamawa, Dr Muhammadu Barkindo Mustafa; FCT Minister Muhammad Musa Bello; Secretary to the Adamawa State Government (SSG), Malam Bashiru Ahmad, among other dignitaries, attended Barkindo’s funeral prayers.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri who is outside the country, sent his condolences via his Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou.

9. Gas explosion destroys goods worth millions of naira in Ilorin

Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed in a fire disaster triggered by a gas explosion on Tuesday in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

According to the spokesman of the state fire service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, in Ilorin on Wednesday, the fire disaster was caused by an accidental discharge from a damaged hose which suddenly burst during the gas delivery process at a gas retail shop.

The incident occurred at about 16.38hours at Mayegun Junction, Alagbado Specialist Hospital area of Ilorin metropolis.

Firefighters were, however, able to bring the fire under control within record time.

At least seven container shops were affected in the fire incident, while one person was injured.

10. Kuje prison break: Fish out all escapees – FCT minister orders traditional rulers

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, on Wednesday in Abuja, tasked traditional rulers in Kuje Area Council to work with relevant security operatives to fish out all escapees from the Kuje Prison.

Bello gave the directive during an on-the-spot assessment of damage following the attack at the Kuje Medium Correctional Facility by suspected terrorists, which led to the escape of many inmates.

He also urged the Gomo of Kuje, Haruna Jibrin, to summon all traditional chiefs in the council to combine intelligence with security agencies to fish out the escaped inmates from the community.

Similarly, the minister also called on members of the communities to provide appropriate intelligence to the security agencies to enable them to do their work.
