1. Obaseki approves N1.87bn for construction of military operating base in Ehor

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the sum of N1.87 billion for the construction of a forward operating base for the Nigerian Army in Ehor, the Uhunmwode Local Government Area, and other projects in the state.

The State Commissioner for Orientation and Communication, Andrew Emwanta, disclosed this after the weekly Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Obaseki at the Government House, Benin City.

Emwanta said the governor also approved the development of a detailed masterplan for a new town layout in Ward 9, Ikpoba-Okha, and the sustenance of the ‘Operation Light Up Edo Project’ as well as the extension of the Ossiomo Independent Power Project to some strategic public utilities.

He said the preparation of the detailed masterplan for a new town layout would include the design of roads and other infrastructure; the ‘Operation Light Up Edo Project’ would ensure the lightening of more street lights across the state, while the extension of power will cover three public facilities including the Government Science and Technical College, the Edo State Ministry of Education in Iyaro, and the Edo Broadcasting Service at Aduwawa.

2. PDP relies on Dubai connection, hackers for 2023 elections, Ex-APC spokesman alleges

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, Yekini Nabena, on Wednesday vowed that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party cannot win the 2023 election unless it deploys hackers to manipulate the servers of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

This is even as the Bayelsa-born politician accused the presidential flagbearer of banking on his Dubai connections and ‘Hushpuppi’ strategies ahead of the February 25 elections.

Nabena, who made the statement during a briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, told newsmen that the ruling party does not see the opposition party as a threat.

“PDP is nothing to talk about as far as the 2023 general election is concerned, although we are watching them keenly based on their past records because we already know their plans and what they are banking on are their Dubai connections and Hushpuppi strategies,” he said.

3. Why Nigerians shouldn’t vote based on ethnicity, religion – Actor Charles Inojie

Nollywood actor, Charles Inojie, has noted that Nigerians should not vote based on ethnicity or religion.

The actor, famous for his role in The Johnsons family drama, noted that voting based on religion or ethnicity was a thing of the past.

He said this while reacting to a viral video by the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, who spoke about the ‘Obidient’ movement.

In the video, Obaseki noted that Nigerians were no longer interested in the leadership of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party but are now part of the ‘Obidient’ movement.

The ‘Obidient’ movement refers to the supporters of the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Reacting to the statement, Inojie noted that the movement is getting more attention.

He then advised Nigerians not to vote based on ethnicity, adding that the hometowns of past presidents did not get better when they were in power.

4. NUT rejects sack of 2,357 teachers in Kaduna,threatens strike over Gov el-Rufai’s action

THE national leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers,NUT,has rejected Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s sacking of its 2,357 of its members members in Kaduna State. It demanded immediate reversal of the action.

It alleged that the whole concept of competency test which the Kaduna State Government relied on to sack 2,357 teachers in the state last week was “designed to achieve its inglorious aim of casualization of the teaching profession in Kaduna State.”

The National Executive Council,NEC,of the union,at a news conference in Abuja, Wednesday,threatened to declare strike across the country in solidarity with teachers in Kaduna if the state government fail to act açcording to the demand.

Recall that the Kaduna State Government,last weekend announced the sack of 2,357 including the National President of NUT,Comrade Audu Titus Amba, allegedly for failing competency and failing to appear for the test.

5. Gunmen abduct retired top civil servant in Ekiti

A retired Chief Pharmacist with the Ekiti Ministry of Health, Mr Israel Bamisaye, was on Wednesday kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

Bamisaye was said to have been kidnapped in his farm located between Ero Dam and the Ekiti State farm settlement  at Orin Ekiti, Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State, by some unknown gunmen whose number was put at seven

Multiple sources told journalists via telephone conversation that the retiree was kidnapped around 4pm while working on his farm.

The development was said to have generated tension and panick in the town, with residents trooping out to raise doubt about their safety.

6. 2023: We need Igbo votes to win presidential election- South East group tells APC

A group of professionals in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, under the aegis of APC Patriots, South East has cautioned the party’s hierarchy against playing cold in the region, saying that Igbo votes were need to win the presidential election in 2023.

It therefore called on the party to be proactive and work assiduously towards realizing the objective.

The group made the caution in a congratulatory message sent to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the flag bearer of the Party in the 2023 Presidential election.

Made available to Vanguard in Abuja on Wednesday, the message signed by Ikenga Dozie Ikedife, a one-time deputy governorship candidate of the APC in Anambra state on behalf of the group noted that “though it was the wish of the people of the region to have one of their own as standard bearer, the result of the presidential primaries proved otherwise.”

7. Many States would’ve gone under without bailouts – FG

The Federal Government has said many States of the Federation are still afloat because of the financial reliefs the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration gave to them.

Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed disclosed this to State House Correspondents at the end of the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided by Buhari.

According to Mohammed, although some States, especially those of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) claimed they were not gaining from the Buhari’s administration, many of them had been sustained with bailouts and lifelines from the Federal Government.

He also noted not less than 24 States, crossing party lines, had demanded and received refunds from the Federal Government for projects on federal roads and bridges, adding that records showed that the refunds ran into N477 billion.

8. Why I returned $4,050 to passenger, by Bolt driver

Mr Sunday-Francis Adedokun, a Bolt driver, has explained why he returned 4,050 dollars (about N1.6 million) belonging to a passenger.

Adedokun in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Abuja said the passenger, Mrs Tajudeen Toyin-Oke, was involved in a traffic accident and offered to take her home.

“Mr and Mrs Toyin-Oke had an accident with their car along Airport Road, at the roundabout before Gossa Market, I was driving behind them when they had the accident,” he said.

9. 60 families of deceased NSCDC personnel get N200 million life insurance benefits

Sixty families of deceased personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC), on Wednesday, received over N200 million as life insurance benefits.

Distributing the money to the beneficiaries whose families died in active service in Abuja, Commandant General of the Corps, Dr. Ahmed Audi, said the 60 families were the first tranche of life insurance benefits rolled out, promising that the agency was working to ensure that all those that are entitled to such benefits are captured and attended to accordingly.

Audi disclosed that the roll out of the tranches of beneficiary covers as early as 2004 to date and as part of the agency’s drive to make welfare of officers a priority; and that every officer gets what is due to him or her.

He said: “Today, we are celebrating our colleagues who died in the line of duty while serving meritoriously for years. Today, we recognize all the efforts they have put in while they were in service by giving their life insurances to their next of kin.

10. Senate passes Public Private Partnership Regulatory Commission Bill

The Senate on Wednesday passed the Public-Private Partnership Regulatory Commission Bill, 2022.

The Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2022, was also passed.

The passage followed the consideration and adoption of separate reports of the Committees on Works and Establishment and Public Service.

Sen. Emmanuel Orker-Jev (PDP- Benue) said the Chartered Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill sought to provide the requisite legal and institutional framework for the Institute.

It is expected to provide the necessary legal regime for the effective specialisation, standardisation and professionalism of the field of engineering in Nigeria.
