1. Abducted Kaduna Catholic priest dies in kidnappers’ den

Reverend Father Joseph Akete of the St. John Catholic Church, Kudenda in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, who was kidnapped eight weeks ago, has died in captivity.

The Chancellor, Catholic Archdiocese of Kaduna, Rev. Fr. Christian Okewu Emmanuel, disclosed this in Kaduna on Wednesday.

The PUNCH had reported that on March 8, some gunmen invaded the St. John Catholic Church, Kudenda in Chikun Local Government Area of the State and abducted the Priest, Reverend Father Joseph Akete, killing one security guard.

According to the Chancellor, the late Catholic Priest had died between April 18 and 20, 2022.

2. 2023: Orji Kalu betrayed Igbo cause, says Edwin Clark

Elder statesman and former Federal Information Commissioner, Chief Edwin Clark, has taken a former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, to the cleaners, describing him as a “traitor”.

While accusing him of betraying the Igbo cause, the nonagenarian said that although Kalu was one of the oldest vocal frontline politicians in the South-East, he doubted his sincerity and transparency.

Clark, therefore, called on southeast leaders to “sanction any of their sons or daughters trying to betray them, otherwise, your case will be jeopardized from your home.”

He said it was surprising that Kalu did not only drop his ambition to contest the 2023 presidential election but also declared his support for the presidential ambition of the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, from Yobe State in North East “on puerile and misinformed reasons that only South-East and North-East has not produced civilian Head of State in Nigeria.”

3. Extension of primaries deadline not possible, says INEC commissioner

The Independent National Electoral Commission would continue to reject requests by political parties for the extension of deadline for the conduct of their primaries because it would contravene the timetable and schedule of activities for the general elections earlier released, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Akwa Ibom State, Mike Igini, said on Wednesday.

Using the 2023 elections as a reference point, the Akwa Ibom REC said the commission had given ample time to parties to conduct their primaries based on the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 elections.

Igini who was responding to questions from journalists on why INEC was refusing the request of 18 political parties under the aegis of Inter-Party Advisory Council for changes in the electoral timetable and schedule of activities, maintained that the June 3 deadline was fixed and firm.

He said the dates were arrived at based on the provisions of Sections 76, 116,132, 178 of the constitution as well as the provision of Section 28 of the 2022 Electoral Act.

4. 2022 WASSCE: WAEC tasks supervisors on integrity

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has tasked supervisors to work with utmost dedication and integrity for successful conduct of the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The Deputy Registrar/Zonal Coordinator (Ikeja) of the council, Dr Amos Dangut, gave the advice at a workshop to brief supervisors of their roles during the conduct of the examination in Lagos on Wednesday.

Recall  that about 650 supervisors, drawn from District One in the state participated in the workshop.

According to him, the aim of the workshop is to inform and educate the supervisors on the procedures for the conduct of the examinations.

5. Organisers bring Hollywood to AMVCA 2022

As momentum gathers for the grand finale of AMVCA 2022, Africa Magic in association with Multichoice Nigeria has said via their communication channel that they would host celebrity movie stars and film directors  from Hollywood.

The awards night is Saturday, May 14.

According to them, the visiting Hollywood stars will be led by Tasha Smith, an actress, director and producer known for her role in the acclaimed film ‘Why Did I Get Married?’  and its sequel, ‘Why Did I Get Married, Too?’.

She will be joined by Bayo Akinfemi, a cast member of the popular television series, ‘Bob Hearts Abishola’, as well as Brandon Micheal Hall of the ‘God, Friended Me’ series fame.

6. Kidnapped Catholic Priest killed in captivity — CAN laments

Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria ( CAN) in Kaduna State, Rev.Joseph John Hayab has confirmed that a Catholic Priest, Fr. Joseph Bako who was kidnapped in March 2022 has died in captivity.

Hayab told Vanguard on Wednesday night that ” he was killed by his abductors. We continue to bury people, religious leaders due to the poor management of security in our state and country.”

Fr. Joseph (aged 48) was kidnapped from his residence, in St John Catholic Church Kudenda, where he was serving as Parish Priest, on the 8th March 2022.
A source told Vanguard that Fr. Bako was ill before the abduction and his abductors didn’t allow him to go with his drugs.

“He was killed there in my presence , his condition worsened and he died.
We have not recovered his corpse but we have confirmed his death, people who were kidnapped together saw him died.”

7. INEC publishes guidelines for 2023 polls next week

The regulations and guidelines for the conduct of the 2023 general elections will be out next week, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has informed.

The Commission stated this during the second quarterly meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

Its chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu said: “Beyond the conduct of primaries by political parties, the Commission is required to make Regulations and Guidelines for the implementation of the provisions of the Electoral Act. These Regulations and Guidelines, together with the Constitution and the Electoral Act, constitute the electoral legal framework that govern the conduct of elections.

8. 2023: I’m running to bring prosperity, security to Nigerians – Fayemi

Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti and a presidential aspirant on the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC), says he will ensure prosperity, security and build a better Nigeria if he becomes president

Fayemi, also the Chairman, Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), stated this at a consultative stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the party’s primaries, on Wednesday in Gombe.

He said he would “perform to the excitement of Nigerians if emerged the presidential candidate of the party, and subsequently elected, the president of the country.”

9. 2023: Amaechi resigns as Transport Minister

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has resigned his appointment

Amaechi resigned his position following President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive that all cabinet members vying for elective offices in the 2023 elections, should resign before May 16.

The President’s directive was made known on Wednesday, at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja.

The resignation of Amaechi was confirmed in a tweet by APC Twitter UK handle.

It wrote, “Nigeria’s Minister of #Transportation, HM Chibuike R. Amaechi [@ChibuikeAmaechi] has resigned from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to focus on his Presidential Campaign.

“Thank you for your service to Nigeria.”

10. 3 suspected kidnappers killed in Adamawa

Three persons suspected to be kidnappers have been killed by the police in Adamawa State.

The state Police Command in a statement sent to newsmen Wednesday night, said the incident occurred in a community in Hong Local Government Area.

The police statement signed by Police Public Relations Officer Suleiman Nguroje, said, “On 11/5/2022, the Command disconnected the criminal network at HUSA Mountain connecting part of Kala’a, Mijili and Mutuku villages in Hong LGA.

“The operation, which was carried out by the Command operatives attached to Kala’a Division and the Hunters at Husa Mountain, situated at a remote side of Kulinyi District in Hong LGA, yielded positive results.
