1. US backs Sweden, Finland bid to join NATO
The United States Wednesday gave its full support for Sweden and Finland’s bids to join NATO, promising to stand by them if threatened by Russia and pressing Turkey to not block their membership.
Hours after the two Nordic countries formally submitted their applications to enter the Atlantic alliance, President Joe Biden welcomed the move and said he would work with other NATO members and with the US Congress to ensure the process moved quickly.
“I warmly welcome and strongly support the historic applications,” Biden said, calling the two countries “longtime, stalwart partners.”
2. 2023: Ganduje refuses to endorse Amaechi for Presidency
Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has refused to endorse the former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, for the presidency come 2023.
Amaechi visited Kano on Wednesday as part of his consultations ahead of the All Progressives Congress’ presidential primary.
The former minister had resigned from the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)’s cabinet to pursue his presidential ambition under the platform of the APC.
At the meeting, with other APC stakeholders present, Ganduje said Kano as a “swing state, will continue to swing.”
3. Nigeria’s accountant-general suspended over alleged N80bn fraud
The Accountant General of the Federation, Ahmed Idris, has been suspended indefinitely over alleged N80 billion fraud.
He was suspended by the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, on Wednesday.
In a letter dated May 18, 2022, the minister said the suspension “without pay” was to allow for “proper and unhindered investigation” in line with public service rules.
On Monday, the Economic and Financial Crime Commission announced the arrest of Idris over alleged diversion and laundering of N80 billion.

4. 2023 Presidency: Buratai’s Group, Fusion 774, declares Support for Rotimi Amaechi
Fusion 774, a political support and socio-economic advocacy group which initislly drummed up support for former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen (Amb) Tukur Buratai, Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic has declared support for the aspiration of the former Minister of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, to become the president of Nigeria in 2023.
Amaechi is a Presidential Aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
National Coordinator of the group, Mr Sadiq Jikta on Wednesday said that consequent on Ambassadpr Buratai declining their call for him to contest the 2023 presidency, they are now supporting the former Transport minister.
While noting that Amaechi shared the same their vision f taking Niheria out of its prezent economic and security doldrum, Jikta said that Amb. Buratai declined their call and urged them to support any candidate that shared their vision.
5. Ngige links child labour to growing poverty in Africa
Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige has linked the scourge of child labour to pervasive poverty in the African continent.
Ngige made the remark on Wednesday while addressing the International Labour Organisation (ILO) 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour, holding in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa.
A statement signed by Mr Olajide Oshundun, Deputy Director, Press and Public Relations in the ministry, made this known in Abuja.
He said that the current administration in Nigeria had adopted multi-pronged approach to fighting child labour through reduction in poverty index, in spite of teething challenges.
6. Quality educational system, labour force attracts investment – Chukwu
The Managing Director/CEO of Cowry Asset Management, Mr. Johnson Chukwu, has identified the development of a quality educational system and improvement in the quality of the country’s labour force as the foundation for building a productive and thriving Nigerian economy.
Speaking at the just concluded 2022 Vanguard Economic Discourse in Lagos yesterday, Chukwu said that developing a strong educational system and labour force would make the country investment-ready for prospective investors.
Citing China and India as examples, Chukwu said that both countries have built very strong and effective educational systems that have developed the right kind of skills that made it possible for industries to set up in China, while Indian was able to export skilled labour abroad.
He said: “We have a labour force that has to be developed. So, the first thing you have to do is that if you want to drive your own uniqueness as a country, you must define an overarching economic policy.

7. Soldiers disrupt OAU students protest on highway
Soldiers have disrupted the protest by students of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, Osun State over ongoing strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The protesters mounted barricades on two lanes of the Ife/Ilesha/ Akure expressway.
The barricades mounted close to the Oduduwa University roundabout and Moro end of the expressway caused a girdlock on the busy highway.
By 2:45pm, a convoy led by soldiers ran into the protest at the Oduduwa University end of the road but the students insisted the convoy will not pass.
8. Kwara artisans, traders, others endorse Tinubu for President
Artisans, market women and others in Kwara state have endorsed the presidential aspiration of the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.
They made the endorsement in Ilorin, the state capital during the launch of the North Central for Asiwaju (NCFA) 2023.
NCFA is in alliance with South West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 (SWAGA).
The South West Agenda for Asiwaju 2023 is a coalition of progressives/democrats within the political landscape supporting the 2023 presidential ambition of Tinubu.
All the speakers at the event unanimoualy agreed that the former governor of Lagos state has the Midas touch to repair Nigeria based on his anticident.

9. Court jails 17 internet fraudsters in Enugu [Full list]
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abuja Zonal Command, on Wednesday, secured the conviction of seventeen internet fraudsters before Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court 1, Enugu, Enugu State.
The convicts are Aguoha Ujunwa, Samson Ebuzoeme, Iwuji Kelechi John Kennedy, Onyeanu Kinsley, Emmanuel Udo, Mmesoma Emmanuel, Prosper Chizaram Ugochukwu, Chima Chibuike Kingsley, Nzeadi Chika Camillus, Nwaugu Nzubechi Bethel.
Others are Opara Ikenna Christopher, Chindorom Gideoan Ehimere, Okoroafor Samuel and Obaa Emeka Ama, Osinachi Goodness Nwokore, Smart Clinton Onyinyoma, Iheanacho Ikenna, Chinonso Henry Ogu and Anyanwu Foxby.
The suspects were each arraigned on one-count separate charge bordering on cybercrimes.
10. Kidnappers of Greenfield University, Bethel Baptist School students arrested
The Force Intelligence Bureau Special Tactical Squad (FIB-STS) has arrested suspects connected with major violent crimes.
More than 40 AK-47 rifles, 8 Type 06 rifles, 4 Light Assault Rifles (LAR), 4 pump action guns, 2 locally made firearms, 1 G3 rifle were recovered.
Others were 1 dane gun 376 rounds of live ammunition of different calibres, and N2million cash.
A statement on Wednesday by Police spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi said Aminu Lawal (aka Kano), and Murtala Dawu (aka Mugala) were nabbed.
