1. APC extends sale of nomination form to May 10

The All Progressives Congress has extended deadline for the sale of its Expression of Interest and Nomination forms for aspirants seeking elective positions in the 2023 general election from May 6 to May 10.

The APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said this in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

“In a revised timetable issued by the APC National Organising Secretary, Mr Sulaiman Muhammad Argungu, the last day for submission of completed forms and accompanying documents is now set for Wednesday, May 11,” he said.

Morka said that the APC Congresses for election of local government, state and national delegates would hold from Thursday, May 12 to Saturday, May 14.

2. 2023: PDP upholds two presidential aspirants’ disqualification

The Peoples Democratic Party, on Wednesday in Abuja, maintained its stance on the disqualification of two out of 17 presidential aspirants namely, former lawmaker, Cosmas Ndukwe, and a US-based medical doctor, Nwachukwu Anakwenze.

Saturday PUNCH had earlier reported that the David Mark-led nine-men screening committee on Friday disqualified the two aspirants.

Briefing journalists after the exercise at Legacy House, Mark, who did not disclose the reasons for their disqualification, simply said they did not meet the requirements.

He also noted that the two aspirants will not be refunded their N40m fees paid for nomination and expression of interest forms

3. 2023: Nigeria’ll be doomed if South-East doesn’t produce president – Igbo group

The Igbo Elders Consultative Forum on Wednesday in Abuja read a riot act concerning the 2023 election, warning that any attempt by the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party to rob the South-East geo-political zone of their presidential tickets would be resisted.

They also threatened heavy sanctions against any Igbo politician and those they described as “renegades and bootlickers” that would accept to be presidential running mate to any person.

The organisation popularly known as Ime-obi Ohanaeze Ndigbo, specifically threatened that such action would spell doom for the corporate existence of Nigeria.

The chairman of IECF and former governor of Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife and Secretary, Prof. Charles Nwekeaku, said these in Abuja, during a press conference on the outcome of the its meeting where some “crucial national issues.” were discussed

4. Buhari salutes UN, world leaders for partnering Nigeria to end terrorism

President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigeria remains grateful to the United Nations and some world leaders on their steadfast partnership in fighting terrorism.

The Nigerian leader said that the spotlight on Russia and Ukraine could have easily distracted the world from other pertinent global challenges.

The president’s spokesman, Mr Femi Adesina, in a statement, said the president gave the commendation when he received the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

5. If I’m given opportunity to be President, Nigerians won’t regret it— Osinbajo

VICE President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday said that Nigerians will reap immensely if given the opportunity to serve as the President.

Prof. Osinbajo also said there is no greater privilege than to have the opportunity to give one’s best in the service of the country, contributing to society and making life better for the people.

The Vice President, who is one of the leading Presidential aspirants on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was speaking during his visits to Taraba and Adamawa States, in continuation of his engagements with stakeholders and delegates of the ruling APC in the States.

6. Police promise adequate security during President Buhari’s visit to Ebonyi

The Police Command in Ebonyi has assured citizens and visitors to Ebonyi of adequate security during President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to the state on Thursday.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Aliyu Garba, made the disclosure on Wednesday in Abakaliki while briefing newsmen after his meeting with heads of security agencies in the state.

Garba said that modalities had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free visit of the president to the state.

“All proactive measures have been taken to ensure the safety of all citizens and visitors to the state during the visit.

7. Dagogo rushed to police hospital, aide claims

Rivers embattled House of Representatives member, Dr. Farah Dagogo, has been rushed to the police hospital in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

His Special Adviser on Media, Ibrahim Lawal, who confirmed the development on Wednesday said Dagogo suffered stomach and chest complications.

Lawal said following the severity of his case, the police hospital referred him to another undisclosed hospital.

Dagogo, who represents Degema/ Bonny Federal Constituency, was last week declared wanted by Rivers State Government.

The lawmaker and governorship aspirant was whisked away by the police when he appeared at the zonal office of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt for screening.

Dagogo, who missed the screening, was arraigned at the Magistrate Court and remanded in police custody.

8. N266m fraud: How alleged fake army general changed account name – witness

A Compliance Officer with First Bank of Nigeria Plc., Mr Chris Ekpe, on Wednesday narrated how an alleged fake army general, Bolarinwa Oluwasegun, changed his bank account name to perpetrate a N266m fraud.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ekpe testified before an Ikeja Special Offences Court.

He was led in evidence by counsel to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Rotimi Oyedepo.

9. Police take action as pastor collects money from members to take them to ‘heaven’

The Ekiti State Police Command on Wednesday said that it has investigated a cleric of Christ High Commission Ministry, Pastor Noah Abraham, for allegedly collecting money from members of his church on a promise to take them to heaven after rapture in Araromi Ugbeshi-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

A statement from ASP Abutu Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer said the investigation has become necessary to avoid misinformation, unnecessary apprehension and to inform members of the public that the Command is not unaware of the trending controversial activity as necessary steps and actions have been taken.

“Based on an intelligence report received by the Command on 25/04/2022 concerning the religious activity, the Area Commander, Omuo-Oke led a team of detectives to the church camp at Araromi Ugbeshi-Ekiti. The pastor was subsequently invited to the station for interrogation.

“Meanwhile, Pastor Noah Ade Abraham, after thorough investigation, was arraigned accordingly.

“The Command pledges to closely monitor any suspicious activity by any person or group of persons across the State to ensure that the lives and properties of innocent citizens are totally protected,” the statement said.

10. ASUU strike: Amaechi, Wike don’t value education – Nigerians lament

The declaration of intention to run for presidency in 2023 has taken its toll on Nigerians, especially students who have stayed home for three months due to the ongoing Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, strike.

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, embarked on strike in February over the failure of the Federal Government to address their concerns.

Despite lingering strike action, ministers under this administration have declared intentions to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari without proffering any solution to the lingering strike action.

The numbers of presidential aspirants have continued to increase daily while ASUU and the government fail to reach truce.
