The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, UNODC, yesterday, unveiled the Observatory Report on Smuggling of Migrants (SOM) , aimed at unravelling the dynamics of smuggling of migrants activities through and to Nigeria, between 2019 and 2021.
At the unveiling ceremony held at the NIS headquarters Abuja, the Comptroller General of Immigration, IsahJere Idris, reiterated the NIS commitment to contain the menace of smuggling.
The CGI who was represented by the Deputy Comptroller General in-charge of Visa and Residency, DCG IAM Halirufdc, informed that the service had been statutorily empowered with the necessary legal instrument to prosecute Smugglers of Migrants.
The statutory empowerment, according to him, was backed by the Immigration Act 2015 (Sections 65-98), having fully domesticated the Protocol against the Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air.
THE Edo State Police Command yesterday said it has killed three out of a six-man kidnapping gang who abducted a 13 month old baby in Achigbor Community along Benin – Auchi road in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state.
A statement by the state deputy Spokesperson, ASP Jennifer Iwegbu said the police got a tip off from the mother of the baby before going after kidnappers.
She said “A distraught resident, Elizabeth Ojo (42 years) of Achigbor Community along Benin-Auchi Road, in Uhunmwonde LGA of Edo State at about 19:30hrs on 13/09/2022 raised an alarm that kidnappers came to her compound in Achigbor Community along Benin – Auchi road in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state.
A civil society group, operating under the aegis of Africa Youth Growth Foundation, AYGF, has said Nigeria would be faced with a workforce gap following the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.
This came as the organisation said the strike by lecturers of public universities was having a toll, particularly on engineering, research and development.
In these regards,the organisation appealed to both the federal government and ASUU to shift ground, saying such was needed in the interest of the students, parents, and the nation in general.

The Southwest zone of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday raised a committee to engage eminent persons across the region on the need to support its presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and other party candidates.

Farmers across the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have expressed their readiness to tap the opportunities in cassava and maize value chain as proposed by the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday remanded Samuel Harrison at the Kirikiri Correctional Center for alleged theft of his employer’s car and other valuables.
The Magistrate, Mrs O. O Fajana remanded the defendant after he pleaded guilty to conspiracy and stealing.
Fajana adjourned the case until September 28 for sentencing, NAN reports.
The 46-year-old defendant resides at the Ilaje area of Ajah in Lagos.
