1. Nigerians need sensitisation to vote-trading dangers – CSO
A human rights organisation under the aegis of Civic Hive, an affiliate of BudgIT has raised fears over the menace of vote trading, describing it as a threat to the 2023 election.
The organisation, therefore, recommended serious awareness campaigns to educate the electorate on the dangers of vote buying and selling.
The Team Lead for Civic Hive, Afolabi Oluwaseun, stated these in an interview with The PUNCH during a Fellowship close house session which held in Abuja where the organisation call for applications in the non-profit sector.
He said, “So, we call for applications for ideas like this and support them with resources. This particular Fellowship started in March and it closed in September. Within the first three months, we brought in facilitators within and outside Nigeria to impact our Fellows, we also support them with our technology and other forms of support we can give to them at this point in time. The whole idea is not related to elections but to bringing new leaders into the civic tech space.
2. Discuss with IPOB, Yoruba agitators, IHRC urges FG
The International Human Rights Commission on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to engage Indigenous People of Biafra, Yoruba nation agitators and bandits in dialogue for peace to reign in Nigeria.
While attributing kidnapping, banditry and killings, among other forms of insecurity in the country to the bad economy, the commission also expressed concern over the exodus of Nigerian youths overseas.
The IHRC’s Ambassador at Large and Head of Diplomatic Missions in Nigeria, Dr. Duru Hezekiah, said these while addressing journalists in Abuja on the occasion of 2022 International Peace Day observed every September 21.
He urged the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)-led regime to declare a state of emergency in tackling the menace of youth exodus.
3. Parents have say in ASUU strike, says activist
The Executive Director, Nigeria Network of Non-Governmental Organisations, Oyebisi Oluseyi, has said that parents have a say in the ongoing strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, as they are critical stakeholders in the educational sector.
Oluseyi disclosed this, Tuesday, at a press conference in Lagos. He stated that parents needed to get involved in matters regarding the ongoing strike.
He said, “Parents need to see themselves as critical stakeholders in the educational sector. They are to get involved in conversations regarding ASUU and find a balance. They have a say in what is happening, they should not always wait for human rights defenders and others.
“They are major stakeholders because they’re the ones who paid the school fees so parents are the customers, universities are the service providers and the government provides the regulation.

4. Bullion van robbery: Forgive me, it’s my first time, dismissed DSS begs
Prosper Chijioke, a dismissed personnel of the Department of State Services, DSS, who was arrested in connection with the July 26 Bullion van robbery at the Ntigha junction of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway way, is begging for forgiveness.
Chijioke who was paraded at the Abia State Police Headquarters, Bende Road Umuahia, along with other members of the 14-man robbery gang, claimed that it was his first time to be involved in criminality.
The Ugwuagbo Local Government Area, Abia State-born ex-DSS personnel, said he was dismissed from the service in 2007.
On what led to his dismissal, he said he reported late to his new place of deployment after serving at the Government House.
5. NASS ‘ll find lasting solution to lingering crisis in aviation sector – Sen Olujimi
THE newly appointed Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Biodun Olujimi, has assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would help find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis in the Aviation sector.
According to her, to achieve this, she would work in synergy with her counterpart in the House of Representatives.
Answering questions from Journalists yesterday in reaction to her new appointment as the Chairman of the Committee, Olujimi stressed the importance of the sector to the economy saying that the committee will ensure adequate oversight functions to the Ministry and agencies to ensure it thrives.
She said, “I thank the Senate President Ahmad Lawan for deeming it fit to give me the chairmanship of the committee.
6. 2023: Govt won’t fund political parties – Gbajabiamila
The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, Wednesday, said it was no longer possible for the government to fund political parties in Nigeria.
According to him, funding political parties will subject them to government control as against democratic ethos and values.
Gbajabiamila added that it will also lead to the proliferation of political parties.
Speaking while receiving a delegation of the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the National Assembly in Abuja on Wednesday, Gbajabiamila said that people would abuse the process by registering hundreds of political parties with the aim of benefiting from government free money.

7. Sanwo-Olu assures new Oloworo of support, development
Lagos Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu and Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi have rejoiced with the new Oloworo of Oworonshoki, Oba Babatunde Saliu over his official coronation.
The prime Yoruba monarch was supported by the Ojora of Ijoraland, Oba Fatai Aromire, Osolo of Isolo, Oba Kabir Agbabiaka, Elegushi of Ikateland, Oba Ademola Elegushi, Olofin Adimula of Isheri Olofin, Oba Sulaimon Bamgbade and Oniru of Iru, Oba Gbolahan Lawal among others.
Addressing the august audience in Yoruba, the Ooni of Ife congratulated the entire Oworonshoki Kingdom on the choice of the new Oba and urged the sons and daughters of the land to rally around him for peace, prosperity and accelerated development to be achieved.
The Ooni, who noted that he had had about 20- year working relationship with Oworonshoki, said he was happy that the person who facilitated that relationship is now king.
8. Ngige: Court order won’t stop further negotiation with ASUU
The Federal Government has declared that nobody won or lost in the ruling of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), ordering members of the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to work.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, made the declaration while receiving members of the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) in his office on Wednesday.
Ngige also assured that the court ruling does not preclude further negotiation between the Federal Government and ASUU.
The Minister said the government would order the vice-chancellors to reopen the universities in compliance with the order of the court

9. You can’t install Obas in Irokun, Obinehin, Idigbengben, Araromi – Ogun to Ondo govt
The Ogun State Government has told its Ondo State counterpart that it has no power to install traditional rulers in Obinehin, Idigbengben and Araromi Seaside.
According to the Ogun State Government, the four of Obinehin, Idigbengben and Araromi Seaside are communities under Ogun Waterside Local Government, not in Ondo.
The Ogun State in a statement on Wednesday said it got the notice of a statement issued recently by the Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Charles Titiloye, purportedly approving the installation of traditional rulers in the said communities.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Abdulwaheed Odusile, said in the statement that there had been generating concern within these peace-loving communities in Ogun State.
10. Court refuses Baba Ijesha‘s bail application
An Ikeja Special Offences Court has refused the bail application pending appeal filed by the convicted Nollywoord actor, James Olarewaju, AKA, Baba Ijesha.
Baba Ijesha’s bail was rejected because he did not meet exceptional circumstances and criteria to warrant the bail.
According to Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, the actor must show special and exceptional circumstances because the term given to him is five years which is to run concurrently.
Justice Taiwo also said there is no evidence that the appeal has been entered and there is no indication before the court that it will not treat the case expeditiously.
“It is in the view of this court that the applicant has failed to show special circumstances to warrant him bail because he is facing a serious crime,” he added.
