1. Govt returns 12,000 Katsina IDPs to hometown

The Katsina State Government on Monday returned no fewer than 12,000 Internally Displaced Persons to their hometown, Shimfida, Jibia Local Government Area of the state.

Persistent attacks by terrorists had forced the IDPs to leave Shimfida on 10 March, 2022.

While about 6,000 of them were resettled at Government Girls Secondary School, Jibia,the rest relocated to communities in the neighbouring Niger Republic.

The Chairman of Jibia Local Government Area, Bishir Sabiu, said shortly before the IDPs were returned to their ancestral town that both the state and the council were taking care of the IDPs in Jibia.

He also disclosed that those who relocated to the neighbouring Niger Republic were earlier in the day brought back to Jibia where they would join others on the trip back to Shimfida.

Sabi’u revealed that an initial N88.6 million was doled out by the state government for the exercise.

2. Asefon still in charge, says NANS Senate

The Senate Secretariat of the National Association of Nigerian Students, on Monday, said Adedayo Asefon remained the constitutionally recognised President of the association.

The NANS Senate stated this while reacting to a recent statement claiming that NANS had fixed Friday, August 12, 2022, to inaugurate an acting National President among the two constitutionally recommended zonal coordinators of the association.

The said statement signed by the Secretary of Zone A Stakeholders Forum, Usman Mohammed, said the action was in line with the association’s new constitution as amended article.

However, while denouncing the statement, NANS Senate described Mohammed’s statement as malicious, stating that he was neither a Senator in NANS nor a member of the Senate.

It explained that the said release did not in any way align with the requirements of the constitution of NANS.

The Senate explained further that the said comrade did not have any authority to remove an elected president let alone inaugurating a new executive without an election.

3. Gunmen abduct Katsina senator’s sister-in-law, two children

Gunmen on Sunday night abducted the wife of Mani Babba Kaita, the younger brother of the Senator representing Daura senatorial district of Katsina State, Senator Ahmed Babba Kaita.

The gunmen also abducted two children in Mani’s neighbourhood at Unguwar Bakin Kasuwa, Kankia Local Government Area of the state.

Residents disclosed that the gunmen arrived Mani’s residence late at night on Sunday and abducted his wife before storming a nearby house where the two children were also abducted.

The residents gave the name of the father of the abducted children as Sabe Halilu.

4. 2023 polls: PDP ready to flush out APC from Lagos — Jandor boasts

Governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Lagos, Dr. Olajide Adediran, popularly called Jandor, has expressed confidence that all the 69 candidates of the party have resolved to flush out the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in 2023 general polls in the state.

Speaking at a strategic stakeholders’ meeting and official presentation of the 69 candidates of the PDP to the media, at the weekend in Lagos, Jandor noted that for over two decades, Lagos has been having recycling of only one Governor, under the control of one man, stressing that, “it’s time to get the second governor, the people’s and popular governor with a breath of fresh air.”

According to Jandor, “We, the 69 candidates of the PDP have resolved to take back Lagos from the grip of one man who has held the state down for the past 23 years. This time it’s game over.

5. Abike visits family of Nigerian killed in Canada

Chairman/CEO, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, (NIDCOM), Hon (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa, on Monday  paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family of Mr. Chibueze Momah at their Lagos residence to convey her deepest sympathy and support for the Family.

Dabiri-Erewa prayed for the Almighty God to give the family the strength to bear the irreparable loss of their son who only just graduated in Computer programming a few months before his untimely death.

In a statement made available to journalists signed by Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Gabriel Odu, explained that  Both victims worked at the ATL lounge in Vaughn, Ontario as security guards.

The father Mr Ikechukwu Momah, on behalf of the family thanked the NIDCOM Boss and her team for the prompt visit and pleaded for a thorough investigation into the matter.

6. FG partners World Bank to address environmental degradation in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria in collaboration with The World Bank, on Monday, reiterated determination to address environmental degradation in19 states of the country including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

This will be done through the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project launched recently.

Mohammed Abdullahi, Minister of Environment, disclosed this during ACReSAL Project Technical Work Plan Workshop which took place in Victoria Island, Lagos State.

He said the project will be handled by the Federal Ministries of Environment, Agriculture and Water Resources.

7. Six Shi’ites feared dead, scores injured in Zaria

No fewer than six members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) have been reportedly killed with unspecific numbers injured during the procession to mark this year’s Ashura Day in Zaria.

Confirming the death, the leader of the movement in Zaria, Mallam Abdulhamid Bello alleged that a combined team of security agents invaded their procession along Zaria city market and started shooting sporadically, leading to the death of their members with many injured.

He gave the names of those killed as Jafar Magaji Jushi, Kazeem Lawal Magume, Ali Lawal Samaru, Muhsin Badamasi Yakub Zakzaky, Umar Inuwa anguwar Fatika and one other person whose name he could not remember as at the time.

Bello further explained the number of casualties has not been completely recorded yet but added “a lot of them have been rushed to St Luke’s hospital in Wusasa while those in critical condition were taken to ABU teaching hospital Shika Zaria.”

8. Six die, two injured in truck gas explosion

Six persons were confirmed dead and two others injured when a tanker carrying gas and a Volvo 626 car collided on Monday afternoon.

The accident, which occurred at the Olokuta area of Idiroko – Ota road, was caused by “wrongful overtaking which led to the head-on collision,” Superintendent Route Commander and Public Education Officer, Florence Okpe, disclosed this on behalf of Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ogun Sector Command, Umar Ahmed.

Ahmed said the gas that keeps spilling out seriously was making rescue operations difficult.

9. Troops raid Boko Haram illegal market, kill four terrorists in Borno

Troops of the 21 Amoured Brigade Bama have killed four Boko Haram terrorists when it invaded an illegal market established by the terrorists in the outskirt of Bama Local Government Area in the North East of Borno State.

The decisive victory was recorded against the terrorists on Monday when the troops came in contact with the insurgents at an illegal market in Dambia also known as Markas, while conducting clearance operations.

Sources told Zagazola Makama, a counter insurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad, that the on sighting the troops, the terrorists opened fire but the insurgents were subdued by the troops.

“In the fierce encounter, four BH/ISWAP terrorists were instantly neutralised, while others, bowing to superior firepower retreated and ran to the forest,” he said.

The sources said that four women suspected to be wives of the terrorists were wounded during cross fire. They were, however, evacuated to Bama General Hospital for treatment.

10. NURTW warns members against 2023 politics

The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has warned members to stay away from partisan politics.

Kwara State Chairman, AbdulKareem AbdulRasak, said the body was keen on ensuring peaceful elections in 2023.

AbdulRasak noted that the rules governing the NURTW do not allow any member to belong to political platforms.

“Once you are a member, you cannot support any political party, not to talk of campaigning for or moving around with them”, he told NAN.

The chairman warned that anyone found participating in rallies or fighting for politicians will be punished and dismissed.
