1. Fire guts residential building in Lagos
Fire has gutted a residential building on Aladelola Street, Ikosi Ketu area of Lagos State on Monday.
The raging fire was seen razing the building as residents who trooped to the scene watched from afar.
The fire is still currently ongoing, with men of the fire service making efforts to put it out.
The PUNCH gathered that the water in the first tank of the fire service truck got exhausted, with another truck coming in afterwards.
2. Slain Lagos lawyer was pregnant — Designer, Toyin Lawani
Celebrity designer, Toyin Lawani, has revealed that the lawyer, Bolanle Raheem, who was killed by a police officer attached to the Ajiwe Police Station in the Ajah area of Lagos State on Christmas Day, was pregnant.
Sharing a video via her Instagram account on Monday, Lawani revealed her relationship with the deceased, their last chat, and more.
She said, “Look, I cried myself to sleep but it is not a joke, Bolanle is gone. She still chatted with me last week. She is very peaceful, her husband always ready to go… they don’t have ‘wahala’ and I heard this morning that she was shot by the police at Ajah. She went to buy pizza for Christmas, for her daughter, she was shot in front of her daughter. The police asked them to park and there was a car in front of them, they were about to park not like they were moving or anything and they shot her in the chest. She died on the spot.
“She is pregnant. Nigeria police, when are you people going to stop giving these drunkards uniforms. These people on the road, they will be disturbing everybody’s peace for no reason, trying to extort money from people. Christmas Day, Bolanle! Haaa! Oh my God! We must all make sure that we support her, make sure whoever did this to her pays for his crime.”
3. Activist knocks Buhari over Leah Shabiru’s continued captivity
A peace advocate, Rev. Gideon Para-Mallam, on Monday berated the Federal Government for its inability to secure the freedom of Leah Sharibu who had celebrated her fifth Christmas in the captivity of Boko Haram insurgents.
The activist called on the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and his All Progressives Congress-led regime to fulfill his promise to release her from Boko Haram den.
He also reminded all men and women of goodwill, common sense and those who celebrate humanity to “remember that Leah Sharibu is an innocent human being, kept against her will in captivity by Boko Haram.”
Para-Mallam, President and CEO of Para-Mallam Peace Foundation, made the lamentation in a statement titled, ‘Leah Sharibu’s 5th Christmas in Captivity: Should we care or remain silent?’, obtained by journalists in Abuja.

4. Three bloated bodies recovered in Kirikiri carnal in three days
The sight of dead bodies floating on the Kirikiri canal, Apapa, Lagos, has assumed a disturbing phenomenon, with three bodies –two males and a female recovered within three days.
These bloated bodies which usually floated towards the shore of Vanguard’s corporate office, emit distinct odours.
Last year, over nine bloated bodies in their decomposing states were found in the same canal, some with injuries.
5. Obi supporters kick as ‘Atiku/Obi’ campaign posters emerge in Bauchi
A Coalition of supporters of the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) Peter Obi and his running mate, Yusuf Ahmed Datti known has dissociated itself from a campaign poster in circulation the pictures of the presidential candidate of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar and their candidate Peter Obi as presidential and vice presidential candidates in the 2023 general elections.
The Coalition said that its candidate has not formed any political alliance with anyone.
Speaking with journalists in Bauchi on Monday, the Chairman of Obidatti Coalition, Elder Musa Abel described the development as a deliberate effort to confuse teeming supporters of the LP in the state.
6. Kukah blast Buhari on anti corruption, federal character
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah has lambasted President Muhammadu Buhari on his war against corruption, but commended his efforts in the area of infrastructures which he said has been tremendously improved.
The bishop acknowledged that, there has been a measurable improvement in the landscape especially in the area of roads and railway .
In his Christmas message delivered at St. Mary Catholic Church, Sokoto, titled “Let us turn a new leaf,” Bishop Kukah remarked that, “it is sad that despite your lofty promises, you are leaving us far more vulnerable than when you came, that the corruption we thought would be fought has become a leviathan and sadly, a consequence of a government marked by nepotism.
“In my Message last year, I pointed out that you had breached the Constitution by your failure to honour and adhere to the federal character provisions of our Constitution. Thus evidence is all before us all.

7. IPOB leader Kanu seeks end to violence in Southeast
Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has called for an end to violence in the Southeast.
Kanu, who is in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), conveyed the message through his lawyers during a visit to him.
He said the enemies were relentlessly exploiting the people and recruiting criminals to destroy Igboland and blame it on IPOB.
8. Gunmen kill retired squadron leader in Plateau
Gunmen have killed a retired squadron leader, Mrs. Hellen Godos, in the Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Her son was abducted but later released, while another person was shot.
The incident occurred at about 8 pm on Christmas eve.
The assailants forced themselves into Godos’ residence after firing shots.

9. Drug war: US approves forensic, intelligence support for NDLEA
The United States government has announced a project that would boost the war against illicit drugs in Nigeria.
The support will strengthen forensic and chemical analysis, intelligence gathering and prosecution capability of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is coordinating the intervention.
NDLEA Director of Media, Femi Babafemi made the announcement in a statement on Monday.
10. NCAA alert pilots, airlines of hazardous weather during dry season
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, has warned pilots and all airline operators to exercise caution over hazardous weather during this dry season.
NCAA gave this warning in an Advisory Circular, AC, signed by the Director General, Capt. Musa Nuhu dated 19th December 2022, with reference no AC: NCAA-AEROMET – 34 initiated by the Directorate of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards, DAAS, addressed to Pilots and all Airline Operators.
Following the Seasonal Climate Prediction, SCP, that cessation of rainfall and weather associated with the dry season in Nigeria from late December 2022 to March/April 2023 by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET, NCAA alerted pilots about the nature of weather associated with the dry season in the nation ranging from light/moderate to severe dust haze and sometime early morning fog which can sometime reduce the horizontal visibility to below the aerodrome operating minima.
