1. God foiled deliberate attempts to destroy Nigeria — Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital, said God foiled “deliberate attempts to destroy Nigeria.”

Buhari also said the country had “bounced back” from its troubled days, thanking members of the Armed Forces and the police for their sacrifices in protecting the country.

“There was a deliberate attempt to destroy Nigeria but God did not permit it,’’ Buhari said at the palace of the Emir of Damaturu, Hashimi II El-Kanemi.

This is according to a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled, ‘With victory over terrorists, we must develop strong confidence in our country, President Buhari says’.

2. Killing: Lagosians’ rights violated under Sanwo-Olu – AAC candidate

The governorship candidate of the African Action Congress in Lagos State, Akeem Olayiwola, has condemned the killing that took place during the rally of the Yoruba Nation agitators in the Ojota area of the state.

“It is a bad omen for police to keep shooting at voices of dissent,” Olayiwola said in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Monday, as he claimed that the rights of Lagosians were “grossly violated” under the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The PUNCH reports that the self-determination group “Yoruba Nation” gathered at Ojota, earlier on Monday gathered to rally at Ojota, and in the course of this, there was an unrest that led to a fracas between the group and the police.

3. Sit-at-home: Travellers trapped as roads, motor parks deserted

Travellers across the South-East states who were returning to their various destinations after the Yuletide celebration were on Monday stranded and unable to make return journeys as the roads and motor parks were deserted because of the Monday sit-at-home order declared by the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Most of them who had wanted to embark on their return journey had to sit back, thereby postponing their travels to Tuesday as economic and commercial activities did not hold.

Our correspondent who visited the major cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, Ekwulobia and some parts of Awka, in Anambra State, observed that markets, motor parks, petrol stations, banks and offices remained shut. Schools did not also open for academic activities.

The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr. Peter Obi has said those pushing the narrative that he was stingy were those who feel threatened by his commitment to enforce fiscal discipline in the use of public funds.

He debunked claims that he was stingy by nature.

Obi said this while speaking as a special guest in a programme at the Human Rights Radio popularly called Berekete Radio, in Abuja, on Monday.

5. Atiku-Okowa mocks Tinubu over Buhari’s Adamawa snub

The Atiku/Okowa Presidential Campaign Organization has mocked the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following what it described as President Muhammadu Buhari’s obvious snub during Monday’s APC campaign in Adamawa.

The PDP said it was clear that Buhari avoided the booby trap of identifying with Tinubu when the outgoing President declined to speak directly in favour of Asiwaju by commending him for anything during the rally.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Spokesperson of the PDP Campaign, Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, on Monday.

6. Tanker drivers protest alleged killing of colleague in Rivers

Tanker drivers in Rivers State have staged a protest following the alleged killing of their member by security personnel attached to a government task force team in the area.

The enraged truck drivers used their vehicles yesterday to block the Emohua axis of the East-West road in protest.

It was gathered that the murdered driver, whose name could not be obtained, was stopped by the task force team allegedly constituted by Emohua local government authority before the disagreement started.

7. US lawmaker demands IPOB leader Kanu’s release

A United States lawmaker, Jarvis Johnson, on Monday urged the Federal Government to immediately release the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Johnson represents District 39 in the Texas House of Representatives.

He made the call in a statement entitled: “Representative Johnson speaks out against oppression within the Nigerian Government and the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu”.

8. Ganduje: opposition free to use Kano stadia, others for campaign

Opposition parties in Kano have the right to use public properties in the state, including sports complexes, for their campaign rallies, the state government said on Monday.
Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje directed that the facilities be made available to all political parties.

He, however, said any political party wishing to use the facilities must first obtain clearance from security agencies.

9. Rivers: Appeal Court reserves judgment on appeal filed by APC guber candidate, Cole

The Appeal Court sitting in Port Harcourt has reserved judgment in an appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, and its governorship candidate, Tonye Cole against the Peoples Democratic Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission over judgment of a Federal High that sacked Tonye Cole as governorship candidate of the APC.

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt presided over by Justice Emmanuel Obile had in his judgment on a suit filed by the PDP ruled that Tonye Cole be disqualified as governorship candidate of APC for allegedly having dual citizenship and that the APC violated the Electoral Act in the conduct of the congresses and the primary election that brought in Cole as candidate.

When the matter came up before the Appeal panel, counsels representing the parties argued and adopted their final written addresses.

10. I hope to retire in peace, relocate to Katsina – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he would deploy the remaining four months he has left as president to be steadfast in governance so as to retire in peace.

He made the pledge on Monday in Damaturu while speaking at the palace of the Emir of Damaturu, Hashimi II El-Kanemi.

Commenting on security, Buhari enjoined Nigerians to develop a strong sense of confidence in their country, especially its institutions and desist from allowing any terrorist groups to destabilize Nigeria again.
