1. PDP loses suit seeking to disqualify LP, YPP candidates

The Federal High Court, Abuja has struck out the suit by the Peoples Democratic Party seeking disqualification of governorship and National Assembly candidates of the Labour Party and Young Progressives Party, in the 2023 general elections.

The suit was on Monday thrown out by the court for want of diligent prosecution.

In the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1899/2022, PDP sought an order from the court nullifying the published names of candidates of the two parties.

The party also sought another order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission to delete the names of the published candidates.

2. ‘Lagos generates 2.2m litres untreated domestic wastewater daily’

Mrs Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the wife of Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  says the state generates 2.2 million cubic meters of untreated domestic wastewater daily.

She made this known in Victoria Island at a ”3-Day Workshop on Regulating Urban Sanitation Services: Faecal Sludge/Wastewaste Management Guidelines and Standards.”

Sanwo-Olu said the 2.2 million kilolitres of untreated domestic wastewater generated daily,  was based on the 120 litres of water used per person per day.

She said that with a population of over 20 million and annual growth of 2.9 per cent, sanitation management was currently a challenge in Lagos state.

3. I’ve reconstructed over 400km roads so far – Abiodun

The governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, says his administration has reconstructed over 400 kilometres of highways in three years and seven months.

 Abiodun said this on Monday during the inauguration of the 18-kilometre Ejirin -Idowa-Ibefun-Itokin road in the Odogbolu Local Government Area of the state.

Abiodun said that since the commencement of his campaign, his administration had been able to inaugurate road construction in all the local governments visited so far.

Abiodun added, “we inaugurated the Itori township road in Ewekoro Local Government Area last week. We are in Ijebu East where we inaugurated the Esure road.

4. Suspected abduction of NJC staff in Abuja causes panic, as Police keep mum

There has been tension and fear among residents of estates around Gwarimpa as kidnappers reportedly struck and abducted a resident of one of the estates the EFAB Metropolitan Estate on Sunday.

The victim is said to be a female staff of the National Judicial Council, Abuja.

Sources said she came down from her vehicle to buy fruits from a makeshift fruit store by the road when the kidnappers attacked her and escaped with her to the shock of onlookers.

The lady was said to have been kidnapped at the intersection between three of the biggest estates around Gwarimpa – Efab Metropolitan, Mab Global Estate, and Ipent 7 Estate.

5. Six persons to die by hanging in Osun for murder, armed robbery

Justice Jide Falola of an Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo on Monday sentenced six persons to death over murder and armed robbery.

The judge convicted Hammed Rafiu, 37, Rasidi Waidi, 39, Kayode Sunday, 29, and Owolabi Bashiru, 54, a security guard, docked before the court on October 23, 2019, on six counts including setting ablaze the cousin of former Osun state deputy governor, Benedict Alabi after forcing him to transfer the sum of N3 million into Rafiu’s account.

They were also docked for conspiracy to commit murder, stealing, kidnapping, and armed robbery contrary to sections 6(b), section 1(1), and (2) (a) (b), of the Robbery and Firearms (special provisions) Act, Cap R11, Laws of Federation of Nigeria, 324, 319, 390(9) and 364 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume 2, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.

Prosecution counsel from the Ministry of Justice, Dele Akintayo, said the four-man gang murdered one Victor Akinbile a cousin of Mr Alabi who traveled down to Ikirun, Osun State on November 26, 2018.

6. Delta Polls: Omo-Agege challenges Oborevwori to public debate

Deputy Senate President and Delta All Progressives Congress, APC, Governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has challenged the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate and Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, to a public debate on their stewardship to the Urhobo people of Delta Central.

Senator Omo-Agege threw the challenge, Monday, January 16, in Orerokpe, headquarters of Oborevwori’s Okpe LGA,  where the ongoing ward-to-ward campaign of the APC started for the new week, continuing on to Aghalokpe and Adeje.

“I hereby use this opportunity to challenge Sheriff Oborevwori, Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly and governorship candidate of the PDP to a debate on national television to give account of our stewardship so far to the people we represent.”.

Senator Omo-Agege said the 2023 governorship election in Delta State is basically between APC and PDP and therefore, expected Oborevwori and himself, both Urhobos,  to submit the report cards of their stewardship to their Constituents, in the full view of Deltans and Nigerians in general.

7. Rivers interest will prevail in 2023, Wike insists

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has branded the next presidential election as a fight to the finish, saying the state’s interest will prevail at last.

He said the election would be a watershed that would decide the fate of those, working against the interest of the state.

Wike said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State would win the governorship, National and House of Assembly elections.

The Governor, however, said the leaders of the party would approach voters and brief them on the direction of the state for the presidential election.

8. Nollywood stars rally for Tinubu in Lagos

It was quite an exhilarating moment when some Nollywood actors under the aegis of Connecting Grassroots Initiative (CGI) and some residents of Mushin Local Government Area in Lagos State at the weekend rallied for the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress(APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his running mate Senator Kashim Shettima.

They also canvassed support for Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy Femi Hamzat.

Some of the Nollywood stars at the rally were Bimbo Akintola, Damola Olatunji, Doyin Kukoya and others.

Placards, banners, fliers, Tee shirts and caps bearing the faces of Bola Ahmed Tinubu/Shettima and Babajide Sanwo Olu / Hamzat made a colorful scenery.

9. Nigeria’s December inflation marginal decline not worth celebrating – Expert

An Accounting and Financial Development don at Lead City University, Ibadan, Prof Godwin Oyedokun said the Nigeria’s 0.13 per cent December inflation figure decline is not worth celebrating.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, NBS, Consumer Price Index Report on Monday, December inflation slightly declined from 21.47% in November 2022 to 21.34% in December 2022.

The reduction is the first time the country’s inflation figures dropped in the last 11 months.

“In December 2022, the headline inflation rate eased to 21.34% compared to November 2022 headline inflation rate which was 21.47%”, NBS said.

10. Atiku not afriad of investigation – Dino Melaye

Former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye has said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar is not afraid of investigation.

Speaking against the background of alleged money laundering, Melaye said Atiku is the most investigated Nigerian.

The spokesman of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council disclosed this while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.

Melaye said Atiku has always submitted himself for investigation.
