1. INEC collaborating with ICPC, EFCC on vote-buying — Commission
The Independent National Electoral Commission has said it is collaborating with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Matters Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to check vote-buying during the general elections.
INEC described vote-buying was as a cankerworm that had eaten deep into the fabric of the nation, noting that it is also sensitising youths in various communities across the country to monitor and report anyone involved in the act during the elections.
INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Johnson Sinikiem, stated this in Port Harcourt on Monday, during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Week of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.
The week is themed “Media Vigilance Ahead of Peaceful 2023 Election in Rivers State.”
2. Climate change: NiMet to partner Niger Republic, Gambia
The Federal Government is set to partner with Niger Republic and Gambia on issues bothering climate change.
The Managing Director, Nigerian Meteorological Prof. Mansur Matazu disclosed this on Monday when officials from the National Meteorological Services of Niger Republic paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
Matazu said that the agency would also be sharing its experience with both countries on Seasonal Planet Prediction which Nigeria has been implementing in the last 15 years.
He further noted that they would be exploring various areas of interest, adding that there was a critical area for Niger Republic which is the Seasonal Planet Prediction.
3. 25,000 persons missing in North-East —Stakeholders
No fewer than 25,000 persons are said to be missing according to stakeholders as they meet to ensure their families are not forgotten.
According to a statement made available on Monday to our correspondent by the International Committee of the Red Cross, the conflict in North-East resulted in the missing persons
The statement was signed by Aliyu Dawobe and Pat Griffiths, issued ahead of its Tuesday meeting with stakeholders co-hosted by the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as well as the National Human Rights Commission.
The stakeholders said the “essence of the meeting would be to seek solutions for those missing and their families,” the Deputy Protection Coordinator ICRC Kouame Adjoumani, was quoted to have said.

4. Utomi urges INEC to look into alleged PVCs withholding in Lagos
Political Economist, Prof. Pat Utomi on Monday, urged INEC to investigate allegations of withholding/non-issuance of Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) to the electorate in Lagos State.
Utomi, the Convener and Chairman of the Big Tent Coalition for Obi-Datti presidency, urged the commission to look into allegations of deliberate plan to defranchise people by making collecting the PVC difficult for some group of people in the state.
He made the call at the inauguration of the Lagos state chapter of the Big Tent coalition for Obi-Datti.
“NEC must consider this alleged abuse as a violation of the electoral Act and act in an accountable manner on the matter and tackle it headlong.”
5. Two professors jostle for LASU deputy VC post
Two professors are currently jostling for the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo.
The two candidates are Professor Olufunsho Abayomi Omobitan of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and Professor Raheem Akewusola the Faculty of Management Sciences.
They will on Monday, January 30th, this year, slug it out in an election by the university’s Senate.
6. Tinubu will fulfil all his electoral promises if elected — Akeredolu
Governor Rotimi Akeredolu has assured Nigerians that the All Progressive Congress Presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will fulfil all his electoral promises.
Akeredolu, while speaking at a campaign rally held at Methodist Primary School, Okitipupa, area of Ondo state, said that ” our party parades the best candidates, from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and his running mate, Senator Kashim Shettima and other candidates across this state.
He noted that Tinubu ” has track records and experience to lead the country.

7. Buhari commissions $1.5bn Lekki Deep Sea Port
President Muhammadu Buhari has commissioned the much-awaited $1.5B Lekki Deep Sea Port project in Lagos.
He arrived at the facility at exactly 4.27 pm in the company of Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The project, according to Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperative Dr Lola Akande, was initiated by the presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to boost the economy of the state and the country in general.
8. Int’l travellers must provide vaccination evidence, says FG
The Federal Government has announced international travellers coming into the country will be required to show evidence of vaccination.
It stated that this new directive is in light of the recently reported upsurge in COVID-19 cases in China, Japan, the United States of America (USA) and other countries.
However, unvaccinated passengers will be required to get vaccinated at the airport.
On December 12, 2022, the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19 relaxed safety measures.

9. Kwara: Police neutralize three suspected kidnappers, arrest nine others
The Kwara State Police Command, on Sunday neutralized three suspected kidnappers and arrested nine others in a major crackdown on kidnapping activities and harvest of kidnap suspects.
The neutralized persons were identified as Bala Idris, Hasan Idris, and Baso Idris, while three locally made guns and ten cartridges were recovered after an exchange of gunfire with the police, Vigilantes and local hunters.
Two other suspects belonging to the neutralized persons gang, Lagi Bala and Iliasu Idris, were however arrested.
At a press briefing in Ilorin on Monday, state Commissioner of Police, Paul Odama, disclosed that
“On the 22/1/2023 at about 0900HRS an intelligence available to the Divisional Police Officer, Bode Sadu to the effect that suspected kidnappers were in the bush along Balogun area, Bode Saadu in preparation to strike.
10. EPL: Chelsea to buy two Everton players after Lampard’s sack
Chelsea are looking to capitalize on the chaos at Everton with a new approach for Anthony Gordon and Amadou Onana, the UK Telegraph reports.
