Top 10 Newspaper Headlines Tuesday, July 12th 2022

Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. Security situation has improved nationwide, Presidency claims

The Presidency, on Monday, claimed that the security situation has improved nationwide in the last seven years, warranting the removal of security barricades around the Media Trust Head office in Abuja.

“Seven years is a long time and their new managers may be unaware that in 2015, The Daily Trust needed barriers around their premises and heavy security- as did many other sensitive institutions- to be safe from terrorists. Now, they have all that removed, a clear indication that the threats, as they existed at that time have abated,” the Presidency said in a statement signed by President Buhari’s Spokesman, Garba Shehu.

The response came 24 hours after a scathing editorial by the media house in which it castigated the Buhari regime for last Tuesday’s Kuje attack lamenting that “no one would be held responsible for such a massive breach in security.”

Describing the piece as “ill-informed”, the Presidency said although “the authors are correct that Nigeria like every other country in the world is undergoing a period of hardship, all and any suggestion that the Buhari administration is not leaving Nigeria in a better place than we found it – especially on the key pillars of the economy, security and corruption – is pure fantasy.”

2. Strike: Knocks trail Wike son’s graduation from UK

Some Nigerians on social media, Monday, expressed displeasure over the graduation of the first son of the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, from a university in the United Kingdom amidst the lingering strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The PUNCH reports that academic activities in public universities in Nigeria have been shut down for close to 147 days.

ASUU had on February 14, 2022, announced the commencement of industrial action following the failure of the government to meet some lingering demands of the union.

But the first son of Nyesom Wike, who also happens to be a former Minister of State for Education under the administration of Goodluck Jonathan, graduated with a second-class upper degree in law from the University of Exeter, United Kingdom.

Commenting on the development on social media, a Facebook user, Remi Mowo, said, “Rubbing salt on injuries? They refused to develop the education sector in Nigeria and why? Their wards are schooling abroad. ASUU can be on strike forever. They do not care. Wike was also a former education minister.”

3. UK to announce new prime minister Sept 5

The new UK prime minister to replace the outgoing Boris Johnson will be announced on September 5, the ruling Conservative party said on Monday, with 11 hopefuls currently vying for the job.

The leadership contest was triggered last week when Johnson, 58, was forced to step down after a frenzy of more than 50 resignations from his government, in opposition to his scandal-hit premiership.

The influential 1922 Committee of non-ministerial Tory MPs in parliament on Monday outlined a timetable for the party’s leadership election.

Nominations will officially open and close on Tuesday, with a new prime minister set to be installed when parliament returns from the summer break on September 5, Graham Brady, chair of the 1922 Committee, told reporters.

4. Kuje Prison Break: Another terror escapee arrested with drug at Area 1 in Abuja

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have arrested one of the wanted terror suspects who escaped from the Medium Security Correctional Centre, Kuje, following an attack on the facility by insurgents last week in Abuja.

Director, Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi made this known in a statement in Abuja.

Babafemi said the fleeing terror suspect, Suleiman Sidi, was arrested in the early hours of Monday 11th July at Area 1 motorpark, in the Federal Capital Territory while attempting to board a commercial vehicle to Maiduguri, Borno state.

When he was searched, three wraps of cannabis sativa were found on him.

5. Nigeria cannot afford to make mistakes in 2023 – Sanwo-Olu

Sanwo-Olu said this at the Lagos House, at the Year 2022 Eid-ul-Adha celebration by the First Family of Lagos State, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs.

Represented by the deputy governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, he said that Nigerians must choose rightly in 2023 because it was about the country’s future.

He noted that the outcome of the 2023 general elections would greatly determine the future of Nigeria hence Nigerians could not afford to make mistakes in electing their leaders in 2023.

He stressed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential flag bearer, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the right choice for 2023 because he had built bridges across Nigeria.

6. Buhari condemns attack on Adamawa pastor

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the gunmen on Tuesday shot the Pastor, killed two of his sons and kidnapped his 13 year old daughter.

Buhari who was represented by Boss Mustapha, Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), condemned the attack when he visited the National Vice President of EYN Church, Rev. Anthony Ndamsai on Monday in Mubi.

7. Ganduje frees 90 inmates in celebration of Sallah

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has freed 90 inmates from correctional centres across the state.  With the latest release, a total of 3,898 inmates have been freed by Ganduje within the past seven years, The Nation learnt.

Ganduje, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Abba Anwar, said the decision is in compliance with President Muhammadu Buhari’s call for the decongestion of correctional centres.

The exercise (release of inmates) is conducted through the State Prerogative of Mercy Committee during the celebration of Sallah festivities, the governor said.

The statement reads: “The 90 inmates who were released today (Saturday) are among the 3,898 released during the governor’s visit to Gorondutse Correctional Centre on Sallah Day today (Saturday).

8. Nigeria faring better under Buhari – Presidency

The Presidency has described certain impressions in a section of the media that Nigeria has fared worse under President Muhammadu Buhari’s watch as misleading, detailing key achievements of the administration in various sectors.

A national daily, in its recent editorial, depicted the Buhari administration as having mismanaged the affairs of the country, leading it further deeper into failure and crises.

However, in a rebuttal, by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, on Monday, the Presidency described any insinuation the administration had made the situation worse than it met it as pure fantasy, stating that the country now fares better than it was in 2015.

According to the statement, in the three key pillars of focus for the administration, being, security, economy and the anti-corruption crusade, the Buhari administration has recorded recognisable footprints, the global crises that have marked the time lines in the last seven years notwithstanding.
