1. Days of drug, substance abuse in Nigeria numbered, says Osinbajo

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday, said the days of the scourge of illicit drug abuse and dependency in the country were numbered.

Osinbajo spoke at the 2022 United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.

Speaking on the theme, ‘Addressing Drug Challenges in Health and Humanitarian Crises’, he said the renewed vigour of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, the commitment of the Federal Government and the support of development partners makes it safe to say that the country is winning the war on drugs.

“We are winning this war. The days of the scourge of drug abuse and dependency are clearly numbered, but it will involve even greater investment in focus and determination for the long haul.

2. Firm plans industry dialogue to boost business integrity

The Center for International Private Enterprise says its first-ever edition of the Africa Business Integrity Network & Recognition slated to hold tomorrow, June 28, 2022, will draw conversations toward promoting business integrity in Africa.

According to a statement by the Enterprise, the event themed “Advancing Business Integrity in Africa through the Africa Business Integrity Network” will be open to virtual and physical attendance at the Wheat Baker, Ikoyi Lagos, Nigeria on a registration-only basis.

The statement read in part, “Over the last two decades, legal and regulatory interventions to curb corruption increased globally in response to the pervasive spread of corruption. Anti-bribery and corruption requirements began to cascade through global value chains, along with a global convergence on recognised standards of business integrity and collective action to reduce corruption.
This created new challenges for emerging market economies in attracting foreign direct investment.

“To reverse this trend, ABIN was created in 2017 to empower businesses in the region to implement sound corruption mitigation systems that meet internationally recognised standards and are both appropriate for their experiences and adequate for their needs.”

3. PDP worried over Obasanjo’s ‘mistake’ comment on Atiku

The main opposition Peoples Democratic Party on Monday expressed concern over former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s comment that he made mistake when he picked his Vice President in 1999.

The former President had on Saturday said he made a mistake in the choice of his number two ahead of the 1999 presidential election.

Obasanjo became democratically elected President in 1999 while the current presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, was his Vice President.

The former President, who did not mention Atiku in his statement, said it was a mistake he made in good faith but was saved by God.

4. Atiku as your VP is a blessing to Nigeria, support group tells Obasanjo

A political support group for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate for the 2023 elections was a blessing to the country when he was the Vice President to former President Olusegun Obasanjo between 1999 and 2007.

In a statement signed by the national publicity secretary of Atiku Support Organisation (ASO), Dr. Victor Moses and made available to newsmen , the group described Atiku as “the best vice president Nigeria has ever had since 1960 independence.”

The group was reacting to a statement by former President Obasanjo, on Saturday, who said he made a mistake in the choice of his presidential running mate ahead of the 1999 presidential election.

The statement reads: “The choice of Atiku Abubakar as Vice President in 1999 was a blessing to Nigeria – Atiku Support Organisation replies Chief Obasanjo

5. Uzodimma Political Adviser resigns alleges lack of inclusive government

The Imo state governor, Hope Uzodimma’s Special Adviser on Political Matters, Batos Nwadike, on Monday resigned from his position alleging that the government of Uzodimma, was not running inclusive governance.

Nwadike made this known to newsmen in Owerri, in his letter of resignation addressed to the governor.

He also alleged that since he was appointed by Uzodimma, he had spent N77 million personal money and demanded that the government should refund him.

According to Nwadike, “I am proud of the accomplishments of my office in the last 2 (two) years and 6 (six) months, during which time I dedicated all my talents and energy to the success of your administration.

6. How three siblings drowned in Lagos pool ― Relative

A relative of the family whose three children drowned in a pool in the Ajah area of Lagos has clarified that disaster struck in the estate pool and not the parents’ home pool.

The relative, who simply gave his name as Manuel, further clarified that the parents of the children of ages 14, 7 and 3, were not at home when tragedy struck.

Manuel explained that the children had gone swimming in the estate pool, unaccompanied by an adult penultimate Sunday when they drowned. Some residents who had gone swimming in the pool raised the alarm when they saw two of the children afloat.

Manuel said, “ They alerted other residents. By the time they jumped into the pool, they discovered there were three children. Unfortunately, they were confirmed dead by the time they were rushed to the hospital.

7. NIPCO pays N610m dividends to shareholders

Shareholders of NIPCO Plc have approved the payment of N609.9 million as cash dividends for the 2021 business year.

At the 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the company held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja, shareholders approved the payment of a dividend per share of N3.25, totaling N609.9 million. The approved dividend per share represented an increase of 25 kobo over the payout for the previous year.

Chairman, NIPCO Plc, Chief Bestman Anekwe said the dividend increase showed the commitment of the company to growing the investment of shareholders.

He said the exemplary performance of the management team and the workforce was responsible for turning in higher bottom-line for the company.

8. Industrial & Medical Gases’ shareholders get 20% bonus shares

Shareholders of Industrial & Medical Gases Nigeria (IMG) Plc at the weekend approved the distribution of bonus shares as scrip dividends for the 2021 business year.

At the annual general meeting in Lagos, shareholders approved 20 per cent increase in the shareholdings of shareholders on the register of the company as at June 9, 2022. Shareholders will receive a bonus share for every five shares held as at the qualification date.

The scrip dividend will see distribution of about 83.25 million ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to all shareholders, increasing the company’s paid up share capital from 416.24 million ordinary shares of 50 kobo each to about 499.5 million ordinary shares of 50 kobo each.

9. Osun 2022: INEC, CSOs partner to sensitize electorate on invalid votes

Ahead of the gubernatorial election in Osun State, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and Civil Society Organisations met to foster peace and boost inclusive election at the grassroots.

The objective was also to have a peaceful election, to have an inclusive governorship election and reduce, if not eliminated, invalid votes.

Speaking at the programme in Osogbo on Monday tagged: ‘One-Day Discourse By INEC/CSO For Peaceful Osun Governorship Election’, Ndidi Okafor who is the Deputy Director of CSO/INEC said the gathering is tilted towards a peaceful election.

“But we should educate them so they can make very clear amidst choices. we want to reduce invalid votes.”

The commission said it wants to see increased participation of eligible citizens.

10. Terrorists own guns, Nigerians should carry too – Yoruba council backs Zamfara govt

The council of the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland has hailed the decision of the Zamfara State Government to approve gun licenses.

The government gave the approval to enable individuals to carry a firearm for defence against terrorists.

There have been countless attacks in Zamfara in recent years, with hundreds killed, kidnapped or wounded.

In a statement on Monday, the Gbonka Aare-Onakakanfo, Gboyega Adejumo urged South-West governors to take a cue from Zamfara.

The Yoruba chiefs warned them to stop tolerating the activities of terrorists “masquerading as bandits and kidnappers, killing innocent people at will”.

They noted that Zamfara Governor, Bello Matawalle has “literally opened the eyes of other governors across the country”.
