1. UI, UNN, UNILAG shine in global varsity ranking

The University of Ibadan, the University of Nigeria, the University of Lagos and the Ahmadu Bello University have been ranked among the best universities in the world according to the Centre for World University Rankings, The PUNCH reports.

A total of 20,531 universities were ranked with 2,000 making the global list according to the list published on the website of the global organisation on Monday.

The University of Ibadan was ranked first in Nigeria and 1,163th position in the global 2,000.

UNN was ranked second in Nigeria and 1,784th position on the global list.

2. Driver escapes death as container crushes car in Lagos

An articulated truck conveying a 40ft container on Monday fell on a Toyota car along the Cement bus stop inward Dopemu area of Lagos State.

It was gathered that the incident happened at about 4 pm on Monday.

There was, however, no casualty as no one was in the car when the accident happened.

3. INEC, EFCC, others to discuss corruption in 2023 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have been listed among other panelists to discuss corruption in Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

The panel is put together by The Conversation Africa which has over the last two years been hosting science policy dialogues that bring scientists and policymakers together to discuss issues.

According to a statement made available to newsmen, other panelists include the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre, Hamzat Lawal of Code4Africa, Dr Damilola Agbalajobi, and Prof Emmanuel Aiyede.

The panel is expected to address questions on the role of corruption in the just concluded general election and also note the gains and the challenges recorded.

4. NBA urges incoming govt to prioritise reforms to restore nation

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has challenged the incoming administration of Sen. Bola Tinubu to introduce necessary reforms that would bring about a new Nigeria as well as restore the country’s lost glory.

The President of the association, Mr Yakubu Maikyau, SAN, made the call on Monday in Abuja when he led members of the association’s Annual General Conference Planning Committee (AGCPC) to unveil the logo and theme of the 63rd Annual General Conference of the association.

Maikyau said that the theme for the 2023 conference is : Getting it Right: Charting the Course for Nigeria’s Nation Building and added that Nigeria, blessed with immense natural and human resources could continue to be deficient  in terms of development.

He said that it was the responsibility of lawyers to provide direction and leadership in the country for it to recover its lost glory.

5. Nigeria not harnessing maritime potential – NAMN

Capt. Tajudeen Alao, President, Nigerian Association of Master Mariners (NAMM) on Monday urged the Federal Government to harness the potential in the maritime industry to boost the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country.

Alao made the appeal in Lagos during the presentation of Honorary Fellowship Award to Capt. Pier Carrodano, former Group Managing Director of Comet Shipping; and Fellowship Award to Commodore Duja Effedua (Rtd), Rector, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.

According to Alao, maritime can contribute a lot to the country’s gross domestic product apart from oil.

“From Lake Chad up to Badagry, to Ogoja, Bakasi inland waters. We have the coastal waters about 600 miles, and the no-exculsive zones, then the international waters.

6. Jonathan lauds Umahi for immortalising him with mega-bridge project

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has thanked Gov. David Umahi of Ebonyi for immortalising him while alive with a mega-bridge project in the state.

Jonathan made the appreciation on Monday while inaugurating the 29-span Iyere bridge in Afikpo South Local Government Area (LGA) named after him.

The former president, who performed the inauguration in the company of his wife, said that his entire family would be eternally grateful to Umahi for the gesture.

“Children yet unborn will know that there is one Goodluck Jonathan.
