1. Soludo condemns kidnapping of Anambra lawmaker, expresses worry over attacks

The Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has condemned the abduction of a member representing the Aguata Constituency II at the State House of Assembly, Okechukwu Okoye.

The governor also condemned the kidnapping of Okoye’s Campaign Director, Cyril Chiegboka.

Both men were kidnapped on Sunday while returning from a function.

The governor, therefore, called for their immediate release.

2. Blogger arrested over report on Ogun gov, lawyer slams Abiodun

The Department of State Services has reportedly arrested a blogger, Ahmed Olamilekan, for allegedly publishing a story on Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun.

The report was said to be on Abiodun’s alleged criminal records in the United States.

Olamilekan’s lawyer, Festus Ogun, said his client had been in detention since Friday after he honoured an invitation by the Ogun State command of the secret police.

He accused the governor of instigating his client’s arrest, adding that Abiodun had the right to challenge the publication in court instead of using the DSS to harass the reporter.

3. Lagos prophet arraigned over missing NOUN undergraduate

A Lagos prophet, Ejiro Ologonla, has been arraigned before Justice O.H. Oshodi of the Ikeja High Court, Lagos State, over the alleged kidnap of an undergraduate of the National Open University of Nigeria, Anthony Olatunfe, 29, who went missing in December 2019.

PUNCH Metro had earlier reported that the student lived with the Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Administration, Michael Ojomo, in the Victoria Island area of the state.

Ojomo had telephoned the missing student’s father, Augustine Ojomo on December 12, 2019, to ask if he knew the whereabouts of his son, who had yet to return from an errand.

The matter was reported at the Bar Beach Police Station as police operatives went into investigation and called the student’s phone number, which was answered by Ologonla, who claimed to have picked the phone at the bar beach.

4. Police parade suspected killers of Abuja female corps member

The Nigeria Police, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command on Monday, paraded three suspects in connection with the murder of a female member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC), Stephenie Terungwa.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, CP Sunday Babaji, while addressing newsmen, said the Maitama Division had on April 15, received information about the body of a middle-aged lady lying on the road.

Babaji said that crime scene investigators (CSI) were swiftly drafted to the scene upon the receipt of the information and removed the body to the hospital where she was confirmed dead by a doctor on duty.

He said the initial effort to facially profile the victim proved abortive due to her deformed face suspected to have resulted from exposure to a corrosive substance.

5. Address insecurity, poverty, ethno-religious violence, Arewa group tells Northern leaders

A group, Arewa Transformational Leaders, has called on the governments in the North, to do more in addressing the urgent challenges of insecurity, poverty and ethno-religious violence in the region.

The organisation also urged Northerners to embrace peaceful coexistence and mutual respect for each others religions.

The ATL also told Northerners to maintain good rapport with other citizens from the South with a view to enhancing national cohesion and integration.

These were contained in a communique issued to journalists Interim Secretary of the ATL, Amb. Dr. Simon Dolly after a crucial meeting of the group in Abuja, weekend.

6. EFCC arrests Accountant-General of Federation over alleged N80bn fraud

EFCC operatives have arrested the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr Ahmed Idris, over alleged diversion and laundering of N80 billion.

Mr Wilson Uwujaren, Head of Media and Public Information at the EFCC made the declaration on Monday in Abuja.

He stated that verified intelligence reports showed that Idris raked off the funds through bogus consultancies and other illegal activities using proxies, family members and close associates.

7. INEC gives APC, PDP, others deadlines

Ahead of primaries, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has given deadlines to political parties on nomination and withdrawal of candidates

The electoral commission also foreclosed the adjustment of election timetable.

In line with its guidelines, INEC has directed the parties to submit lists of delegates for elective offices to it, seven days to the date of the primary.

Both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) submitted designated centres for their national conventions to INEC yesterday.

APC opted for the Eagle Square while the PDP chose the Velodrome at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

8. ASUU strike: Students protest in Ondo, Oyo, Ogun

Travellers on the Sagamu-Benin and  Akure-Ilesa expressways had a hectic time getting to their destinations as students blocked the ever busy roads in Ogun and Ondo states in protest against the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Motorists and commuters in Ibadan, Oyo State also had a taste of hardship caused by students who caused gridlocks on major roads in the city.

In  Edo State, hundreds of protesting students of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), turned the entrance of the  Federal Secretariat in   Aduwawa, Benin into a cooking arena, thereby making it difficult for workers to gain access to their offices.

9. Nigeria gets £600,000 UK grant for 20 institutions, organisations

The British Council has announced the sum of £600,000 UK-Nigeria grant funded partnerships earmarked to support systemic change between 20 institutions and organisations.

The Chief Executive of British Council Scott McDonald stated this Tuesday in Abuja during the presentation of an overview of Transnational Education in Nigeria by the National Universities Council (NUC).

He said the commitment of the British Council to a long term investment in the Nigeria education sector as well as its continued growth, maintained that the relationship between UK and Nigeria was very important, not forgetting the key role of the British Council to that effect.

McDonald, while speaking during the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Transnational Education (TNE) between the British Council and the NUC noted that the partnership was aimed at opening up more opportunities for young Nigerians willing to study in the United Kingdom both virtually and physically.

10. 2022 UTME: Why withheld results have not been released – JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board JAMB on Monday explained why some withheld results have not been released.

Recall that the exam body on Saturday released the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME results.

Candidates were informed to check their result by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 using the same phone number that he/she had used for registration.

Head, Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin, in a statement on Saturday had said the result would be returned as a text message.

Speaking on Monday, JAMB’s Head of Public Affairs and Protocol, Fabian Benjamin cited malpractice, misconduct, breach of procedural processes, and incomplete review of the centre as some of the reasons results will not be released.
