1. 1.9 million passports issued in 18 months –FG

The Federal Government has said no fewer than N1.9 million passports have been issued to Nigerians between January 2021 and June 2022.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, said a total of 1.3 million were issued in 2021 with no fewer 650,000 booklets have been collected by Nigerians as of June 2022.

Aregbesola who spoke at the commissioning of the Enhanced Passport Production Centre in Port Harcourt,  on Tuesday stated that there is no longer shortage of booklets in the country.

In a statement by his Media Adviser Sola Fasure, Aregbesola said enough booklets had been distributed across the various centres nationwide.

The statement partly read, “We have left no stone unturned in our quest to make passports available to Nigerians. Last year alone, we provided 1.3 million passports to Nigerians. As of today, there is no booklet shortage in Nigeria.

“As of the second quarter of this year (in June), the NIS has provided 645,000 passports out of the 750,000 applications received. To address the challenge of the backlog, we have sent 11,000 booklets to Ikoyi, 11,000 to Alausa and 8,000 to FESTAC centres in Lagos.

2. Nigeria will remain one – Buhari

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Tuesday, said his regime was determined to keep the country together.

Reminiscing the gory civil war from 1967 – 1970, the President said the price had been paid to ensure Nigeria’s unity. Therefore, political leaders must uphold the ultimate objective of promoting the interest of the country.

According to a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari said this when he received former State Chairmen of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change at the State House, Abuja.

The statement was titled, ‘We are Nigerians, God willing we will remain Nigerians, and Nigeria will remain one, says President Buhari.’

The President said the self-centeredness that led to the loss of about a million lives between 1967-1970 must not be allowed to repeat itself, noting that the CPC was founded on the bedrock of patriotism and loyalty to the unity of Nigeria.

He said, “Our main objective is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are human beings. We have our weaknesses, but I can assure you that the patriotism in us is hard-earned. We have gone through all the troubles from 15th of January 1966 to date. You know what I mean by this, we have killed a million of ourselves in order to keep this country together.

3. EFCC arrests 18 suspected Internet fraudsters in Kogi

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, have arrested 18 suspected ‘Yahoo-Yahoo Boys’ operating in Lokoja, Kogi State.

The arrest was effected by operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command Office of the commission when they busted the hideouts of the suspected internet fraudsters in Lokoja.

According to a statement by the Media Unit of the Command, it was the second of such operations in the state within the last two months.

The operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Command, which covers Kwara, Ekiti and Kogi states, had recently in June 2022 arrested 19 suspected fraudsters at different locations in Lokoja.

The latest arrest, which was made on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, followed actionable intelligence and hours of surveillance by the anti-graft operatives to smoke the suspected fraudsters out of their hideouts.

4. INEC denies recognising Lawan, Akpabio for senatorial elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied alleged   doctoring of  documents to accommodate Sen. Ahmed Lawan and Godswill Akpabio to run for Yobe North and Akwa Ibom North West senatorial districts respectively in  2023.

The commission gave the denial in a statement by its National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye in Abuja on Tuesday.

Okoye said that not for the first time, INEC’s  attention had been drawn to a story published by an online medium that the commission had doctored, backdated and certified documents to accommodate the nominations of Lawan and Akpabio, from Yobe and Akwa-Ibom respectively

5. Alleged electoral fraud: Defense counsel withdraws from Professor Uduk’s trial

THE ongoing trial of Professor Ignatius Uduk of University of Uyo, UNIUYO, at Akwa Ibom State High Court, Uyo, over alleged electoral fraud, took a fresh twist yesterday, following an application by the defense counsel, Abasiodiong Ekpenyong to withdraw his legal services from the case.

The professor of Physical and Health Education (UNIUYO), is facing charges bordering on announcing and publishing of fake election results and perjury, preferred against him by the Independent National Electoral Commissíon (INEC).

The case was slated for Tuesday, August 9, 2022, for Professor Uduk to open his defense, after previous dates the court fixed for him to do so suffered several adjournments, due to excuses from him (Uduk).

6. Gumi laments injustice, poverty as 2023 general elections near

A popular controversial Islamic scholar, Ahmad Gumi, has lamented that there is no social justice in the country, adding that there was breakdown of power at all levels of government.

The cleric berated Nigerian politicians for flying personal jets while the majority of the population remain poor.

Gumi revealed this in the state of the nation broadcast as published by Channels TV on Tuesday.

The Islamic cleric said: “We have made available for whoever has any ambition or interest in our country ready ‘soldiers’ he can conscript.

9. Fire guts EKEDC Lagos Island station

Fire on Tuesday gutted Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) injection substation in Idumagbo, Lagos Island.

Godwin Idemudia, General Manager, Corporate Communications EKEDC in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, said electricity supply to customers in Idumagbo and Ajele areas have been affected as a result of the fire outbreak.

He said the incident happened at 3pm when one of the 15MVA power transformers inside the substation caught fire.

Part of the statement read: “This is to inform our dear customers in Lagos Island that a 15MVA power transformer at our New Idumagbo Injection Substation caught fire at 3pm on Tuesday.

10. Trump search: FBI, Justice Department abusing power – Rudy Giuliani

American politician, Rudy Giuliani, has condemned the search of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion.

The former New York City mayor accused the FBI and Department of Justice leadership of abusing their “awesome power”.

“The FBI and DOJ leadership has abused the awesome power of law enforcement as if the U.S. has no constitution and is a fascist police state”, Giuliani tweeted.

The 78-year-old further accused the officials of a “cover-up” of supposed crimes linked to President Joe Biden.

“Biden administration first in history to pursue predecessor and his supporters criminally”, Giuliani added.

The former Trump’s personal lawyer suggested the federal government was witch-hunting the ex-leader.
