1. Shekarau not disciplined politician – NNPP chieftain

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in Ondo State, Chief Oladipo Quadri, said the defection of a former governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, from the party would not have any effect on the party, adding that he (Shekarau) was not a disciplined politician.

Shekarau exited from the NNPP to the Peoples Democratic Party in Kano on Monday, urging his supporters to work for the PDP’s victory in the 2023 general election.

Speaking on the development on Tuesday, the NNPP chieftain said the defection of the former Kano Governor spoke volume of the kind of politician he (Shekarau) was.

Quadri, who is the candidate of the party for the Federal House of Representatives in Owo/Ose Federal Constituency of the state, said the defection by politicians showed lack of political discipline and not good for the country’s democracy.

He said, “In Nigeria today, there is no discipline on the part of many of our politicians. They jump from one party to another. More worrisome is the calibre of some politicians who suppose to be role models to the up and coming ones.

2. FG acquires eight gunboats to fight oil theft

The Federal Government has acquired eight gunboats to combat crude oil theft in the country.

This was as it directed security operatives to clamp down on vandals and oil thieves sabotaging the nation’s economy.

The Minister of Interior,  Rauf Aregbesola stated these while inaugurating the gunboats acquired for use by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Tuesday.

A statement by the Minister’s  Media Adviser, Sola Fasure, also quoted him as directing the NSCDC to collaborate with other security agencies to end the scourge.

The statement partly read, “Those who steal crude oil not only deny the country of the much needed revenue, they sell the stolen goods at discounted prices, well below the market value. This black market creates a glut and forces down the official price. They have therefore made Nigeria suffer the double jeopardy of loss in revenue and drop in value of the product.

3. Ex-Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev is dead

The last leader of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, is dead.

Russian news agencies reported on Tuesday that he died in Moscow at the age of 91 years.

“Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a serious and long illness,” the Central Clinical Hospital in Moscow said, quoted by the Interfax, TASS and RIA Novosti news agencies.

4. Buhari pledges to support over 500,000 flood victims

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has pledged to support over 500, 000 Nigerians that are victims of flood disasters.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Sgehu disclosed this via a statement in Abuja on Tuesday.

The statement said that President Buhari receivies regular updates on the flood situation in the country, which has affected over 500,000 Nigerians since January this year.

Extending heartfelt condolences to all the families affected by the recent flooding in different States across the country, the President ‘pledges that the Federal government will continue to provide the needed emergency assistance to individuals and communities impacted by the disaster.

5. Birth Registration: Lagos leads with 94%, FCT follows – Report

Lagos state has topped the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory Abuja on the number of children registered at birth with the Civil Authorities with a total of 94 per cent, according to the just released Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, MICS, 2021 by the National Bureau of Statistics in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF.

Followed closely is the FCT, Abuja with 87 per cent while the lowest levels of birth registration are in Jigawa with 23.6 per cent and Sokoto with 22.5 per cent.

Birth registration is the continuous, permanent, compulsory and universal recording of the occurrence and characteristics of births, as provided by regulation by legal requirements. It is also the first step towards recognising a child’s inalienable right as a human being,

6. I never used ‘quacks’ for state universities, says ASUU President

The president Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke has said he never said state universities are quacks.

The ASUU president said this while speaking on Politics Today, Channels TV on Tuesday.

He said, “What I said was very clear. The person on the seat asked me a question that your members in three universities have abandoned you and I gave them that LASU, we have a problem with them and because the universities sacked all the leaders of ASUU in the branch.

“That’s why they are not on strike; that in KWASU they are not even our members yet and they are not meeting the standard and that in Osun they were punished for breaking our strike and they are all part of the problem.

7. Southwest APC women leaders strategise for Tinubu’s victory

The All Progressives Congress (APC) women leaders in the six states of the Southwest geo-political zone have thrown their full weight behind the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The women pledged their support for the flag bearer during a maiden meeting with other party leaders in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. They said Tinubu’s emergence as the party’s flag bearer in next year’s presidential election is the best for the party and Nigerians in general.

The Southwest Zonal Women Leader, Yetunde Adesanya said the purpose of the gathering was to brainstorm on how to mobilise women, either professionals or politicians, to secure their confidence and convince them to vote for Asiwaju Tinubu during the election.

8. DisCos: Nigeria requires 100,000Mw

Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) have said the country, with 210million population, will require 100,000 megawatts (Mw) of electricity to keep the engine of the economy running.

Acting under the aegis of Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), the power companies urged the Federal Government to privatise the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which it said has contributed to the poor performance of the sector.

Its Executive Director, Research and Advocacy, Sunday Oduntan, estimated that Nigeria requires 30,000Mw of electricity generation to meet current demand of electricity by consumers.

9. 2022 floods kill 115 Nigerians, affect over 500,000 others

The heavy floods since the start of the year have claimed the lives of 115 Nigerians.

More than 73,370 people have been displaced and 277 injured, the presidency confirmed on Tuesday.

A statement said President Muhammadu Buhari is receiving regular updates on the situation which has affected over 500,000 Nigerians.

His spokesman Garba Shehu promised that the federal government will continue to provide assistance to individuals and communities hit by the disaster.

Buhari was quoted urging public-spirited individuals and organisations to support thousands of people in need of urgent help.

10. Katsina Govt buys 10 armoured vehicles to boost war against bandits

In the bid to end the menace of bandits in Katsina State, the state governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has purchased 10 additional armoured vehicles worth over a N100 million to assist security operatives in the state.

“With the recent acquisition, the state now has at least 30 armoured vehicles to fight the diehard bandits in the state,” Masari said.

The governor, while presenting the armoured vehicles to security chiefs in the state on Tuesday at the State Government House, reiterated the commitment of his administration to end banditry in the state.

Masari noted that further efforts in conjunction with the Inspector General of Police and some local producers are underway to produce more armoury for security agents in the state.
