1. FG records $1bn investment in automotive sector

The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo, said that the Federal Government has recorded more than one billion dollars’ worth of investments in the automotive industry.

Adebayo said this when he featured at the 20th edition of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.)’s administration scorecard series organsied by the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture on Tuesday in Abuja.

“Over one billion dollars in investment has been recorded in the automotive sector and we are ready to move on to the next phase for the automotive industry,” the minister said.

While disclosing that the review of the National Automotive Industry Development Plan was nearly completed, he said that the plan was going through validation process

2. Senate gives Pantami’s ministry ultimatum over N13.9bn fund

The Senate, on Tuesday, gave the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy a 48-hour ultimatum to account for the N13.9 billion it collected from service-wide votes from 2017 to 2021.

The ultimatum given by the Senate committee on Public Accounts to the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, William Alo, followed his failure to tender documentary evidence on how the N13.9 billion was expended by the ministry during the period under review.

Trouble came the way of the ministry when the chairman of the committee, Mathew Urhoghide (PDP Edo South), and other members quizzed the communication ministry’s permanent secretary on details of expenditure made from the collected service-wide votes.

The permanent secretary, along with the director of finance and administration from the ministry, incurred the wrath of the panel for begging for more time for the documentary evidence.

3. Maternal mortality ‘unacceptably high’ in Nigeria – Experts

Family planning experts have said that maternal mortality remains “unacceptably high” despite the safe motherhood strategies in Nigeria.

The experts, however, said there was a need to increase the uptake of family planning services in the country to reduce maternal deaths.

According to them, Nigeria’s modern contraceptive prevalence rate, which is at 12 per cent, requires concerted efforts to be increased to 27 per cent in line with the Nigeria Family Planning 2030 agenda.

The experts who spoke on Tuesday at the Launch of Community-Oriented DMPA-SC/Self Injection Acceleration in Nigeria and Self-Care Accelerator Projects and Dissemination of the Resilient Accelerated Scale-up of DMPA-SC Self-Injection in Nigeria, said increased uptake in family planning services would help to achieve a low death rate and ensure a quality of life.

4. Buhari appoints Segun Awolowo Secretary, AfCFTA National Action Committee

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Mr Olusegun Awolowo as Secretary, National Action Committee on the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) for a tenure of four years.

Mr Femi Adesina, the President’s spokesman, who confirmed this in a statement kn Tuesday in Abuja, said the appointment took effect from Dec. 19, 2022.

According to Adesina, as secretary, Awolowo is expected to provide direction to the national action committee on the AfCFTA for effective coordination of relevant stakeholders toward the attainment of Nigeria’s strategic national interest.

Awolowo, a Law graduate from Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), Ago Iwoye, has served as Special Assistant to former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

5. Tinubu supporters defy closure of stadium by security agents, as Sen Sabi leads rally in Borgu Kingdom

CRISIS  rocking the Niger State Chapter of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC deepened yesterday as Security Operatives blocked the New Bussa Township Stadium, Borgu local government area of the state, venue for a grand lockdown rally for the APC Presidential and governorship candidates including their running mates slated to hold at New- Bussa Township Stadium.

The Police, Soldiers, men of the Federal Road Safety Corps,  Civil Defence Corps and the local  Vigilante were yesterday deployed to the New Bussa Stadium venue of the planned rally as early 7 am in the morning for an event slated to hold from 11 am to 2 pm.

The Army came in two loaded pick- up Van’s while the Policemen were dispatched from the State Headquarters to join their colleagues in New Bussa to ensure that no one was allowed into the already arranged venue with chairs and tables.

Journalists, invited guests and Supporters who came for the rally were turned back by the police operatives citing order from above.

6. DPO, 2 Policemen, five women, children killed in fresh herders attacks on Benue communities

The Divisional Police Officers, DPO, in charge of Gwer West Local Government Area, LGA, of Benue State, Mr Mamud Abubakar, two police personnel, two children and three women have been reportedly killed in separate attacks on Benue communities by suspected armed herdsmen.

It was gathered from a source in Naka, the Gwer West Headquarters, who spoke on condition of anonymity that the murdered DPO and the two other police personnel were ambushed and killed Tuesday afternoon on Makurdi-Naka road shortly after alerting the military personnel on a checkpoint on the road of the presence of a large number of armed herdsmen on the axis and their intension to attack the communities in Gwer West.

According to the source, “after alerting the military personnel of the presence of a large number of armed herdsmen on that stretch of road, the military personnel were mobilising to move into the area while the DPO who was accompanied by two other policemen moved ahead slowly.

7. Ex-PDP chair Haliru Mohammed suffers paralysis

A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Bello Halilu Mohammed has suffered paralysis and can no longer walk, his lawyer, Duncan David Oluohu has said.

Oluohu made the disclosure on Tuesday at the resumption of hearing in the alleged N300m fraud case brought against him, his late son, Bello Abba Mohammed and a firm, Bam Projects and Property Ltd by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC had in January 2016 arraigned the three for allegedly receiving N300million from the Office of the National Security Adviser former (ONSA), under retired Col. Sambo Dasuki, for PDP’s 2015 campaigns.

At the mention of the case on Tuesday, Akeem Bakare, who announced appearance for the second defendant (Bam Projects and Property Ltd) told the court that, although the case was scheduled for continuation of trial, the first defendant has died.

8. Rivers voters will punish PDP national leadership- Wike

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has said that voters in Rivers will punish the national leadership in the forthcoming Presidential election for abandoning the State during the 2022 floods.

Wike spoke on Tuesday at the Community Secondary School in Akinima Town during the Rivers State PDP Campaign inauguration at Ahoada West Local Government Area.

The Governor explained that the flood devastated  some communities of Abua/ Odual, Ahoada West and Ahoada East Local Government Areas submerging houses, displacing people and disrupting their socioeconomic lives.
