1. Sign copyright bill, NGO urges Buhari

The Electronic Information For Libraries, on Monday, asked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to sign the 2022 Copyright Bill into law.

The Bill, which was passed by the National Assembly on July 22, 2022, overhauls and modernises Nigeria’s copyright system. It supports the use of works in the digital environment to help foster a creative, tech-friendly ecosystem, and introduces new exceptions for libraries, education and people with disabilities.

The organisation notes that new Bill will enable libraries and other cultural heritage institutions in Nigeria to preserve Nigerian creative expression for future generations. In particular, it will spur efforts to safeguard Nigerian cultural heritage against threats posed by climate change, such as more fires and flooding, and other disasters.

2. ‘Withdraw policemen attached to VIPs to INEC facilities’

The Federal Government has been advised to start withdrawing some security officials attached to Very Important Persons across the country and deploy them to provide maximum security for the officials and facilities of the Independent National Electoral Commission at the forthcoming general elections.

The leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church of Nigeria, Prophet Adegboyega Alao, made this known on Monday during a press briefing heralding the church’s annual general conference.

The cleric noted that this was necessary following the recent attack on INEC offices in some parts of the country.

3. IGP unveils Mabushi divisional headquarters in Abuja 

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, who was on Tuesday represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 7, Kayode Egbetokun, unveiled the newly-built division police headquarters, Mabushi in the Federal Capital Territory.

The edifice was donated by Stallion Property and Development Company Limited as part of its cooperate social responsibility to the community.

The AIG in his opening remarks thanked the SPDC and described its gesture as commendable and highly worthy of emulation by all and sundry.

4. Okowa, Sanwo-Olu, Marwa, Ooni others for Newspeak awards 

Four state governors, United Bank for Africa, Access Bank and Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd) will be honoured by Newspeak Media for their achievements and contributions to Nigeria’s development.

The governors are Dr Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu(Ondo); Engr. Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu-Olu (Lagos).

Akeredolu will receive the Courage in Leadership award, Makinde honoured for his sustained workers-friendly policies, Okowa is recipient of the Most Youth-friendly Governor award, while Sanwo-Olu is the Most Responsive Governor.

5. Delta state has never failed me since 1999 – Atiku 

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, said Delta State has never failed him in all his political career, from 1999 to date.

Atiku stated this while addressing supporters on the PDP campaign trail in Asaba, the Delta State capital on Tuesday.

He said, “[We are here] because of the support we have received and have received all along, particularly myself. In all my political career, from 1999 to date, Delta State has never failed me.”

Meanwhile, Atiku has said his choice of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa as running mate was due to longstanding support from the state.

6. Old Naira Notes: Senate asks CBN to extend deadline to May 31

The Senate yesterday asked the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN to extend the deadline for the exchange of old naira notes from the January 31 deadline to May 31, 2023.

The Senate has also urged the CBN to open an exchange window where people that don’t have bank accounts to deposit their old notes.

The resolution of the Senate was a sequel to a motion by Senator Sadiq Umar, APC, Kwara North who demanded an extension to July 31, just as he was worried by the insistence of the apex bank that there would be no such extension.

7. CBN opens cash swap points in Ondo, forces banks to land ATMs 

Towards ensuring that residents in Ondo State have access to the newly redesigned naira notes before the expiry date, senior officials of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday stormed Akure to compel commercial banks to load their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) with the newly redesigned notes.

Director, Legal Services and Legal Adviser of CBN, Mr. Kofo Salam-Alada, who led other officials of the bank, said the move was to ensure Nigerians do not lose their money due to inability to access the newly redesigned naira notes before the January 31, 2023 deadline.

The CBN Officials went out in groups to different locations across the state to inspect and ascertain that all commercial banks complied with the directive on dispensing the new redesigned Naira notes.

At many ATMs visited were temporarily out of service.

8. UPDATED: CBN refuses to extend deadline for old naira notes 

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has foreclosed the possibility of extending or shifting the deadline on the deposit of the old naira notes.

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele apologised to Nigerians for not extending the deadline but stated that 100 days from when the announcement was made to the expiration date was enough for Nigerians to deposit their old notes.

Emefiele said: “We don’t see any reason to talk about a shift because people could not deposit their old monies to their banks”.

Regarding the circulation of new notes, the CBN Governor assured “the new currencies will be made available. We hold about three meetings every week with the banks”.

9. FRSC warns parties, politicians over reckless driving during campaign 

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned parties and politicians to avoid excessive speed and reckless driving.

The Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu on Tuesday, told drivers of convoys to handle vehicles with caution.

Biu’s warning followed multiple auto crashes, some fatal, involving party members and supporters.

10. Kwara: Gov Abdulrazaq signs 2023 budget 

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, on Tuesday signed the 2023 budget into law.

The budget has a capital component of N94,855,769,496.00, representing 50.2percent and recurrent expenditure of N77,626,089,869.00 representing 49.8percent, according to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, in Ilorin.

He said the fiscal document provides funding for completion of some ongoing projects and continuation of many of the administration’s impactful programmes.
