Good morning! Here is today’s summary from Major Newspapers in Nigeria

Punch Newspaper

1. Aregbesola orders NCS to improve on intelligence

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, has directed the Nigerian Correctional Service to improve its efforts in intelligence gathering.

He said such information gathered must be acted upon, describing it as the panacea to solving the problem of incessant Custodial Centre attacks.

According to a statement by the Media Adviser to the minister, Sola Fasure, the minister spoke during a visit to the Maximum and Medium Security Custodial Centres in Kirikiri, Apapa, Lagos State on Tuesday.

Aregbesola was also quoted to have boasted that no jailbreak attempt by inmates had succeeded.

2. Okowa: PDP North-East treasurer dumps party

The North-East Zonal Treasurer of the Peoples Democratic Party, Galadima Abba-Itas, has resigned his position and membership of the party.

He said his decision was in response to the “unfair and unjust treatment” done to a former presidential aspirant of the party and Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, during and after the primary of the party.

He said that the eventual choice of Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the running mate to the presidential candidate of the PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, which contradicted his political principles and ideologies, further consolidated his decision to resign from the opposition party.

These were contained in a letter he signed dated July 12, 2022, and addressed to the Ward Chairman of the PDP of Itas Ward, in the Itas Gadau Local Government Area of Bauchi State, titled: ‘Letter of Resignation as Member and Zonal Treasurer, North-East,’ and obtained by our correspondent on Tuesday.

3. Troops kill suspected killers of Bauchi village head

The Defence Headquarters has said troops of Operation Safe Haven eliminated killers of Bauchi village head identified as Alhaji Saleh Abdulhamid.

The military high command said the troops had arrested the duo of  Abdulrazaq Umar and Idris Abdullahi who confessed to have been involved in several abductions in Plateau and Bauchi States as well as the murder of the village head, adding that the suspects tried to escape and were killed.

4. Buhari in Daura, shares emotional moment with classmates

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, had an emotional reunion with his primary and secondary school classmates coming to pay homage to him to mark the Sallah celebrations.

The President enquired about each individual’s wellbeing, their health and wellbeing of their family members.

A Statement by the President’s spokesman, Malam Garba Shehu, said president and his classmates prayed for the repose of those that died between last year, when they last met and this year.

Buhari expressed his joy and happiness for the meeting, saying he got the same feeling that he used to have when they were young.

5. Funke Akindele: Jandor’s choice underscores unseriousness of Lagos PDP, says APC

The All Progressives Congress, APC, have described the choice of Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele as the running mate of Dr Olajide Adediran of the PDP as a display of unseriousness on the part of the leading opposition party.

This position was contained in a statement made available to Vanguard hours after the unveiling of Akindele.

Seye Oladejo, Lagos State APC Spokesman, describes the choice as an attempt to trivialize the importance of the forthcoming gubernatorial elections

The statement reads: “This development underscores the unseriousness of Lagos state PDP. This amounts to trivializing the importance of the forthcoming gubernatorial elections by giving political neophytes who have absolutely nothing to bring to the table their electoral tickets.

“It also shows lack of depth in the party as regards quality members to put forward for elections if they could give a member who crossed-carpeted a few days before their primaries the governorship ticket and now went to the make-believe industry to fetch a deputy. The reason for voters’ apathy is, undoubtedly, due to lack of credible alternatives by the moribund opposition party.

6. Peter Obi’s presidency won’t stop Biafra agitation – MASSOB

The Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has lambasted Muslim cleric, Sheikh Mohammed Gunmi, describing his statement on the alleged tone down of Biafra agitation after Mr. Peter Obi’s emergence as the Presidential candidate of Labour Party as hypocritical.

MASSOB said that Gumi’s statement against pro Biafra agitation is deceiving and full of falsehood.

The group stated that MASSOB and other pro Biafra agitators have been in the self-determination struggle for Biafra actualization and restoration, and have never clamoured for an Igbo man to be Nigeria president.

“Our agenda is known, our mission is stated, our position is unshakable and uncompromised and our goal is to actualize an independent state of Biafra through the principals of non violence. We can never be cowed or intimidated by the Chief patron and negotiator of Fulani terrorist movement ravaging the entire Northern region and rest of Nigeria in pursuit of president Muhammadu Buhari’s agenda of islamising Nigeria,” said MASSOB Leader, Comrade Uchenna Madu.

The National Population Commission (NPC) has foiled an attempt to hack its recruitment portal for the 2023 census.

Ezeoke said that the NPC had established a digitalised online geo-fenced portal to recruit personnel from selected communities across Nigeria.

The official assured that the commission was committed to correcting anomalies to ensure an accurate and reliable census next year.

“If hackers were not able to succeed in this, we want to ensure and assure that it will be difficult for them to hack during the 2023 census.

“I’m almost certain that the attempt, to a large extent, was foiled.

“When you are trying out something new, people will try to bypass your efforts”, NAN quoted him saying.

Joachim Ulasi, NPC State Director refuted alleged substitution of recruited officers, saying the ones dropped were those absent during the 12-day training.
