1. Family petitions IGP over son’s killing in Imo

The Amaechi family of Umueze Ndiukwu in Atta community in the Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State has petitioned the Inspector-General of Police over the killing of their son, Onyekachi Augustine, at a burial ceremony.

The petition, written by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Louis Alozie, on behalf of the father of the victim, Augustine Amaechi, which was obtained by our correspondent in Owerri on Tuesday, alleged that the victim was killed on July 15.

The petition read, “Our client complains that on July 15, 2022, the chief bodyguard to one Eze Geoffrey Anika of Atta autonomous community, Celestine Iwuagwu, a.k.a Selense, armed with a pump action, along with five others so armed and at a burial ceremony, surrounded our client’s son namely, Onyekachi Augustine, and killed him on the spot.

“One other kinsman also shot at by these gang of terrorists namely, Anyaehie Dike, received serious injuries and is now in hospital being treated.

2. Gunmen abduct Alao-Akala’s farm supervisor, demand N100m ransom

The supervisor of a farm belonging to the late former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State, Christopher Bakare, has been abducted by some gun-wielding kidnappers.

Bakare was reportedly abducted around 7pm on Saturday by hoodlums suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The farm supervisor, who is an indigene of Gbongan in Ayedaade Local Government Area of Osun State, was said to have been kidnapped on the farm named TDB farms located at Jabata community in Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.

A source close to the farm told journalists on Tuesday that the kidnappers had since contacted the family and demanded that N100m ransom be paid to secure the release of their captive.

3. $3.5M fraud: EFCC extradites suspect to US

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said it had successfully extradited a fraud suspect, Fatade Olamilekan, to the United States over an alleged $3.5 million fraud.

According to a statement on the commission’s Facebook page, the suspect, who had been on the wanted list of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was extradited on Thursday, July 14, 2022, for allegedly stealing equipment worth $3.5 million from various cities across the US.

The statement, titled, “$3.5M Fraud: EFCC Extradites FBI Wanted Internet Fraud Suspect to US,” read, “A wire fraud suspect, Fatade Olamilekan, on the wanted list of the FBI, was on Thursday, July 14, 2022, extradited to the US for allegedly stealing over $3.5 million worth of equipment in various cities across the US.

“His extradition was coordinated by the EFCC following a notice from the FBI, New York, through the US Legal Attache for his role in impersonating various cities, state and academic institutions across the United States.

“Fatade was indicted by a grand jury in the southern district of New York for offences of wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen property and identity theft.

4. IGP Alkali commends UN for training personnel on IEDs Disposal in North East

The Inspector- General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali has commended the United Nations Mine Action Service, UNMAS for training 24 Police officers at the Borno State Command on proper usage of Explosive Ordinance Disposal- Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN), as well as donation of requisite equipment to perform effectively.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Commissioner of Police EOD-CBRN, CP Zannah Shettima during UNMAS Award of Certificate and Handing Over of Explosive Ordinance Disposal Equipment which took place at the Borno State Police Command Conference Hall, Maiduguri.

He said, the gesture could not come at a better time than now, considering the number of unexploded Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs planted by terrorists in the region, which have claimed many lives, especially farmers, motorists and innocent civilians in the cause of doing their daily activities.

He said the partnership that exist between Nigerian Police and UNMAS has led to recent achievements to include; safe detection and detonation of unexploded IEDs planted by insurgents in Mallam Fatori in Abadam, Dalori Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs Camp in Maiduguri, Maiduguri -Jakana- Auno- Damaturu, and Maiduguri- Damboa- Biu federal roads among other volatile areas, which allowed millions of IDPs returned back to their liberated communities.

5. Communal clashes: Hamzat calls for creation of boundary c’ttee in Lagos

The Deputy Governor made the call on Tuesday, in Alausa, Ikeja while receiving a delegation from the National Boundary Commission who was on advocacy visit to Lagos State.

Hamzat who stressed the importance of the National Boundary Commission said, creating such committees at the Local Government levels would aid easy identification of boundaries and go a long way in attending to communal issues before it degenerates into crisis.

According to him, “There is no need for communal clashes if all states and Local Government areas in the country know their boundaries and this could only be achieved with the kind assistance and support of the commission.”

He stressed the need for a functional pillar emplacement on interstate boundaries by the commission.

6. Extend voting rights to prison inmates, NCoS charges INEC

The Nigerian Correctional Service NCoS has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to extend voting rights to inmates in its custodial centres in order to exercise their civic responsibilities as citizens.

Controller General of Corrections, Haliru Nababa made the request when he led his management team on a courtesy visit to the Commission Tuesday in Abuja.

Represented by ACG Daniel Odharo, the CGC asked the INEC Chairman to kindly consider the request as soon as practicable.

Responding, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu said the commission is committed to inclusivity including the rights of immates to vote during elections as it is being done in some parts of Africa.

He said, “Something like that is happening in our continent. Two countries, Kenya and South Africa, have extended that right”.

7. We will consider 100 per cent pay rise proposal – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it is open to considering the 100 percent pay rise being proposed by the Federal Government.

The union however said the government was yet to reach out on the new pay offer.

A former President of ASUU, Dr Nasir Fagge, stated this during a briefing jointly addressed by ASUU President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke at its National Headquarters in Abuja.

The Nation had reported exclusively plans by the Federal government to increase the pay of university teachers by 100 percent following the alleged 180 proposals suggested by the Nimi Briggs Committee renegotiating the 2009 agreements with university unions.

Fagge said the union was waiting for the government to give approval to the Briggs committee to sign the draft agreement reached with ASUU.

He said: “We have negotiated with a duly mandated committee that is appointed by government and we have reached draft agreement.

8. Aviation fuel hits N892 per litre

The challenges facing local airline operators worsened yesterday as aviation fuel price surged above N800 per litre.

In Lagos a litre went for  N822;  Abuja, N859; Port Harcourt, Rivers State N852; Yola, Adamawa State, N890 and Maiduguri, Borno State N892.

The product sold for between  N580 and N600 per litre last month.

An industry player hinted to The Nation that the development might result in higher cost of tickets; delayed flights or outright cancellations.

The operator said “ This ( aviation price hike) will indeed affect our operations. The airlines cannot handle this cost on their own. This is just fuel, we’ve not talked of salaries and maintenance of the aircraft.

“If we get the product tomorrow, we will operate as scheduled but it is not that easy as someone has to pay for it. Therefore, they may be delayed fights or even outright cancellations.”

9. Peter Obi a good manager of men, resources – Soludo

Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has sent a goodwill message to Peter Obi.

The presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP) clocked 61 today.

Soludo hailed Obi for his management of people and resources.

The governor said this was evident during Obi’s two-term tenure as Anambra chief executive.

“Obi is a good manager of men and resources who gave his best in service to Anambra during his time in office”, he noted.

Soludo encouraged Obi to devote the remaining part of his life to service to humanity.

The ex-Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor prayed God to give the celebrant more rewarding years.

10. CBN increases benchmark interest rate to 14%

The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday increased the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) to 14 per cent from its initial 13 per cent.

The Governor, Godwin Emefiele said the MPC unanimously agreed to hold all other monetary policy parameters constant.

The Asymmetric Corridor was retained at +100 and -700 basis points around the MPR, the Cash Reserved Ratio (CRR) at 27.5 per cent and the Liquidity Ratio at 30 per cent.

Emefiele explained that the parameters were retained to contend the rising trend of inflation in Nigeria.

The MPC considered the continued aggressive movement in inflation even after the rate hike at its last meeting.
