1. Insecurity: Ondo Rep donates motorcycles to Amotekun

A member of the Federal House of Representatives, Mr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has donated 20 motorcycles to the Ondo State Security Network Agency, also known as Amotekun, as part of his contribution to help the state tackle insecurity.

The federal lawmaker representing the Akoko North-East/North-West Federal Constituency of the state said he was committed to joining hands with the state government to end insecurity in the state.

The Chairman, House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, donated the motorcycles on Tuesday through Mrs. Yinka Tunji-Ojo in Oke Agbe town, the headquarters of the Akoko North-West Local Government Area of the state.

According to him, the move was also to  complement the efforts of the state government in boosting the security architecture of the state.

He said, “We will not rest until we create a structure which can effectively and proactively combat the nefarious activities of criminals across the 18 local government areas of the state”

Tunji-Ojo, who had earlier donated four vehicles to the officials of the Nigeria Police Force, said he would continue to do more to ensure the safety of his constituents and neighbouring communities.

2. New CAN President emerges Thursday

A new President of the Christian Association of Nigeria would be announced on July 28, 2022, according to information obtained by The PUNCH in Abuja on Tuesday.

The organisation said this in the schedule of activities and timetable for its Year 2022 General Assembly and leadership transition programme, signed b the Special Assistant (Media and Communication) to the outgoing CAN President, Rev. Samson Ayokunle.

According to Oladeji, the new President of CAN will emerge on July 28 at the end of the General Assembly where his nomination is expected to be ratified.

Contrary to stories making the rounds on social media, the religious body, however, did not provide any details about the candidate for the highest office in CAN.

3. Chrisland: Broadcaster re-arraigned for posting s3x video online

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday re-arraigned an on-air personality, Uche Igwe, popularly known as Darksam, before Chief Magistrate Adeola Adedayo of the Yaba Magistrate Court in Lagos for allegedly sharing the sex video of a Chrisland School pupil.

Earlier in May 2022, the Nigeria Police Force arraigned the 40-year-old staff of Lagos-based radio station, Metro FM, on a two-count of cyberstalking and breach of peace.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Chief Magistrate Adedayo admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N10 million with three sureties in like sum.

4. Nigeria will lose N400bn, 20m jobs if FG bans okada, mining

An economic working group, Nigeria Economic Security Agenda, NESA, has warned that Nigeria will lose N400billon and 20 million jobs, should the Federal Government goes ahead with it’s plan to commercial motorcycle commonly called okada and mining activities in the country.

NESA Convener, Mr. Ikenna Emewu, who addressed newsmen in Lagos, yesterday,  while reacting  to an announcement last Thursday by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, on the proposed ban, said: “Whereas we align with the government on the need to secure this country for the good of all of us, we, however, disagree with the proposed procedure which we believe would not serve the intended purpose for the reasons we have articulated below:

“These sectors embody very important economic activities which are prime to the stability of the country. No doubt, socio-economic security, and safety are the core of stability and it is only economic security that guarantees national security. In Nigeria, like in any other country, societies with higher unemployment have higher crime rates.”

5. Property owner tackles LASG over demolition of building

A property owner, Chief Adetunji Omisore and one Tajudeen Mohammed, are at logger heads with the Lagos State Government over the demolition and sealing of their property situated at No. 4, Ladoke Akintola Street, GRA Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, July 19, 2022.

In a statement made available to Vanguard by the above-named owners, the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LSBCA, served the owner and developer of the said property a 7-day demolition notice on Friday, July 15, 2022.

On Monday, July 18, the developer approached the General Manager of LSBCA, Gbolahan Oki, for clarification on the action, presenting the fact that the property in question is under the authorisation and jurisdiction of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The owners’ efforts to prove to the agency that they have the approved documents on the said land fell on deaf ears as the owner was kicked out of the office of the general manager and ordered to send the documents through official channel the following day.

6. Pass Digital Right and Freedom Bill, PIN tells National Assembly

Paradigm Initiative, PIN, a social enterprise that builds ICT-enabled support systems has called on the national assembly to pass the Digital Right and Freedom Bill to guarantee the rights of Nigerian citizens in the digital age and to promote trust.

The call was made during the press conference organized by PIN to engage stakeholders in the technology world and media representatives on the need for the federal government to engage in a broader consultation to achieve an inclusive, democratic and rights-respecting approach to content and platform regulations.

This consultation according to PIN must be at a level-playing field for all concerned stakeholders including the private sector, government, human rights organization and digital rights organizations.

The digital rights advocacy program is focused on the development of public policy for internet freedom in Africa, with offices in Abuja, Nigeria (covering the Anglophone West Africa region); Yaoundé, Cameroon (Central Africa); Nairobi, Kenya (East Africa), Lusaka, Zambia (Southern Africa), Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and Dakar, Senegal.

7. We don’t have secrets accounts – NPA

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has dismissed report that it operates two secret foreign accounts, saying it only operates two two USD-denominated domiciliary accounts approved by the Federal Government.

It said its management runs transparent operations and gives premium to due process in the execution of its core mandates.

A statement by its General Manager, Corporate and Strategic Communications, Nasiru Ibrahim, reads: “The attention of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has been drawn to a media report , suggesting that the Authority operates two secret accounts outside Nigeria, which have been allegedly looted.

8. Bill for poverty alleviation commission scales 2nd reading in Senate

A bill to establish National Poverty Alleviation Management Commission on Tuesday passed second reading at the Senate.

This was sequel to the presentation of the lead debate on the bill by the sponsor, Sen. Kabir Barkiya (APC-Katsina) during plenary.

The bill is entitled “A Bill for an act to establish National Poverty Alleviation Management Commission”.

Leading the debate on the general principles of the bill, Barkiya said that it was first read on Jan.19.

He said that the bill when passed would have tremendous impact on the reduction of poverty level in Nigeria.

9. NSCDC gives one-month ultimatum to private guards in Jigawa

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, has issued a one-day ultimatum to private guard companies to ensure strict compliance with the laid down rules and regulations as enshrined in the PGC Act.

The Jigawa State NSCDC Commandant, Musa Alhaji Mala (CC), gave the warning during a meeting with the state Chairman, the Association of Private Guards Companies.

He said this is in a bid to reinvigorate the private guard companies and ensure strict compliance for effective service delivery.

“You have to ensure strict compliance with the laid down rules and regulations as enshrined in the PGC act which include registration of companies, revalidation of expired licenses, prompt payment of employee allowances, use of approved uniforms, display of identification cards, training and retraining of personnel, operating offices within the State, among others,” the commandant stated.

“Your significance in the provision of security in the State and the nation at large especially in area of intelligence gathering and sharing cannot be over emphasized.”

10. Police arrest woman who absconded with three-day-old baby in Ibadan

Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday said that a woman who absconded with a three-day-old baby in Ibadan, the state capital, has been arrested.

The police said that the suspect, Itunu Adepoju, who lives in Lagos, absconded with a three-day-old baby girl from her mother last week.

The mother of the baby is Monsurat Lateef, who lives in the Itamerin area, Ogbere, Ona Ara Local Government Area in Ibadan.

Public Relations Officer of the command, Adewale Osifeso in a statement issued on Tuesday, confirmed the arrest of the suspect.

He said that investigation is ongoing.

He added that the matter would be charged to court upon completion of the investigation.
